This morning I went to the Whistle stop with my wife, we took my daughter and son in law and their baby who are in town on vacation from Scotland. I promised them a great breakfast at a favorite breakfast venue. We waited 30 minutes for the pancakes for the baby, then another 10 minutes for the rest of the food, 40 minutes in all. Now, a couple at another table were told that there was a delay due to a large take away order being placed, but the waitress didnt think to tell us this. When she finally delivered the food, she managed to lean over and drag her cardigan over an egg on one plate. Then we had to ask for silverware, and one dish was missing the ordered toast. The final straw for me was the first bite of an egg - it was stone cold! I stood up immediately and told the waitress to take the food back, I was not waiting 40 minutes for cold food. Her response? She said "well, dont tip me!" We asked for a manger, waited, then asked again only to be told the manager was on the phone. We headed for the door, and heard the manager (a lady) say "tell them to go". I stood in front of this manager, having also heard her say to the waitress "are these the people?", and she never looked up from her cash machine. She totally ignored us! This was, without doubt, the worst experience I have EVER had in an establishment in the U.S., and I will NEVER darken their door again. Their attitude and service was nothing short of disgraceful. Maybe you should think again before you visit the Whistle Stop.

I use to love this place!! I would tell all my friends about it.. but the more I frequented this place the more the quality went down. Flies and other bugs enjoyed this place also.. however , I guess you cant control the bugs in the atmosphere the employees were rude and arrogant (the owner) I was given burned food twice! They replaced it but I had to wait a total of 30 extra minutes of my time and the party that I was with time.. they had the nerve not to give me a discount on my food which I thought was awful and the owners cocky attitude to brag that shes been open for a decade really upset me. It didnt matter to her how loyal I was of a customer because she said she had other customers.. Needless to say when you dont appreciate your customers they can always go elsewhere.. The Clique on Jefferson downtown is so much better, I live in Birmingham but its worth the drive and they appreciate their customers! So thank you for being rude and disrespectful to me! You loss a loyal customer. But if youre looking for absolutely great breakfast food The Clique is sensational!

Just tried to review this place on TripAdvisor and couldnt find it, so here goes. We were staying with family in Birmingham and my husband brought us to the Whistle Stop where he remembered coming as a small boy (45 years ago!) probably when it had only been open a few years. We enjoyed brunch so much that we went back twice more. Lots of choice on the menu, friendly greeting and good sized plates at very reasonable prices. This kind of local cafe is really worth supporting, and we will be back in a flash next time we visit.

LOVED this quaint little place! Service was excellent, food was outstanding... just like home cooked! I had the Cobb Salad with grilled chicken and it was HUGE! They offer warm pita bread and Im sure it had to be made from scratch. That was also awesome. The chicken was perfectly cooked and tasted very fresh. I only ate half so I took it home and ate the rest for dinner! My husband ordered a burger and thought it was one of the best burgers hed had in a while. Even the bun was really good! Definitely recommended!

While their specialty is breakfast, there is a wide range of items on the menu--including a turkey dinner special when I went on this weekday night. The food has a genuine homemade quality to it, and the flavor is better than the average Detroit coney island. Service is super friendly and we saw quite a few regulars waved in by the staff while we were eating. Prices are reasonable, cleanliness is just OK. Generally kid-friendly although we were without a high chair for our toddler.

For those of you that have posted bad reviews, I understand. The previous owner was not interested in running a top notch, little restaurant, instead he treated it like his own little piggy bank. He has since sold the restaurant to two of his long time employees. They have nothing but the highest regard for their customers, and are intent on bringing all of you back to the Whistle!!!! So, go back, give the Whistle another shot, YOU WON"T BE DISAPPOINTED!!!!!!!!!!

I use to Frequent this restaurant. First time in several months since we ate here. Was looking forward to a delicious breakfast. SAUSAGE PATTIES WERE HORRIBLE. PANCAKES TASTE SUGAR FREE. SUGAR SUBSTITUTE AFTER TASTE WAS Apparent. FOOD WAS LESS than ADEQUATE TO WHAT THEY USE TO SERVE. HELP WAS LACKING. Suggestion: SWITCH BACK TO YOUR OLD FOOD SUPPLY SOURCE THE PREVIOUS OWNERS WOULD ORDER FROM. GORDON FOODS ISNT IT.

Awful place. Racist. Dont happen to be anything but White when you walk in or youll get lousy service, if you get served at all. A throwback to the Bad Old Days. The visit was a nightmare and the patrons are like Stepford Patrons. Avoid at all costs. No stars for this place. It shouldve been shut down years ago.

I am a regular here for several years so my review may be a bit biased, but in general the staff is very nice and accomodating. The food is good, especially breakfast and there is more of a homely feel to the place. Its no michelin star restaurant, but in the morning for breakfast, it sure feels like it!

This restaurant has gone downhill..When the new owners took over they switched food service company to Gordons. The sausage patties are horrible. Go back to the previous company. Also, ordered the pancakes. They use to be delicious. They tasted like sugar substitute was in them, bad aftertaste.

Not particularly fancy but comfortable like an old pair of shoes. While the menu is extensive, I always revert to typical diner foods....Eggs, toast and hash browns. It always hits the spot. A table or seat at counter usually available although there may be a wait on Sunday mornings

Food is mediocre.. sausage patties not the same as with the previous owners ordered. Pancakes were so delicious in the past.. now they taste like diet sugar is in them...yuk New owners must switch back to previous food supplier to get me to come back. I wont be holding my breath.

Nice friendly diner atmosphere. Good prices. Burrito was chilli wrapped in a fried tortilla shell. Food was a bit on the salty side. Id go again; some of the other food I saw looked better.

Delicious breakfast food. Almost tastes home made. The service is excellent here as well. Great place to take the family on the weekends, but it does get packed so come early!

A few reasons not to eat at the Whistle Stop. Inattentive waitstaff, serving fake maple syrup and showing FOX news on a big screen television set above the counter.

This place has been around for years,It still has one of this best Breakfasts in the county. Excellent pies, and deserts. A great selection of home dishes.
