My girlfriend and I have been Toro many times & the sashimi has always been of a very high quality. Recently we ordered a sashimi for 2 dinner, which was oddly not on the menu but the owner gladly accommodated us. Was simply phenomenal and very affordable @ $50 for the dinner. Excellent array of fish & very nicely presented. However, the next time I went & ordered the same thing (about 2 weeks later), this time with my nephew, something weird happened in the way we got charged. When ordering we got asked whether we wanted the chef to pick & choose whatever kind of fish we wanted no matter how exotic. Being very adventurous w/sashimi in general we agreed. When we got the platter however, it had less pieces of sashimi than the 1st time I had ordered it. But if the quality is there, I dont mind less quantity. However, when we got the check, instead of being charged $50 for the dinner, every piece of sashimi was charged a la carte! So, we were staring down the barrel of a $142.00 bill. I mentioned this to the owner and she apologized for any misunderstanding and explained how the "special sashimi" we ordered was not to be charged at the regular rate of $50 like last time. Yet, aside from the uni (sea urchin) and toro (fatty tuna) that was on the platter, there was nothing in the realm of truly exotic fish. And really only about 20 pieces of fish total. The qty. was indeed less than when I paid $50 for two people and that variety of sashimi 2 weeks prior was more extensive than this very expensive instance. Bottom line, very good place. Just be wary when ordering sashimi for two people. Worth mentioning that the owner did give us a $20 off coupon for the next time. Wouldve preferred being told up front how I was going to be billed vs. getting that sashimi sticker shock.

So we received an menu in the mail for this place not too long ago, and decided to give it a shot to see who we liked best between Aki, Koreander, and Bamboo. After receiving the total and hanging up, I double checked what we had ordered and the total sounded slightly high, even with the tax included. So I called back, and the girl on the phone reviewed each item and the price. It turns out that one of the items was $1 more than the price we had on our menu. I questioned that, and the girl said that her boss just updated the menu a week or so earlier. So moving on, she then explained that there was also a $3 delivery fee because we are in Clifton and delivery was only free within Montclair. The menu plainly stated "free delivery within 3 miles." We live in Clifton, but we are right on the Montclair border and only 2 miles from them (and certainly a lot closer to them than a lot of houses in Montclair, who apparently get free delivery). I questioned it all with the girl on the phone (who was very sweet, but obviously not empowered to make decisions "off the script" as she kept referring to what her supervisor had trained her on - which was certainly not her fault). These two things were a real turnoff for us, because in my eyes, in the spirit of customer service, the price difference and free delivery should have been honored. The food ended up being good, but they made what I like to call a $4 mistake. For a $3 delivery fee and a $1 price difference, they lost quite a bit of future business since we have other options for good sushi and will certainly use them. Had it not been for those issues my rating would have been at least 4 stars, if not 5. Toro, you lose...

This is by far the most delicious and authentic Japanese food Ive tried yet in montclair at fair prices. The chef is Japanese and owns it with his lovely wife who make sure both the sushi and hot dishes are super high quality and delicious. I often call ahead on the train so its ready for pick up when I get home. I love the chirashi bowl, the sushi dinner, the fried tofu and the crispy calamari. But honestly Im sure everything on the menu would be equally delicious.

Weve tried them all in the area and even outside the area and all Japanese restaurants are second to Toro. They have the best rolls, the freshest sashimi, nice warm atmosphere and good service. Ask for the black snapper and if they have it youre in for a real treat. Oh dont forget to pick up a nice wine from next door to have with your dinner, they have a great selection. One of the nicest things of Toro is you dont feel rushed. You can eat, drink and relax.

Arrive at 7:00 p.m. at cozy sushi place, order an appetizer and entree. And wait. And wait, and wait...Nine-fifteen, the appetizer arrives. Nine thirty entree shows up. Explanation for the delay? "everyone order sushi tonight" by unfriendly hostess. Um, yeah. The sushi was actually great, fresh and beautiful in presentation. Sadly, the 2.5 hour delay and the seemingly confused waitstaff (oh, you wanted water in your water glasses?) wrecked the experience.

This is our go to Sushi Restaurant for our family and we typically keep seeing other folks who have the same view. Why? Quality sushi thats a good value. From their specialty rolls, to their daily specials, the food is always fresh. Amy, the hostess, make you feel welcomed the moment you walk in. Like 90 per cent of restaurants in Montclair, its BYO. And having a full service liquor store right next store, is a gift from the Food and Drinks Gods.

First off the sushi was very good. However it took them 20-30 minutes to serve us. The waiter was nice, but the service was terrible. The restaurant wasnt crazy busy either, so I didnt understand why it took them so long to get the food out. It was a nice atmosphere, which is why it disheartens me to give this place two stars. However, it shouldnt take that long for food to be ready. Not coming back sorry.

I have recently become a regular at Toros and am in love with this place. The sushi is always very fresh and the specials are often unique and always amazing. I have only had great service and Amy, the owner is usually around to suggest special menu items should you wish to try some authentic dishes. Great atmosphere - good for any occasion.

Best sushi in Montclair. Many customers are regulars. Weve been coming here for years & its always top quality. Favorite rolls are Esther, Suzi, & Nobu. The tuna dumpling is fab. Gluten free friendly! They always accomodate gluten-free and have gf soy sauce ready for us. Great service, and they deliver too.

Went here for the first time for dinner and it was great. Ordered the Chicken Katsu and the Tuna Dumpling. Server was nice and service was quick. Maybe 15-20 minutes for the entrée but the Tuna Dumpling came out in 5 or so minutes. Great atmosphere but it is a small place. Would go again

My wife and I love this place, because its quiet, we can talk, the food is very good, the liquor store next door has a good selection, and the staff is attentive, warm and friendly. The specialty sushi rolls are excellent, and my wife is in love with the tuna dumpling.
