One of the new marketing strategies for bars in the South Slope is building their den of alcohol-infused iniquity is to generate some hype by announcing the bar will be opening, let it sit dormant for a few months while you work out all the legal haranguing required to open a bar in New York, let locals walk by dejected because this awesome-looking bar isnt open, and then surprisingly open just when were sure it will never happen. Its gold, Jerry. Such is the case for the Black Horse Pub, who used this effective marketing strategy to entice customers for the last few months, slowly building a buzz that resulted in packed houses the first few nights after it opened last week. The first thing youll notice is how big the space is -- the way the light works, it doesnt look nearly as big from the outside as it does once youre in the doors. There are great seats next to the windows that extend almost a quarter of the way down the block and then wrap around onto 16th St., giving it that 1994 coffee house feel that everyone so loved in Singles. Plus, the ceilings are really high, meaning you never feel claustrophobic, even when the bar is crowded. There are a few tables right in front of the entrance, with a row of two and four tops down the left side of the space. The bar occupies the right side of the area and has hooks under it for hanging your coat or purse, though they could probably use a few more. Considering we were there on opening weekend, and during the day when it was less crowded, I felt it ok for me to start making recommendations and asking for my favorite additions, including a foot rail which the owner assured us was in the works. I need a foot rail, man ... some of us just have short legs. They have 16 beers on tap, all for $5 except for Delerium and Guinness, which are $6 each (a completely fair price if you ask me). Bar snacks are coming as soon as the kitchen opens but one of their highlights will be the full English you can get weekend mornings when youre rolling in at 8 am to watch Fulhamerica take on whatever English powerhouse theyre doing battle with this week. Its a Brit-lovers dream. The rest of the bar is sparsely decorated, as you might imagine, with a majority of the artwork dedicated to their favorite bands -- Massive Attack, the Clash, the Smiths ... well, you get the idea. And while youre likely to get sound for the morning and afternoon footie matches, its going to be music at night (which, the night I was there, was a bit of an odd mix of upbeat dance music -- not bad but not what I was expecting). Just an excellent, friendly place which is as close as Ive found to a local since I moved out here. I reserve the right to up this to five stars once the menu comes out.

I wanted to withhold judgment on Black Horse until I visited several times. Now that I have, I think four stars is a fair rating (rather than the three that seem appropriate at first glance) for a few reasons... Rotating beer list includes local breweries - I was a little upset that the first times I went there was nothing from Brooklyn Brewery or Six Point. Now there is, and life is better. While I would not recommend this place to beer aficionados, they do a pretty good job at getting some good beer in there. Food - My biggest problem is that I dont really like the chips. Theyre sort of bland and usually underdone. However the bangers and mash are decent. And Ive also noticed that the food (as well as the vibe) is pretty authentic to England. You dont go into a pub in England and expect great food, you expect sort of greasy pub food, which is what they have here. Also worth noting, the owners are very cool and look out for their patrons. The music is good, and it is deceptively large. Even when the place gets kind of crowded, it doesnt feel uncomfortable.

A great sports bar. They open early for whatever international match is being played. And yes, youll find folks drinking and watching at any hour. The food is surprisingly great here. Beer selection is what youd imagine for a large sports bar and youll always find something good. It can get very crowded so service can crawl from time to time but theyve got a great sidewalk eating area where dogs can enjoy a beer with their owners. (Did I say that backwards?)

A cold beer and a cool young crowd is par for the course on 5th Ave in Park Slope & Black Horse Pub serves it up perfectly. A small outdoor seating area for the summer, tall shotgun windows letting in lots of light and breeze are just a few of the amenities that make me appreciate this chill drink spot. Its unassuming on teh outside and even more laid back inside. Enjoy a beer or six, the bartenders are easy on the eyes ...

Pretty typical english style pub. They have a large selection of beer and usually have a cider on tap, which is great for people like me who dont drink beer. The bartenders are quick and friendly. They have many sports games on the TVs almost all of the time. The good thing is that they focus more on soccer than anything else. Ive never had food here, but the people Ive seen eating seem to really enjoy their meals.

My British hubby and I wanted to go to an authentic British pub for a traditional Sunday roast dinner. We live in Brooklyn and didnt want to go all the way into the city. As soon as walked through the door, owners Brian and Josephine welcomed us. We felt like we were regulars within the first 10 minutes! If you are looking for a cozy, fun pub - Black Horse pub is for you. The food is fantastic.

Love this place! This is a sports bar/restaurant but more specifically a soccer bar. For big soccer games I suggest coming early if you want a seat. One of the only bars I see that have Estrella (Barcelona beer) on tap. The nachos and burgers are good. I love the Fish tacos. Its my regular order. The staff is super friendly and attentive and if youre a regular theyll treat you exceptional.

Cool place. They have a nice selection of German beers, and the have in and outdoor seating. I think that in terms of food they can do better, but it doesnt change the fact that the place is simply cool and with very nice bartender and people who run the place. It can get very crowded during the summer weekends, and for sure too crowded to seat outside, but very nice inside.

Ordered a burger rare and it came out so overlooked it like disintegrated in my plate. The bartender was not attentive. Took a few minutes to get her attention each time I wanted to order a drink. Music selection was good and there are a lot of TVs... If I lived in top of it I would come back, but I live a few blocks away so I never will.

Only been a couple of times (Thursday nights, outside of football season) with friends, but Ive had a good time whenever I was there. The establishment is clean, not too much noise to hold a conversation, and the staff has always been good to us. Definitely going back - might even become our monthly spot.
