Well, I was once a die hard patron of Matthews Diner & Pancake House but after my unforgettable and regrettable experience on Saturday, August 14th, 2014 at brunch time I will no longer be a patron of this establishment. I came in with a friend that I had recently introduced to this place with pride, the food was good as usual but it was the despicable treatment of the staff that has made myself, my friend and anyone else I know never return to Matthews Diner ever again. The waitress, a young woman, was curt and became visibly annoyed and anxious to not want to serve us after we requested a coffee refill, which was preceded by her rudely shoving the check at us, which we DID NOT request, this is the way most restaurants operate, the waitperson is supposed to ask you if you would like anything else, such as more coffee or desert etc., but she clearly didnt have the proper etiquette or training to do this and according to her coffee refills were a part of the service but she seemed reluctant to do this. The worst part of this deplorable scenario was the disrespectful and condescending treatment of George, who I found out was one of the owners! He came over to our table and abruptly told us that we had to leave because supposedly there was a group of other people waiting. He spoke to us in a very nasty and harsh way, it unnerved us. As we were leaving, my friend spoke with him, and he continued to be disrespectful towards her and even lying about how long we were there, he said 3 hours but it was actually only 1 and a half hours, as well as claiming that when we came in we just walked to the table and sat ourselves, another blatant lie, we walked in inquired about the available table and the host or manager pointed towards the table and told us we could sit there. Id like to think that this was just a bad day for them but I dont want to even give them this, I truly think that we may have been profiled, cant think why, perhaps being two women?? Dont know. Nevertheless, there is absolutely no excuse for their disgusting behavior and I will make a point of telling others that if you want to be treated like dirt but maybe have decent food then Matthews Diner & Pancake House is the place to go. There actually is a place like this-- Its called Hell.

The service was horrible and the good was even worst ordered two t bone steaks well done got fhem back with blood inside. Swnt them back in the kitchen and said well done, when fhey brought it back out it was burt to a crisp and dried out. Not editable at all. I was upset and wanted to complain but my boyfriend is way different he paid for both expensive ass steaks despite us not eating them and we left. They lost a true customer who use to love their food idk if management changed but they must do better. Very disappointed. P.s. my boyfriend never been here n i bragged about how good the food was such a disappointment

The food is good. I had french toast made from Challah bread and turkey sausage. This is my favorite breakfast food. The only problem is with the bathroom. It is not handicap accessable. The door to the bathroom area is too heavy and very hard to open. Once in the bathroom,which is very small, the stall is too small to get a walker in so you cant get a wheelchair into the the bathroom let alone into the stall. The sink is too high to reach so if you are in a wheelchair you cant wash your hands. I gave 3 stars because the food was good but I am disabled and if I cant get into the bathroom then it is useless to me.

Went here expecting to have a nice breakfast with my husband. We had brought our 4 month old daughter inside in her stroller so we didnt have to set her car seat on a high chair. We moved from where we were seated because we felt like we were in the way. We moved ourselves to a back booth. The older gentleman who sat us then promptly came over and yelled at us because her stoller was blocking another booth. Was completley out of line considering all that had to be done was the table be slid down to make room. Clearly not a family oriented place! Will Not be back!

Was excited to come back and eat here, as Id eaten at the diner that was in this spot many times before. Too bad for me, as our late night meal last night was pretty awful. My brothers burger dry and tasteless - his quote was "the meat tasted like it was 4 days old." My chicken parm sandwich was big but nothing to write home about. Fries were the best part of the meal. Onion rings were terrible - dry and fell apart into 20 pieces the moment you tried to eat one. Service was good though, which is certainly appreciated at 1am.

I stopped here for a quick breakfast, mid-week. The place was partially occupied and I was seated immediately. The menu is a basic diner one. I ordered Eggs Benedict but to be honest, it was something meh. The sauce was absolutely tasteless, as well as the home fries. And to be really frank, it was one of the least good Eggs Benedict I had. Other the that, the place is cozy and clean.

one of the worst service i ever received!!! Once we received our order from the waiter, he never looked back at us to help and when finally he did and we requested to have our food to go; he happily said "he will be right back" and never came back. we walked out off there(off course after paying our bill)!!!!

The service is tremendous, the people are so kind and welcoming! When youre at Matthews youre truly a part of the family. The food is not only good but also affordable. My favorite thing to order is the bacon cheeseburger deluxe! I love this diner and am a regular customer. I recommend to all :)

Great food and great service, especially from Mo, Angela and the rest of the morning and lunch staff. Been coming here for about thirteen years. I come alone with family, friends and always get great service. They always accommodate and treat us well. Oh, did I mention the food is great.

We try to make it here once a week for their breakfast, which is always perfect! I always get the French Slam. MMmmm. They also have one of the best Gyros around! Warm, friendly and a consistent staff make it a winner which is why we visit often!

The only diner Ive gone to every sunday since a baby. The food may be a little over priced. 4:25 for a cheeseburger and 1.95 for a soda, but the food is real good. The waiter/waitress always knows what i get cause i get the same every week

I love Matthews! I go there as much as I can. I love all the food but my favorite is the pancakes tall stack and a sausage and cheese omlette. Everyone that I bring there falls in love with the place. Definitely the jewel of bergenfield..

We were actually visiting NJ and NY for a long wknd. We happen to come across this spot on the late night.... which was great because we wanted a quick bite. It opens til 2am. The service was quick and the food was good.
