Went to Umami for dinner. Service was great. We were served by the New York transplant Chef Keen Zheng personally as we sat at the bar. I did feel like that is what made our experience better. Depending on who served you and what you order can make this a 5 star to a 3... So take that into consideration. The food... Appetizer Poached Slow Poached Octopus $ 8- Very flavorful Sushi pieces: Amaebi $6, Squid $4, Scallop $6, Sea urchin from Japan $11, Escolar (White tuna) $5.50, Big Eye Tuna (red tuna) $5.50, Yellowtai $5.50, House Soy Marinated Salmon $5.50, House Smoked Salmon $5.50, Albacore (Regular Pink Maguro) 4.25 This is where he excelled. The prices are a higher than back home (In Comparison, White tuna $3, Scallop $3, yellowtail 3.50, but those prices are in Canadian, and back when we owned Blufish the pieces were huge, please bear in mind the prices here listed above are for 2 pieces, so it comes out to about Blufishs one), but the quality was there. You arent just served sashimi, its formed well (In Winnipeg the trend is just to give you a lot of rice, but not here at Umami, which is how its supposed to be, the rice is just barely held together, but delicately so, that it should break apart in your mouth easily). We did not need Soy as he prepares the sushi exactly how we should eat it. The rolls: In general, not overly done with rice. The balance of rice to nori is good. Cut into 10 pieces that make eating so much easier. They are nice bite sizes. 1504 Bellevue $9 - this was a solid roll. (Not on Menu) Tiger Roll:11.95 Favorite roll of the night. It had a vinegar component. The top with jalapenos (which we love) and tomato salsa. Very refreshing. (Not on Menu) Lobster Salad Roll 11.95 Was topped with fried onions. This was probably my least favorite out of them all. The pricing for it seems good (inside is krab/polluck, but on top was the lobster I believe). However, it just didnt stand out, especially after the Tiger roll. The flavors are ok, but I feel like they could have done more/better with this one. Its still an ok roll, just more like a 6 to 7 out of 10. Overall we had a great experience especially with the sushi chef servicing our table. We were still attended to by other waitstaff and felt very well taken care of. I had mentioned it was Joshs birthday, and we received a free tempura banana dessert. That was ok, but I preferred Blufishs. At the end they took a picture with us and put it on their wall which made the experience special, plus we got a photo to take home with us as a momento. Total Bill including two sakes and a tea: $122.94 before tip.

When OWH food writer Sarah Baker Hansen took the time to highlight Chef Keen Zhengs past work (at Sushi Nakazawa, NYC), and current kitchen in Bellevue, I thought, "Ok, what?!?" THAT is a significant piece of culinary news here in NE! Ill be cliche: Chef Zhengs Umami is true to the name, and then some! Got to go on this second night open to the public - right at dinner rush - the perfect time for bad impressions...yet, not one. I order seven items right as I walk in the door, 20 minutes later Im pulling out of parking lot - get home and everything is as expected - super fresh sushi rolls, beautifully constructed - expertly prepared ingredients (Super Tempura Roll, California, Spicy Tuna, Amazing Roll, and the American Dream) - the cooked elements were perfect - one word kept coming to mind with each bite: balance. Each rolls inner and outer components were in perfect harmony - the dimensions of flavor these rolls had as I chewed them...simply amazing, satisfying in the ways food should be after a long day at work. I consider Umamis food, service, and new home here in Bellevue to be a true blessing - I will be back within a weeks time for more.

The sushi was good but our service was horrible. We dined there this evening and sat at the bar. Steve (the bartender) was our server. He didnt know a thing about the menu or the specials, when asked for unique recommendations he told us to order crab rangoon or calamari (lol), & when our sushi for 2 platter arrived he had no idea what anything on our plate was! We grabbed another worker there to explain what everything was once it arrived. We made the trek there from Omaha after we read a rave review in the paper about this place. We gave it 4 stars because the sushi presentation and taste was solid. However, we expected more from the service. Right after we ordered from Steve another couple came in and after realizing Steve would be of no help, they moved seats and another lady (maybe a manager?)came out to help them navigate the menu and tell them about all the daily specials that Steve didnt know about. Good move on their part. Long story short- if you try this place, avoid sitting at the bar with Steve as your server.

Umami Sushi and Hibachi grill in Bellevue. Absolutely my favorite restaurant in the Omaha area! Who would have guessed that sushi could be so wonderful? Had the Coconut Shrimp Roll and the Omaha Steaks Roll. I HIGHLY recommend the Omaha one. Best Ive eaten. Plenty of options. Cheap lunch menu. The friendliest service Ive ever had. The Chef was know from New York as one of the premier sushi chefs in North America. He got tired of city life and is now mesmerizing and gracing our taste buds. I can not speak highly enough. The wife and I each had their curry shrimp bowl(red or yellow with white rice and veggies ) best curry dish ive eaten;and Ive eaten a lot of curry. For dessert. Fried cheesecake! Yummy!!! The chef is at the front making the

Ive been to Umami a couple of times never had an bad experience but this time might have been my last time ever going. Me my wife and son show up a little after 4 for dinner everything was going good until the hostess started to seat us. Mind you they were every slow at this time probably about 7 tables were being occupied and the hostess proceed to seat us all the way at the back although while they were seating ppl still towards the front. So immediately I ask the the hostess if we could sit somewhere closer so she moved us 2 seats up from where she tried to seat us the first time. So we walked out after that I will not eat at a place were I feel Im being disrespected discriminated against at its 2017 not 1950 racism dont fly with me.

Great food and very well priced for its quality. This place is not a cheap all you can eat sushi restaurant. This is a restaurant that delivers the best tasting food. Recommended for date nights and to get your sushi fix if you know your flavor. Ive eaten in sushi restaurants in Guam, Hawaii, Japan, and locally in SD and NE. This place is definitely top on the list next to Sakura-bana, Sushi Japan, and Dragon cafe. If you are wondering why Blue sushi is not one of the top of my recommendations, its because Blue is definitely overpriced + small selection, for what its titled as, a sushi restaurant, but delivers great on night life style dining. Try all these places out and test your taste buds!

Chef Keen Zheng is a master sushi chef. The fish is flown in from Japan and picked up by Chef Keen himself from the airport and was unique and available based on the season. The presentation was flawless with unique touches like the addition of a tempura crisp shiso, plum wine reduction or even a sprinkling of potato chip crumbs. Every bite was more magnificent than the last. To be fair, the physical structure of the restaurant has been updated but still reminiscent of its roots. However, the staff was friendly, the food was magnificent and we cant wait for our next visit. Come in with an open mind and prepare to be amazed.
