I saw this tiny shop while heading for some bubble tea, and what caught my eye was the huge poster of the chef with his awards. Listed alongside the picture were the types and years that he won cooking awards at international competitions. I figured this place was worth a try. My friends and I went there and dined in. The service was fast, the waitress was friendly and on top of everything. One of my friends is really picky about his food and Im a vegan, but we had no problems here at all. Some of the other reviews have said its just "American-style Chinese," and that may be so for most of the dishes...however, that doesnt mean they dont excel in what they do. The meals are prepared to order, inexpensive, and very delicious. We have also placed orders ahead of time, and they are always ready to be picked up by the time we get there. If you want some well-executed, inexpensive Chinese food in Ann Arbor, this is certainly the place to get it!

I have been dining in China Gate for many times until recently I found that they are not so honest with your credit card. I clearly remembered signing a credit card amount of $9ish and I found that they rounded it UP and it appeared on my credit card statement as $10.00. The amount is not so big of a deal and I couldnt care less to go back and ask. Ive paid by credit card in the past for this amount and rounding was not their practice before. Unless they change their credit card policy (min. charge), they are not so honest now and that reflected badly on their business ethics. If you still like their food, pay cash next time.

The food was very good, but the service mediocre at best. They were very slow on refilling our water glasses when they were empty and our was not brought out together. It was just me and my girlfriend and the main dishes we ordered came out about 5 minutes apart. Also, no one in restaurant spoke to us. The only thing they asked was, "are you resdy to order?" They didnt ask how the food was, did we need to go boxes, or said "Have a nice day" when we left. Lastly, the workers sit in the main dining area cutting up vegetables for the dishes, WITHOUT GLOVES ON!

The lunch menu got us lots of food, and the prices were very reasonable. The waitresses were timid but very friendly and accomodating. Our food arrived only minutes after we ordered it. My egg drop soup was wonderful, but the rest of the food was "meh." If youre looking for a place to get a quick bite on your lunch break, this restaurant will work well for you; otherwise go somewhere with higher quality.

They always have good food every single time. If you havent tried Chinese food before or are hesitant in eating it, look no further. If you want a suggestion for what to order I highly suggest getting the Almond Boneless Chicken(savory), General Tsos Chicken(garlicy), or the Honey Chicken (sweet and sour). Also, you cant go wrong getting fried rice. Reasonable pricing as well.

I almost always ordered the same thing at China Gate (Szechuan string beans) so its hard to comment on other food. The one time I diverted from this I ended up with a chicken dish that had so little meat and so many greasy pieces of breading I couldnt eat it. That said, their string beans were a slice of home for me. Good lunch specials, friendly staff and cozy space.

Have been looking for a place that has great almond boneless chicken. I found it! The reviews are probably accurate since someone else also gave high marks for this dish. The chicken was fresh and tender ... no reused/recooked portions in the mix. The coating was crispy and tasty. Chicken fried rice was good also. Thumbs up!!

Relaxed and child friendly environment. Wide variety of menu choices. Never had anything that wasnt awesome. Never hear patrons complain. Take out is just as quality as dine in. $20 will definitely fill you with a bit to go. My 3yr old and I appreciate the love from staff. Best choice in Ann Arbor / Ypsi area!

Very tasty, not healthy. Good service and good food overall. The bathroom setup is something unique, you have to go through the kitchen to get to it. This is a table service restaurant with a fast food speed. Lunch menu is great value, dinner menu is a bit on the pricy side.

This place gets worse every time I try it. I will not be trying again. MSG nightmare. Headaches and pains down my neck and shoulder after eating "emperors chicken" which was basically a pile of grease and MSG that looked more like puke than actual food. Eat at your own risk.

I ordered general tsos chicken and it was horrible. It wasnt spicy at all and barely sweet. The sauce was runny, and it was all dark meat chicken. The chicken wasnt crispy either. I was so disappointed because Ive walked by the sign that says the chef is award winning.

Salt and Pepper Chicken. Its very good. It has just the right amount of spice, salt and tang. I come here a lot because one of my friends likes their Generals Chicken. That particular meal is pretty good. Its what you would expect.

I visit there often during my lunch break. The food is usually great. I like the sweet and sour chicken. Its crispy, even in the sauce, and its nice portion. Make sure to try their egg rolls, theyre always cooked perfectly.

anyone who says that its american chinese food hasnt been there recently! they have a full menu of traditional chinese food. also, their american chinese food is MUCH better than the average takeout restaurant.

I come to Ann Arbor every other week and I always order from China Gate. The peppercorn fish and kung pao chicken are delicious. China Gate has some of the best Chinese food Ive ever had--and Im Chinese!

Wonderful food. Not just Chinese, quite a few southeast asian items as well. Be sure to order from the "specials" menu. If you dont want to dine in, orders for pickup are prepared extremely quickly.

Just got a large sweet and sour chicken for my fiance and I and there were only 10 small pieces of chicken in it. What a ripoff for 11 dang dollars and what a hassle to park. Never again
