My husband and I went to dinner here on the recommendation of a friend. The experience has left a bad taste in our mouth, literally, and figuratively in regards to Stillwater as a whole. FOOD: Our friend had recommended the goat cheese salad, which we ordered, and found average at best. There was nothing special about it. You could toss some goat cheese on arugula and have something just as good at a fraction the price. We also decided to go big and get the Salmon with Leek Risotto. This was literally the worst dish Ive had in a "good" restaurant, ever. It tasted like nothing except lukewarm salmon. The "flavors" and textures came together in an almost vomit-y way. This should never have been served. Additionally, the bread and olive oil dipping was just pretty lame. SERVICE: Mediocre. The general tone of service was uppity, which was jarring because the food and atmosphere was not at all cool enough to warrant sticking up your nose. ATMOSPHERE: Dark, so you couldnt see the plasticy chairs and flimsy tables. Seriously, I felt overdressed going here. That shouldnt happen when youre going out for a "nice" meal at restaurant in Stillwater! In conclusion, our experience was just really sad. I would have rather eaten $24 of McChickens from McDonalds than that Salmon and Leek Risotto. If youre from the Cities, there are far better restaurants here than this tourist trap.

When the two of us entered at 12:15 PM, we were told that the CHEF would not be taking tickets for 15-20 minutes, but that we could be seated and have our beverages. Only 6 tables were filled at the time, but whatever. We were out for a leisurely lunch the Friday before Christmas. An hour later, we were approached and asked if we wanted some bread to snack on, as the CHEF was not ready yet to take our order. Two servings of bread and three cups of coffee/soda later, we were told, "the CHEF will take your order now." Other tables that came in after us were getting their orders taken and food served. Like dummies, we just stared at each other and laughed hysterically, but like a bad movie, you cant just get up and leave, as we wanted to see if the food was really worth the wait, so we ordered. Another 15 minutes before our salads arrived. 30 minutes before the main course hit our tables. At one time, I asked my lunchmate if there were hidden cameras in the restaurant or if I was being, "punked." Sadly, no. Just horrible services from the CHEF. We left at 2:20 PM and are still in shock that someone can run a business that way. Oh well. My first and last visit to Marx. Not impressed.

Our neighbor, who grew up in Stillwater, recommended Marx as being her favorite restaurant. It has become ours too. The salads and the walleye tacos are great. The wait staff is the best. Here is the most important thing to know about Marx: the best items arent on the menu. The menu says "daily seafood special" but usually there are 5 entree specials each day and 4 of the 5 will be seafood. Two of their usual specials are Mahi-Mahi (my wifes favorite) and Yellow Fin Tuna (my favorite). Both differ from day to day, but are always served with an amazing combination of herbs and veggies. Weve been to Marx at least 6 times and its been great every time. Its the best seafood in the Twin Cities that I know of. In the summer immediate seating is often available in the courtyard. We prefer the courtyard because its quieter, making it easier to converse. Dont expect a river view from the courtyard, there isnt one.

I have to say that the experience was not as rewarding as a thought it was going to be. When we came in the receptionist was on leaning on the table on the phone and did not greet us, that should have been a signal to walk back out. but we a party of 3 decided to go on. This is 5pm and nobody in the place, we asked for a booth but were denied because they wanted to keep it open for a bigger group, the table seated maybe 5. the service did not give the place the star it gets from me, when we ordered water, we got the bottle, then we asked to get glasses and got ONE, so we had to ask for another glass. overall the service was bad the food was over cooked. I came into the place after reading a review and cant understand why it scores so high. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE

Our dinner took at least an hour to be served to us. The restaurant was busy but not completed full. We waited and and waited were surprised at how long before our dinner finally showed up. Our big mistake was listening to the specials and order without even questioning the price. Jumbalaya at $34.00 are you kidding me? Not bad but not worth any where near $34.00. Service is slow and food a little overpriced. Specials grossly overpriced! So make sure you ask first before assuming it is in line with everything else. There are too many good restaurants in Stillwater to choose from and I dont think Id ever go back here. I think this place relies on business from past reputation than current quality of food, value, or service.

Always fantastic food! Marx is my favorite restaurant - FAVORITE. Our friends from out of town also have fallen in love, so we bring a large group there every time theyre in town. Cant go wrong with anything on the menu, my favorite (and my familys) are: walleye dumplings (OMG), any of the daily specials (they are always flavorful, unique and delicious), penne with chicken and bacon, linguine with shrimp, the steaks, Curly Endive & Beet Salad, goat cheese salad, warm banana cake, dark chocolate creme brulee (caramelized strawberries in the crust - wow!)... I could continue but those are at the top of the list. Ive even had a rhubarb creme brulee there, to die for! Love this place!

Im not exaggerating. Truly. My wife and I are not accustomed to eating at restaurants of this caliber. Were more familiar with a steakhouse or Olive Garden level establishment. We had the Fillet Mignon and the sirloin and both were in awe of everything on our plates. Absolutely delicious. Extravagant, tasty, flavorful, properly cooked. And the presentation was fit for a gourmet TV program. You will not regret dinner here!

This place is hopping! They are well known in the area for fabulous food that is made fresh daily by the owner. The reason waiting for a table takes so long is because it is always packed due to being such a well known restaurant. I would recommend beginning with a starter- all are absolutely delightful- all the entrees are delish. Oh, and, save a little room for their homemade bread too!

The food was soooooo goooooood. My wife and I try to visit a wide variety of restaurants and I thought I was beyond being astonished by anything. But the food was just remarkable. Yes, if you require a quiet dining experience, this place would be impossible to love. They really need to look at some noise remediation. But Id go back in a heartbeat anyway.
