Management changed early summer 2015, service and food are greatly improved. I first went to Shogun 27 in 1993 while working a contract job in Princeton. This restaurant was better than most SF Bay Area restaurants (which is where I live). I actually met my future wife here so I have many fond memories! Fast forward 20+ years and Im occasionally back in the area working again. Went back to Shogun 27 and was heartbroken. The food was still good but the waitstaff (one Indian dude in particular) and the manager was horrible. I thought Id never return but my alternatives in the area were mainly all you can eat sushi buffets which I hate. I went once or twice whenever I was in the area (about quarterly) and noticed a huge pickup Im service in May or June of 2015. The male manager was replaced by a very pleasant and competent woman. Ive never had a problem with my billing since she appeared. Even though I go there only once or twice a quarter she remembers my name and asks about my wife and kids by name. My usual beer arrives unbidden, I feel like she thinks of me as family. The Indian waiter was there for another month or two but disappeared sometime in the summer of 2015, good riddance IMHO. Since then my orders arrive pretty much perfectly every time, somehow they even remember to include extra wasabi and pickled ginger without me having to ask. Before, Id request it two or three times and never get it. Sometimes at lunch they seem short staffed, the manager also serves sometimes but she is extremely fast and efficient while still managing to be pleasant. I wish this restaurant was in the East Bay in San Francisco because it is my all time favorite sushi restaurant. Too bad I live on the West Coast and have to go to New Jersey to eat at my favorite sushi restaurant. on the down side, the physical plant of the restaurant is run down, not at all like I remember it from the glory days. So sad...

This place has a distinct dive-y atmosphere, inside and out. Its surely not the cleanest either. In 2009, when they got their Zagats rating, it was probably a LOT nicer. Fast forward to 2017, and I suspect not a whole lot has been changed. I Found my shoes sticking to the carpet in a lot of places which was frankly unsettling - thinking back now it reminds me of a movie theater. Its very hot in the hibachi dining area and rather hilariously they try to combat with portable AC units. Like a previous reviewer mentioned, it does look like additions were added very haphazardly or at least the lack of decor made it feel like you were walking through a somewhat dingy house with a layout that may not make the most sense. With all of that said, and because were brave, the food was not bad. Not the best hibachi - no egg in the rice, ginger dressing was definitely missing something, clear soup was meh...(but honestly Im not a fan when theres fried onions in it to begin with, here or anywhere). The proteins were very good however. Between the four of us we tried the shrimp, scallops, salmon, swordfish and steak - all great. The server was friendly and the chef was entertaining. Seating was a bit of an experience: they werent really ready to seat us, but the little lady led us around the place anyway - a little awkward. The drinks were good, at least the two varieties that were had. Oddly, the bar was brimming with people on the way out, but I suspect thats because theres really no where else for that crowd to linger in the area. Overall there are better places to go to, but if youre jonesin for some hibachi and can (definitely) turn a blind eye to the aesthetics, you probably wont be disappointed.

Not what I expected from a Hibachi grill. Ive been to 15+ different Hibachi locations throughout the United States and this is by far the worst Ive been ever been to. My family usually loves Hibachi, however the food, sauces, and restaurant is not good. First thing we noticed was the extreme heat, they have two rooms...one is air conditioned the other has floor units that are obviously not doing the job. Luckily we were able to sit in the colder room that had A/C, however had to walk through some dirty dish section to get their. They need a serious remodel. We arrived at 5:45 and had to wait until other customers showed up before our meal began, this took nearly 45 minutes. We have a large family and there was no need to wait that long to get started with our meal. We had a regular spot in our old town of Ocala, Florida and they began the meal within ten minutes no matter if other people were around or not. Next the food, no "shrimp sauce" or "steak sauce". Instead they serve a bad honey mustard and another ginger sauce that was not good. The salad was good and the soup was great. My wife is allergic to seafood and we asked them to not cook the shrimp/seafood until her meal was cooked and they agreed. I thank them for this. However why is there sesame seeds on everything? On the rice, the noodles, the chicken, the steak....SO MUCH SESAME....I thought big bird was going to come out. Its my last time going to that restaurant and I will continue to search for another Hibachi grill in the NJ area, recommendations would be appreciated.

Made the mistake of going on Karaoke Night. I have been to Shogun before and was fairly pleased. However, on this trip I was sadly disappointed. Unless you are there for the Karaoke, I would avoid this place on Wednesday Night as the festivites seem to trump the service. Had to wait 20 mins for my drink while my companions enjoyed theirs. Waitress seemed determined to avoid our table making it impossible to order. When she finally decided to take our orders, she came across aloof and completely disinterested to the point of one of my companions deciding not to order at all. After receiving warm and sub par sushi and then being insulted when I requested a refill (she felt the need to explain refills werent free as if we were expecting them to be) I went up to the host/manager requested the check the from him (because she was no where to be found) and told him I just purchased a home in the neighborhood and i will never return. So needless to say Shogun is in the rearview as there are many hibachi/sushi places in the area.

I havent ever written a google review and created an account strictly to warn people of this restaurant. I went there with a party of 12 this past weekend for a hibachi birthday party. The chef at our table started off by dropping the spatula onto the floor THREE times! I thought this was part of the joke of a hibachi routine, however the extreme unprofessionalism continued throughout the night. The portions of meat were very small and he left the rice on the grill for 30+ minutes, only to serve it to us all once we finished the rest of our food. It was a bizarre experience and I can only hope the chef was drunk or drugged on something. Honestly, I try to give people the benefit of the doubt but this place made our party feel like we were in the twilight zone. I would recommend any ohter hibachi place near by :/ Save your money folks
