The food is okay but I believe that its quite overrated and not what its hyped to be. I love small and local restaurants and this restaurant is connects the community together, allowing those who otherwise wouldnt have thought about trying African food to do so. As for the food, the Gyro here tastes the same as it does in the restaurants back in St. Louis. Side by Side test with Abdul Afandys anyone? If your hungry for a gyro, Afrodeli will do, but be willing to look for other places that may not have a mainstream or catchy restaurant name. I dont exactly remember the name of the restaurant my friend took me (names do matter!) but they had the best gyro and the softest pita I have ever had. My favorite dish from Afrodeli is the Veggie Fantastic. Perfectly cooked zucchini with a melty cheese sauce on a bed of yellowed rice usually hits the spot. Another popular option? Order the Chicken Fantastic which is basically the Veggie fantastic with chicken (although it may sometimes be dry) . The Beef Sambusas are always great, never had an issue with that as they are crispy on the outside and soft and flavorful on the inside. Overall, I like Afrodeli but once you develop your tastes past the introductory stage of African-food, youll start to see that there is much more out there.

If you havent eaten here, you need to. Trust me. They will not disappoint. My fiance and I ate here for dinner this evening for the first time. It was amazing and exceeded our expectations in every way. The menu had great variety, service was exceptional, and the food was a wonderful blend and balance of flavors. Prices were very reasonable as well. I had the Chicken Fantastic, and it was exactly as its name describes. The dish was chicken and vegetables in a rich and creamy sauce topped with grated cheese over a bed of colorful rice. It was outstanding! I have eaten many places in my life, and this was good. It was really good. My fiance had Chicken Curry and really enjoyed it also. In addition, we ordered sweet potato fries and fried plantains. Everything had a delightful and distinct flavor. The icing on the cake for this experience was the Somali tea. Its a tea with spices that I can only describe as awesome.

The wait was a bit long, but hey you are getting your food made to order not to mention they are working on other orders. One cook knew I had waited a while then personally brought me my food instead of placing it on the counter [class!] I had the Lamb Gyro and I must say that I thought the pita bread was amazing, soft and warm, which is uncommon at other places. So called Chicago style food dives, or Greek restaurants that Ive been to dont come anywhere close to the quality I had today at Afros. Anyways, I got a fair portion of meat [which other places Ive been to cant compete with], fresh fixings, delicious fries! I tried a beef sambus with their green sauce and it was good! My main thing is food temperature and everything was warm and fresh! I will definitely be going back!

Afro Deli has delicious and amazing food. Its staff are kind. The food comes fast and hot. The place is clean and wonderful. My only issue is it seems like it is a disingenuous marketing of African food to American audiences. Ive lived in Kenya - and Afro Delis Kenyan tea is nothing like what it is there. I think Afro Deli can be a great first step to getting people to understand what African food is while providing income to the African immigrant community. At the same time, I had been missing Kenyan tea like crazy and was ridiculously excited. I approached the cashier asking if the Kenyan tea is real Kenyan tea the way they serve it in Kenya, she said yes. So it seems like the staff dont even understand what they are serving. :|

Kate Kuehl I will respond to you about Afro Deli because you are straight up crazy. I love your critical review of the authenticity of the food. I feel the same way. The Dairy Queen that previous occupied this location was so much more authentic and had more personality. I also love to eat the stuff served at Crapple Bees. I wrote stuff because it really isnt food. You realize you paid less than 10 dollars for something healthy so again you are crazy. American culture has a twist and influence on all authentic foods unless they are flying in local agricultural goods daily. Hands down best food in Dinkytown/Stadium Village.

Had the lamb chapatti, fries and falafels. OUTSTANDING. The blend of rice with the lamb and sauce was perfectly measured and the wrap was nice and hot with just a slight bit of crisp...almost like fried naan. The French fries, were lightly breaded and very crispy and hot. Im not usually a fan of sweet potato fries, but they had me on those too. Great sweet and crispy flavor. Lastly the falafel. OH. MY. GOSH. Best falafel Ive ever had. Well balanced, not under or over cooked, perfectly seasoned. The sauce was a perfect fit. Going back as soon as humanly possible. YUM!

I work on the West Bank and end up at the Afro Deli at least once a week for lunch. So good! Staff and owner are great, but maybe I am biased as they know me by name at this point. It does get super busy during the lunch hour, so call ahead to order if youre in a hurry. My favorite dishes: Somali Steak Sandwich, Sambusas, and the Chicken Fantastic. If you arent into ethnic food (yet ;), try the Chicken Fantastic- its not spicy and you really cant go wrong with it.

Afro just moved into the building where I work at so naturally I had to try it. I am so glad I did. The chicken sambusa are my favorite. Everything is always fresh and hot to order. Absolutely amazing! I recommend the chicken fantastic, gyro, fries, and sambusa. The staff are always friendly too. I always order to go but it can get pretty crowded over lunch rush so it might be hard to sit down with a large group.

Somali Steak, Somali Sweet Tea - PERFECTION! The woman at the register, whose name is Essence, is exactly the right person to welcome you to this fantastic place. DO NOT MISS AFRO DELI AND GRILL - COMPELLINGLY, SPECTACULAR CUISINE!!!!!!!

The staff is extremely friendly, and after calling a couple times to order for pickup they recognized me and greeted me by name. I dedicated this summer to trying everything on their menu, and I can vouch for all of it being spectacular. Make sure to ask for the green sauce, it is a bright and cheery addition of flavor to any of their dishes. Fantastic place, fantastic people, and fantastic food.

The perfect replacement to long standing favorite North Country Co-op! These people are so friendly and passionate about connecting the community with African cuisine. Plus the prices are inexpensive, the menu is accurately described, and the food is prepared right in front of you. It's also the perfect time to learn a new language while you wait for your sambussa!

I had the Chicken Curry and Beef Sambusa. They were both bland and disgusting. The Curry sauce didnt taste like any type of curry Ive ever had and it was gelatinous and lacking salt, the Sambusa beef was under-seasoned and tasted like a defrosted burger patty. The employees behind the counter bordered between neglectful, arrogant and just plain rude. Never going back!
