My, what an interesting little place this is. The walls are filled with Mexico-themed optical illusion-style pictures like the one shown. Lots of skulls and Day of the Dead stuff. So, I immediately like this place. Let’s talk about the menu. It is large, and replete with Mexican-sounding dishes, as you might expect from a restaurant named El Molcajete. But, more specifically, let’s talk about the Token White Guy hiding in the middle of the menu at #50. The Token White Guy is Jerry, and let’s face it, Jerry does not sound very spicy. Surprise! Jerry is not who you think he is, and #50, Jerry’s Special, turns out to be what is surely the hottest thing on the menu, especially after your brain is good and addled by the surrounding optical illusions and you find yourself answering, in a confused stupor, the question, “On a heat scale from 1 to 10, which would you like?” with, “Let’s try 10!” Happily, it was Happy Hour. Margaritas, I was told, could be ordered either Small or Medium. Not sure where Large went, but it’s probably a good thing, since based on the size of the Medium I ordered I would have received a container the size of a pony keg, perhaps wheeled out and set on the floor beside me, and consumed via tapper. The Medium, it turns out, is a beer mug. I don’t mean a 12-oz mug, I mean the one where when you order a beer and they ask if you want a small one or a big one and your first thought is of course I want the big one but then you start having second thoughts and wonder whether it’s wise to drink that much beer and then drive home but you order the large anyway. I had two of those, and they were not only delicious, but absolutely necessary to provide the cooling and numbing effect upon the area of concentrated, localized pain and swelling that used to be my mouth before I started eating the Level 10 Jerry’s Special. I spent much of the meal sniffling and wishing I had brought a box or two of tissue. I fear the other patrons thought I had some sort of terrible contagion. Nope, just the Jerry’s Special. I ate half. I would add for the benefit of any other foolhardy 10-talkers that the leftovers are probably at about a 7 on the heat scale. Which is probably what I’ll order (a 7, that is) when I return, which will definitely happen.

Ive been to a lot of mexican restaurants. Unless youre pleasantly surprised with some particularly spectacular meal, you generally expect the same things. Quality version of meat, beans, rice etc. I got fajitas, which youd expect to be sizzling, delicious, normal. They were bland, not sizzling, and looked like they were microwaved and then put on the platter. I got a margarita that was possibly the worst margarita Ive ever had. It was watery with a slush consistency that wasnt very drinkable without constant mixing with my straw. And the flavor was a hyper-artificial lemon flavor. If you live in Buffalo you may not have many options. This restaurant has great reviews. Maybe just from locals who have always known it to be good without scrutinizing very much? Im not sure. Id say pass. The restaurant itself is kind of an awkward shape inside, and doesnt lend itself to seating very well. Id say pass.

The menu spans from authentic Mexican to "Minnesota Mexican" to Tex-Mex. They have something for everybody on the menu, including kids. As a fan of spicier food, I highly recommend choosing the restaurant’s namesake, El Molcajete Yucateco or the Pollo Al Chipotle under the Especialidades de la casa (House Specials) section. You’ll need a to-go box, because you get a lot of food at a reasonable price. Secondly, if you’re a fan of large drinks, the GRANDE margarita and my favorite, Dos Equis Amber beer, come in 34 ounce mugs. When I ordered one with a friend who hadn’t eaten there before, she said shockingly, “Did you order a pitcher?!” The staff is extremely friendly and accommodating and at one time, I knew them all by first name. If you go, and you don’t have children, sit in the bar or, weather permitting, the outdoor patio. The ambiance is very relaxing. Viva El Molcajete!

My husband and I just got home from dinning at El Molcajete, once again I left extremely satisfied. I love the staff. The owner or manager always walks around to make sure everyone is satisfied and really makes you feel important to his business. A fun and light atmosphere with plenty of laughter. We ordered the Fajita for two and couldnt finish it, the chips and awesome salsa, with two LARGE beers all for $31.00 - What a bargain! ....be careful when ordering the large glass beer or cocktail,I think it is a 32oz : ) I have ordered a margarita in the large...omg yum! We discovered this restaurant about 3 years ago, and every time we dine there I am so glad we went! Enjoy!!

Disliked completely. When we parked we debated whether or not to go in and decided to go in off of the reviews. Walked in to a half refurnished burger king turned into a restaurant. Staff was in no hurry to seat us, once seated for 20 minutes came back to ask for our orders. Kids meals were horrible, fries cold burger looked like it came from the microwave. Both my husband and my food was cold and tasteless. would not recommend going here to anyone. GROSS!!

I love El Molcajece Mexican Restaurant...the service is great and friendly, now I know that their Mexican Food is awesome since my wife loves Mexican Food and she loves this place but let me tell you about a little unknown secret and that is they have the best Burger in town period. It is the tastiest Burger in Buffalo or even in Minnesota. You just have to try this awesome Burger yourself.

Service was good, everyone friendly. Should have known that a Mexican and Chinese restaurant sharing a building means not so great food. Food was bland and boring. Enchiladas had not been baked nor was there enough sauce at all. Soft tacos were meat and cheese, thats it. Will not be going here again. Prices for margaritas overpriced as well.

We love El Molcajete! Very good food. Service is always very prompt and very reasonable prices. My favorite is the chicken soup - very fresh tasting! Its spicy if you get the fresh jalapenos! Yum! Also, try the delicious chile rellanos! Amazing pablano peppers stuffed with the white cheese. My husband enjoys the El Mocajete burrito.

I place 3 orders for their cheese sauce appetizer and they only would give me one bag of chips for 1 order even though I ordered 3 to go. Apparently they expect you to eat it with a spoon. We argued and asked for the manager but they still would not accommodate the order by proving chips for each dip.

Writing this two star review before food arrives. This is the first mexican restaurant that Ive ever been to that does not serve rice AND beans with fajitas. To top it off, Im being charged $2.75 to get both! Guess I wont be getting that margarita after all!

This place serves traditional Mexican food. Excellent service, reasonable prices, and portion sizes will leave you satisfied if not ready for a nap afterwards. I consider this the best place for Mex food for miles!
