Im an African American man from Colorado and I just moved here to Michigan. I am puzzled, confused and afraid. I have purchased donuts and other groceries on three occasions at the Grand River Meijer store in Detroit and it was a very nice experience. Except that the donuts were a little stale. But each time as I leave there is a group of black Detroit Police officers waiting on the exit side of the front door with some black employees that act threatening toward me as I leave. The DPD was not there 15 minutes earlier when I first came into the store. By threatening, I mean that one of the employees will lunge at me like feigning an attack or a black female will say something threatening like "Youre not the devil?", while laughing in a giggly voice. Weird very weird. The DPD was very polite, but because they carry guns with all of this other stuff happening, I was still afraid of them also. The last time I shopped there they had a barrier constructed at the exit and the store camera could not see every thing that was happening right as a customer exits. The employee and the DPD officer stand right behind this barrier. I feel like Im being singled out. I think that they have a theft problem and the employees are trying to scape goat me so that they look innocent. If Meijers does have a theft problem the first thing they should do is drug check their employees. Here in Michigan younger people dont seem to have a conscience about stealing meat and baby formula from their employers. This is hurting the brand of black people through out the country and is very immature, small, short term thinking. It is a shame, and these 20 and 30 year olds are actually selfishly robbing all Detroiters of the opportunity to have decent shopping close to our homes. This has to involve the upper management of this store at Grand River Ave. I wish they would stop bullying me and stop stealing from our stores.

This is a complete rewrite. I am doing more of my shopping at local stores because they are continuously out of stock on at least one thing I need every trip. I have a lot of respect for the brand Meijer, but not so much for how they manage their stores. A call to the store Director was fruitless. Ive been going to this store since opening day, almost daily. Im a hobby cook, I shopped at Meijer Canton for 15 years, as well as higher end markets like Holiday and Cantoros. I worked at a grocery store for two years in high school. I know whats what. So here goes. Pros: Good food selection, secure (cops everywhere). Clean, well lit. Produce is mostly good and fresh, with a few exceptions. Id say better than Walmart, not quite as good as Kroger when it comes to produce. The pharmacy is great. Almost perfect. Lines are reasonable. People are helpful. Love it. Cons: Meat and fish are not up to par. A rancid smell permeates the place week after week, even in the packaged section. Its quite common to see packaged chicken with the plastic wrap bubbled up like a balloon. Ive stopped buying my meat and fish there. It seems like a lack of attention to detail, bordering on incompetence. The key problem in this store for the last 6 months is inventory control. They are constantly out of things I need. No ground chuck today. No buttermilk last time. No cilantro time before that. Its always something. At the self checkout, you have to light a flare to get attention. They dont scan the aisles. You have to go get them half the time, or wait 2-3 minutes. I check out far faster than I get an OK to buy beer. Beer selection is excellent, but refresh goes week over week without being restocked.

This store has not been open 90 days and has already went to hell. I placed an online order for 3 deli trays 1 pretzel tray and 2 pinwheels trays. Now according to online process the manager or other deli employee was to call and confirmed my order as well as the meat and cheese for the pretzel sliders, Honey Ham or Smoked Turkey. Now the pinwheel trays have their own designated selection. I call this store the young lady Bradi has no clue what she doing absolutely no and I do mean none at all customer service training phone etiquette etc. and after speaking with another employee(very nice) who decided to pass the call to the manager Pete, Who had no sense of urgency no sense of empathy. Seemed to be unconcerned with the behavior of his employee. After, he never was apologetic or made any attempt to re assure me, he himself was rude and said and I quote "well what meat you want" Im giving you a choice what you want. My reply never mind just cancel the order. His reply was he hung up the phone. No goodbye, sorry for the inconvenience nothing. Now I usually go to the store at fair lane, allen park and I can assure nothing like this would have ever happened. Inner city service is horrible and this store has not even been open 90 days. Shameful Meijers should be Embarrassed by the service being provided to their inner city customers.

They need to pay closer attention to their skus. The picture depicts an Oscar Meyer lunch-meat section. The more popular items such as Ham, Old Fashioned Loaf, Pickle Loaf, Turkey etc., were sold out (or stolen) and their counts were off so they never replenished. They instead filled the entire area with Cotto Salami. (Yuck). When I mentioned this to them, they didnt seem to care. They mostly made excuses such as this store doesnt carry everything the other stores do. Now I could understand this if we were talking about say, "Aunt Mables stir fried pepper and banana pastry additive, but Oscar Meyer Lunch-meat? Cmon. Ive seen other areas of the store where this same type of so-called merchandising has occurred as well. Also, even though I spoke to them politely, trying to help them, every person Ive brought this to, including the manager, has looked at me with what I perceived as an attitude of disdain. It is looking like this new Meijers store is developing a culture of negative attitudes and poor customer service.

Theyve made improvements since Ive been there last. You will need trips to Whole Foods, Asian grocery stores, and/or other grocery stores to round out your shopping. Their international isle is lacking as well as their baking aisle. For example, if you make your own chocolate youll have to 100% natural cocoa butter at Whole Foods. Their store only carries the inedible kind. Another example, their tea and coffee isle carries normal brands. However, theyre listed as carrying Yerba Mate. They dont. International fruits arent stocked often. They only carry the most well known international fruits on a consistent basis. Last, the international isle is missing staple substitutes and spices like Dashi stock, togarashi, bonito flakes, and red beans (the sweet beans). Homemade Dashi stock is better, but if you dont have several hours to whip it up you need Dashi stock.

Really nice looking store. I love the feeling that its safe and secure since the police are in the parking lot near the door. It seems pretty clean. The produce section is good. The meat department not so great I wish they had a better fresher selection. Sometimes I notice a issue with them restocking certain items. The selection seems pretty good throughout the rest of the store. The pricing here seems a little high. I like the store overall. The problems I have with this store is the slow checkouts they need more cashiers. More checkouts open. Some of the staff here are really rude and unprofessional and they seem to gossip too much about the customers. I have had a good experience with the staff on a couple occasions but mostly negative experiences. It would really help the customers if they kept the store open 24hrs.
