Came to dine in and on the menu states they have udis gluten free bread as an option. Most restaurants-probably over 80% that we visit have a separate preparing area in the kitchen if they offer allergy options, especially when your paying $10 per sandwich. Having celiac our family looks for restaurants like these. So when I ordered I asked what was a safe gluten free item, she stated maybe a salad, I asked is the bacon gf- she didnt know. I think its SO important to keep staff aware of allergies. I always carry my epi Pen with me, but come on-food allergies are a very common thing these days. So my hubby ordered and we waited and waited- took 20 minutes to even get water, to say the least we were not impressed! If looking for an allergy friendly restaurant or one that is staffed enough to bring your drinks in a reasonable time look somewhere else!

Have eaten sandwiches from Root a few times and have found the food always very good, and the staff friendly and efficient. My understanding is that almost 100% of the food is locally grown. The coffee shop is connected to a small gallery, Fernwood 1891, that showcases local artists who do absolutely excellent work in painting, thrown and hand-built pottery, metal sculpture, artisan jewelry and clothing--I was really floored to see it categorized as a "knickknack shop." And, at least when I have gone in, there were artists there demonstrating their craft along with running the shop. One of the coolest things is the concrete floor in Root. Im not sure how it was done but it is exquisite. This cafe/coffee shop/cooperative art gallery is a SW Michigan small town treasure.

This place has the kind of food I look forward to every. time. You know how there are little trips you make that make you happy because it gives you an excuse to stop by somewhere really great? Root is one of those for me. The food is an imaginative take on coffee house classics, deli sandwiches, and fast fusion dining. The ingredients are as local as possible, often artisinally produced, and delightfully seasonal. The flavours will surprise you, from the sometimes savoury pastries, to the sweet and spiced soups and paninis. And yeah, there are traditional flavour offerings, too. But why eat something you can get anywhere else? Go for the fancy grilled cheese.

A high 3 or low 4 star. Somewhere between a small town and tourist time vibe. Two tables and two long benches. Benches dont move and would be are a little high for working. I saw one power outlet behind a cabinet with knickknacks. Decorated in local art. They also sell jam, takeaway food, etc. and are connected to a knickknack shop. Small selection of nice loose leaf teas. Large selection of good pastries. Their chai is from a mix but the barrista took a shot at brewing me a chai latte from their pretty good looseleaf chai tea. Free wi-fi with password. Small breakfast and lunch menu. Friendly staff.

Delicious coffee and drinks. Awesome, homemade food. Great place to look around, too, as there is a pottery showcase in the same building. You can also get yummy bread here from Salt of the Earth next door and local goat cheese from a creamer down the road. All in all a wonderful place to visit. Plus its on the way to Lake Michigan so it makes a fun day trip.

Small menu compared to others, but great small town feel. There is a a/joing room filled! w/local art and trinkets, homemade jams. You can even watch them create potter of some type at certain times. I myself feel the past couple of "special" coffee concoctions I ordered the coffee was bitter? Food looks & smells great.

Friendly staff, outstanding food and connected to a nice art gallery. I was surprised to find such quality at an affordable price in such a small town. Their Cuban sandwich was generous and the almond biscotti muffin was really good. This is my new favorite place!

We usually Eat at the Blue Goose when we come thru Fenville. The food smells great when you walk in the door, not too crowded, staff was pleasant. Parking is on the street side. If you go through Fenville not restaurants will treat u well.

Honestly the decor and ambiance was nice, but the staff was not so much! Definitely not children friendly! Coffee was so so, if you must have coffee and this is the only place in town go ahead.... Otherwise I would skip!

Love the coffee, and the unique artwork of the root! I plan to bring my wife for breakfast or one of their Bloody Marys this weekend.

Great Bloody and charcuterie plate, just took too long to receive both. Either need more help or better order filling.
