"The Nines" is one of those unique pizza-beer places where you find the clientele as varied as the selection of beer and pizza on the menus. Situated on College Ave in "Collegetown", just 3 blocks from Cornell University in Ithaca NY, The Nines is one of those places where you can stop in on your way to a Cornell b-ball or hockey game or even on your way home to enjoy great pizza and beer. The atmosphere is very laid back where shorts and t-shirts are as welcome as khakis and polos. One of their trademarks is how the kitchen is on the second floor, above the bar and dining room and the food is dropped down to the servers on a dumbwaiter behind the bar! The pizza options are deep-dish or round thin crust - both are excellent. The beer selection is above typical, but not quite equal to that of a focused brew pub, but still there is a beer for most tastes available, but may leave the beer-snobs feeling a bit shafted. Service - well it is a college establishment and most servers are here this year and gone next, so expect ok service, keeping in mind that its a pizza and beer place, not the Ritz Carlton... its all about expectations. But I have to add that there are some 10+ year staff that are there to oversee and make sure you will return again. Stop in here for a laid-back fun and tasty time and you will leave feeling like that was a pretty damned cool place. The Nines got its name from the former Ithaca Fire House #9 that used to reside there. The firehouse is now a modern city fire department located next door to The Nines Restaurant. ~Jim

contrary to the above, this is not the best deep dish pizza. It is not that bad but it is not really deep dish at all, rather more like an overloaded thick crust. being from Illinois I found it amusing. perhaps yall new yorkers should stick to what you know which isnt this. If youve had real deep dish, consider yourself warned. the sausage on the pizza was a little too breakfast-y, like somebody cooked up a roll of Jimmy Dean, crumbled it into chunks ranging from overcooked particles to chunks as big as your eyeballs, and threw it on top, certainly not a quality Italian sausage, and certainly not the well-balanced bite-size chunks thatd you hope for in each bite. also, the cardboard box in which it was delivered was a soggy crumpled mess; if youre going to make a heavy pizza at least spend the extra nickel to ship it properly so that it is presentable upon delivery (since it is a $20 pizza). This was for delivery only. I have not visited the restaurant in College-town, which may be a terrific place to dine, get wasted, and/or see live music, but none of that is here nor there if you had an itch for deep dish that wasnt scratched.

Sadly, I will probably not ever go to The Nines again or ever recommend it to anyone. Although I like the atmosphere and the pizza, all the many other comments here about the abysmal quality of service at this restaurant are not an exaggeration. We came in for a lunch during a weekday, and we were pretty much the only ones ordering. Although our waiter brought out our pitcher of beer quickly, the service went steadily downhill after that. It literally took an hour for us to get our pizza. Our waiter forgot to put in the order for our salad, and it came out 20 minutes after our pizza did. It also took us at least 15 minutes just to get a pitcher of water for the children. My honest impression is that the people working there on that day must have been smoking something. There was definitely a high level of mental impairment going on, like "Oh, you want some water on a hot day for your kids. Ill see if I can remember to do that at some point. In the mean time Im going to wander around aimlessly while you watch and wonder WTF I am doing."

Never before have I been motivated enough to leave a review on a restaurant. I would give this place 0 stars if I could. They messed up our order which is fine, no big deal, we will live. Then we never get our appetizer until we ask the waitress. She apologizes and brings it to us but then she leaves the napkin on top of the garlic bread which has cheese on it. What?? Why in the world would you do that? The napkin melts into the cheese and is now inedible. To top it off our water cups remained empty with no offer of refills. At this point we talked to the manager who told us there is nothing he could do at this point. This confused us as to whether he wouldnt help us or he was mentally incapable of helping us. Overall worst dining experience of my life and the pizza was almost average at best.

By far the worst experience Ive had at a restaurant! Called ahead and was confirmed seats, reached in under 2 minutes and turns out seats were filled. They were charging a $5 cover and I wouldve paid with card but only took cash, so I asked to be pointed to the nearest best food joint open late, the gentleman I talked for the seats came and asked the bouncer to seat me without the cover....bouncer said yes.....I sat....chose what I wanted...and waited.....waited....waited....waited some more....finally the bouncer came and asked if I had been served, I said nope and THE BOUNCER took my order.....THE BOUNCER brought me my drink...and than I noticed the bouncer was doing it all, I swear, hes the only reason Im giving this place 2 stars...Probably never going to be back...

The deep dish here is unique and worth the wait, but the round pizza is somewhat below average by Ithaca standards. They had some issues with cooks a couple years back, but it has gotten more consistant in the last year or so. The main thing is do not go on a Fri or Sat night at 7pm and expect a pizza in less than an hour. They often have tables of 30 or more and if you come in at the wrong time you can have a VERY long wait. Good place for bands and one of the few places with good food, fair prices on beer and a good band scene. 30-45 minutes is a normal wait during the busy hours, more if they are dealing with large tables. If you see a table of 20 or more, come back another time. They have a pretty big menu and many options besides pizza.

We ordered a deep dish pizza with 4 toppings. He got one of the toppings wrong on our order which was fine, we didnt really care. I think the pizza was not nearly "deep dish" enough compared to other deep dish pizzas Ive had. It just seemed like there was extra dough. The pizza was still really good though, the best Ive had in a long time. Otherwise, the acoustics here are not so good. Despite going on a Wednesday evening and the restaurant being only half full, the noise level was strangely high. I had trouble hearing my friend who was just across the table from me.

Thirty minutes for the waiter to take our order. Then he went to have a smoke and talk with a buddy for a while. Half an hour later, he came back and assured us that it was on its way. Probably he actually put the order in at this point once we reminded him of what it was. Twenty minutes after that, appetizers were served. Twenty minutes after that, pizza (an hour and forty minutes in!) Some of us even got napkins and forks! Not everyone though. Twenty more minutes to bring the check. Good pizza. Worst service Ive had in town.
