Fair warning, I am very critical of restaurants: While up in the area this weekend, my wife and I decided to try Gusanoz after seeing it on RI, even if she was amazed, I wasnt impressed. Let me start with the location, I will not hold it against them that the restaurant was part of a strip mall, however, the interior definitely looked like it were inside a strip mall, loud, dark, stained ceiling tiles, dust on vents, etc. We were seated quickly, near the bar, against a wall, on these TINY tables and stools (they looked like chairs at least), the stools scared me, they were quite tall, and very wobbly. Chips and salsa was placed on the table, the chips were hot and crispy, however, the salsa tasted funky (naturally I tried it twice, but couldnt get past this bitter/almost rotten taste) By the time our waiter came for us to order drinks, to me, felt like a small eternity. The waiter asked our drink orders, I naturally asked what they had (seeing there was no mention of non-alcoholic drinks on the menu) I ordered their Lemonade (fresh squeezed, delicious), then another small eternity came before our order was placed. We ordered the guacamole, knowing how good it was supposed to be, and it was, tableside prepared, again I wonder, why have these small tables, barely enough room for the waiter to prepare the guac. My wife ordered the chili relleno (which after a taste I wish I had ordered), me, the seafood burrito promising crab, lobster and shrimp sounded delicious. Our meals came with rice and beans, the rice was quite delicious, the refried beans as well, the black beans that came with my order, however a large amount, tasted like they came from a can. My burrito came filled with mostly crab, some salad canned shrimp and no trace of lobster, coated in salsa verde and some cheese ( as well as a garden full of torn cilantro leaves which was picked off) drinks were refilled for free, the lemonade was limited to one refill before charging for another, so, after the refill was downed I enjoyed the water (enjoyed is relative as it seemed as if the glass had soap residue in the water). We went on to desert, Marias limon cake (the highlight of my experience, bringing the rating from 2 stars to 3) the cake was delicious, moist, perfect. I can definitely see how this restaurant had its issues before Chef Irvine came to the rescue, but, it seems to me the owners are not keeping up on their restaurant.

Im a Texas native. I know Mexican food. Most New Englanders dont know what Mexican food should be. No shade, just a fact. That said, this place is about as good as it gets for Mexican food in the region. Its not the way Mexican food should be, but its not bad and its better than no Mexican food. The Enchiladas Verde is good for this far from the border. Order a little extra verde sauce and sour cream. It just makes it better. Ive never had a problem with service here and really dont care what a restaurants esthetic is as long as the food is good. I drive 25 miles to eat here. Seldom make a special trip, but given the choice between other Mexican food establishments, its here or 35 miles to Pedrazas in Keene. Also good, but not like home. Fair prices and a decent glass of iced tea, which can also be challenging to get in this region. I give it 4 stars because its as good as you can get around here, but back home, it wouldnt merit three.. Recently ate at one of Bostons "best" Mexican joints and this is just as good as it was. You really need Mexicans in the kitchen and the right ingredients to make it authentic. No such thing as freshly made tortillas or tortilla chips around here. For Shame. For Shame. For Shame.

Just thought I would write a review for this restaurant...........I went there last night for dinner with my husband and it was TERRIBLE. I ordered a chicken chimichunga , cut into and and mess of white stuff came out of it, must have been cheese, so I had a plate full of cheese , the whole thing just was DISGUSTING!! The only thing that was good out of the whole meal was the beverage. Cant screw that up it comes in a bottle! THe waiter was pushy and putting his hands all over the menu, trying to show me , like I couldnt read what was good on the menu.......I used to go there with my husband a few years ago before they had the Re-vamp and it was good, now this place just plain SUCKS!! I will go to Margaritas if I want Mexican food from now on, much better atmosphere and the food is 100 times better and so is the wait-staff. Take my advice and DO NOT GO THERE, unless it is for drinks they cant screw them up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chile rellenos are typically fantastic. So are burritos. But put the two together and you have Gusanoz poorly conceived and miserably executed culinary abortion. Nothing personal against the dish - all their food is bad. Using the excuse that these are family recipes used over several generations makes me wonder if there isnt a genetic defect that prevented this family from telling mom to stop cooking. Id give credit for the use of cheap ingredients if they hadnt managed to turn it into a manner of reclaiming the term "doggie bag". But listen, folks, if you cant find Mexico on a map and are curious about the flavor of donkey flesh, then this is the place for you. The only reason this is the best Mexican in the Upper Valley is because it is the only Mexican in the Upper Valley. Save your money and splash Cholula on some dog poop. At least THAT comes from a friendlier place.

Gusanoz is a sad story. They had a great burrito stand for a few years that was awesome, but their main restaurant is abysmal. Fairly well priced, but the food is garbage I went to the main restaurant for my birthday and ordered classic Mexican tacos (none of that corn shell nonsense) with pork and grilled pineapple. It was served to me in the dryest tortilla Ive ever had -- it was crumbling to dust as I ate if. One of the tacos also contained a hair -- Im pretty sure that wasnt added for flavor! To top it all off, the rice side was undercooked. These guys cant even cook rice correctly! Ive never sent a meal back. I should have done it here. Truly awful, I will never return.

Went for lunch on a beautiful summer afternoon. Restaurant is in a nondescript strip mall. Dogs were allowed on the patio. Food: Chimichanga was delicious, as was the Patron margarita that washed it down. Price: Lunch specials were very inexpensive. Atmosphere: Not the best atmosphere, but not bad. The patio is situated under a an overhang that is on an inside corner of the strip mall. Completely protected from the sun, but the view is of a parking lot. Cleanliness: Restaurant looked OK, but the bathrooms need some attention. Other: Staff was super friendly and the service was great. They were very accommodating of having a dog on the patio.

Awesome food. I got the Sizzling Molcajete and my partner got a fajita. Both of our meals were fantastic. The Molcajete is an experience. It will live on in my mind as one of the most amazing meals Ive had from a Mexican or tex-mex restaurant. It might even be the best meal Ive had in Lebanon (actually, it was). The "ambiance" is well...lacking, and not overly mexican (looks more like it was bought from the oriental trading company. That said, I did not write this review for the ambiance, I wrote it for the food, which is what I go out to eat for, and the food was amazing. Ill be going back soon.
