I think Demetri would prefer to be described as simply a European pub or restaurant than the trendy "gastropub" label used here. But the definition of a gastropub is a bar that a bar that serves a more high-end selection of drinks and food than the old "bar menu" and that is certainly true here. I usually start off with the fried calamari with marinara, orange remoulade. Calamari is one of my tests for a restaurant because when its poorly done, it is obvious. De Novos is excellent and I was told that the chef soaks the squid all day in buttermilk to soften it. The salads and flatbreads are very good. My wifes test for an Italian restaurant is to try their gnocchi. She measures it against her own and her nonnas that she grew up eating. She gives the potato gnocchi here high marks. I am a real pasta fan and I have ordered and enjoyed here the pappardelle (with pulled short rib ragout), my beloved fettuccine (pork sausage, fennel cream), bucatini and the strozzapreti (with garlic oil, shrimp, mushrooms, sun dried tomatoes, mustard greens, & parmigiano), They open most days at noon and have a different lunch menu and the place fills quickly. The bar has a good selection of beers, wines and all the cocktails you could need and it is also busy, including during the gap when the kitchen is closed between lunch and dinner some days.

Hard to rate this place, but I dont see how the overall rating is so good. I can see liking this place if you go with people who know the menu. About half the items the party of 4 I went with got were good. The other half were not so good... at all. The service was sllllllow and there were a bunch of drunk regulars (Im presuming, as they were allowed to do this without anybody saying anything to them) jumping around from table to table being sort of obnoxious. Started off with a cocktail that had grapefruit in it... it was fake grapefruit, which makes for a terrible drink, its a pet peeve for me. That combined with the 50/50 on the food and the below average service = meh for me.

An attractive bar and restaurant built in an old train station in Upper Montclair. They have a good selection of beers on tap as well as a a good wine list, with many wines by the glass. Their menu features a range of selections from pastas to fish to steak. We went with a group of around 12 people and everyone was pleased with what they ordered.

Not sure what the hype is about. The salads we ordered were both overdressed, oddly perfumed with vanilla and cloyingly sweet. Tuna tartare was straight out of 2002 (deconstructed? Get with it, guys). Service was friendly, but kitchen pacing was slow, even post dinner rush on a weeknight. We got a good look at the place, knowing we wont be back.

The place was promising and service was pretty good. However, the portions were too big, too much meat with the ragú pasta, and "ice cream" on the dessert tasted like frozen cream instead of ice cream. Wine quality was poor. Overall very disappointed.

Great little hidden gem in the parking lot of the the train station. Had hangar steak and cheese tortellini. Must get the tuna appetizer and blue cheese stuffed olives - if you are into either of those things. Ambiance is cute, and lively.

I was not impressed. Tuna tar tar was very good. Salad was average. Cod had no flavor and tasted under cooked. Gelato had too many ice crystals. Pasta was good.
