The Flay Trap is on the corner of Woodward and Breckinridge. There’s a parking lot next to the building, but it’s actually for the gym across the street. There’s a public lot behind the building with metered spots, so parking isn’t really an issue. From the outside, The Fly Trap looks tiny. It’s no illusion. It really is tiny. We showed up just before noon on a Saturday morning and we opened the door, there was another couple waiting for a table. There are only nine tables in the entire restaurant plus a lunch counter. As we stood there, a line started to form behind us with a few people being forced to wait outside. The windchill was hovering around zero degrees and yet, people were standing out in the cold waiting for a table. That must be a sign. After a ten to fifteen minute wait, a table opened up and J and I took a seat. Along one wall, tables are situation in front of a long bench seat. We took a table for two. There isn’t much privacy in the setup. It’s pretty hard not to hear what’s going on at the table next to you. To make the restaurant look bigger, they put a mirror on the wall. The entire meal, I got to watch myself eat. It was effective in making the place bigger, but weird looking at myself for an hour. The waitresses kind of work on a whoever is available basis. There were three waitresses working the tables and they all took care of every table. There are a few sandwiches on the menu, but everyone around was eating breakfast food. I was assuming they know what they doing, so I ordered breakfast as well. The meal I ordered was called “The Cowboy Curtis.” It was a ribeye steak, two eggs, garlic fried potatoes, and toast. I started with two eggs over hard topped with the house made hot sauce they call “Swat Sauce” The sauce was thicker than most hot sauces and I was worried about dumping too much out, but it was thick enough that it came out slowly. It was really hot, but tasted really good on the eggs. The potatoes were also delicious and I don’t usually eat breakfast potatoes. I started to give them to J, but I took a bite and kept half for myself. The steak was a little tough, but the “wildwest sauce” it was served on top of was delicious. It was like an A1 steak sauce with a kick. The toast was a homemade wheat bread. They didn’t serve with any butter and didn’t bring any jam although I did hear other tables asking for some. I’m not a jam person so I just ate it dry. My breakfast was delicious. I loved the hot sauce and put a little on my toast. I spread it on like jam. Not a good idea. My mouth was on fire. J ordered the Gingerbread Waffle. She loves gingerbread cookies, so a gingerbread waffle should be delicious….and it totally was. The waffle is served with sauteed apples, dried cherries, and powder sugar with a cup of maple syrup on the side. She said it tasted like a soft, fluffy gingerbread cookie. She loved it. She got a side of bacon to go with her waffle and even that was done perfectly. The bacon was crispy which is the only way J will eat it. By the time we finished, we were stuffed. We sat for a few minutes waiting on our check. The waitresses were running around trying to keep up. Technically, they each had probably four tables if you count people at the counter, but they were scrambling to get food out and get people out so those waiting outside could get in. Our bill for “blunch” was just over $23. We don’t eat breakfast often, but if all breakfasts were like this one, we would probably make more of an effort. Once again, Guy Fieri pointed us to a great little diner in a place we never would have thought to look. The Fly Trap was fabulous. They call themselves “a finer diner” and I agree. It was a neighborhood diner, but not with typical neighborhood diner food.

I love going out to eat. I love to support the local and independent. and it is sad to say I will NOT go to the FLY TRAP ever again, the food is outstanding, but no food is worth the POOR treatment and super RUDE service!!! no smiles...only when the check is dropped off at the table. It seems as tho the servers hate there jobs or hate people!! I was just in today,Feb.7,2010 with a friend, over hearing a server comment how slow it was for being a Sunday... well no wonder! 3 different server came to the table before our order was taken, wet table, dirty condiment bottles, our side salads came with our meal, water glasses sat empty, and the order took a very long time and the place was NOT busy. the food is very good I will give them that. but I tell you what it is a very cold dive! the main server glares into you and acts as tho she is being put out If you are in need of anything. there are so many people who would love to have her job and its such a shame... she is just rude to everyone... always!!! a man sitting next to us ordered coffee three times to three different servers after sitting there for nearly 15 min. and just had to laugh, how pitiful. a group of four walks in and they stood there 10 min before anyone greeted or cleared a table so the could sit down. servers were drinking coffee and clearing the empty counter.. well I guess that is to be expected. it is really to bad, anyone I talk to about this place has the same thing to say the food is very good, but not worth it at all... sorry to the chef and cooks! at least they know how to do there job..

A rerun episode of The Food Networks "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives" is what sparked by interest to visit this restaurant. "Finally, a restaurant featured on the show that is in my area" I thought. I woke up on a Sunday morning eager to try this Restaurant, bringing along 4 of my family members. Upon entering, the restaurant looked charming but I immediately noticed the lack of staff, because no one was there to take our name down, people waited in line and took seat where ever they pleased. A two person party sitting down at one of the two booths that we big enough for five? Finally, after a long wait, the other 5-top was cleared off and we sat down. The choices on the menu looked good, comforting breakfast food with an eclectic twist. We ordered, all the while the entire waitstaff (consisting of an understaffed 3 people) was very unfriendly and never cracked a smile. After yet another long wait, we received out food. I had the Granola, which was delicious, topped with vanilla yogurt and banana. Others in my party had the Huevos Rancheros, the Veggie Rumble, the Oatmeal (with vanilla ice cream and cherries), and a plain cheese omelet. All of the food was great, the house-made jam and hot sauces were nice, and the coffee was also excellent as well. But the lack of organization, the slow service, and the poor-mannered waitstaff will keep me from returning any time soon. Im also now more apprehensive to trust my beloved show- "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives".
