Officially open as of this week, Burger Dive is the first of the many new businesses that are set to open in Assembly Square as part of the revamping and renovating of the area. At the edge of Somerville, almost in Medford, it stands as a standalone venture, backed by the same guys that are behind Max & Dylans and Papagayo. Walking into the joint tonight, I expected them to be working through some kinks, and they were a few, but overall I was quite impressed. We proceeded to order a couple of burgers. I got the blue burger ($7.99) which featured bacon and blue cheese, alongside a ton of guilt and shame. But it was good. Greasy but good. The misses got a regular burger and liked it as well. We almost got tater tots to go with it but instead opted for the pretzel-coasted, fried pickles which were quite tasty and washed the whole thing down with a couple of fountain sodas. The damage? About $23, which isnt bad. However we werent quite fully satisfied yet and decided to get a smores milkshake as we hit the road, a dessert which set me back a further $5.99 and which was pretty good as well although far from outstanding. Everything there is cooked to order and the place looks very promising. The kitchen held their own however the front of the house had a couple of issues with the POS system and their credit card processing system went down for a few minutes as well, right as I was about to pay. It is their first day though and apparently it was Verizons fault and by the time we left everything all of the systems were back. All in all, the place is a welcome addition to the area and dare I say better than Five Guys? Yes, I think so. Definitely like the decor better and the menu feels less greasy as well. However it was very dark in there, a tad too much for my taste. Maybe add a few more lights? I will give it four stars for now, mostly because I have faith in them and because Im feeling generous. However the front of the house needs more training as the person who took our order wasnt all that knowledgeable and didnt seem comfortable with the POS system. And not all that friendly either. But Ill give it time. That being said, I still think that Whalburgers is better although this is much closer so they can have an advantage if they play their cards right. Oh and how about adding a seasonal burger in there?

Service was fantastic, food was great. This is fast food made from real ingredients... not sure if the typical fast food crowd is going to get it. Tried: a) the tater tots with cheese sauce. The tots were as expected... fried well. The sauce tasted like an american/velveeta/cream mix with a touch of butter, or maybe some butter milk. Just what you want on such a thing. b) the buffalo chicken sandwich. Real buffalo sauce with franks. Real piece of chicken breast, fried to order... nicely cooked. Not greasy, not dry. The "blue cheese fondue" on top tasted kind of like a roux based blue cheese bechamel. c) the burger called the [something i forget] melt with swiss, caramelized onions, and mushrooms. Bun was fresh and soft. The mushrooms were a touch heavy on the black pepper (super nitpicky, they were still nicely done. Cooked to a perfect medium with a nice sear. Caramelized onions could have gotten a bit more caramelization on them, but they didnt add any sort of sugar to them, which is a HUGE plus.... I want caramelized onions, not onion jam. Personally, for griddle cooked burgers, I prefer a higher fat blend, giving the "sear" a more dominant flavor than the more rare beef on the interior. They opted for lower fat beef, which doesnt give you as much of the nice sear flavor, but gives you a really nice fresh beef flavor. The cheese was nice, though I dont remember too much about it, specifically... which is fine. Overall, an excellent burger. d) the strawberry shake. Nice vanilla ice cream based shake with, I think, frozen strawberries. Not absurdly thick, creamy, rich, and better than average spray cream (I think it came from one of the canisters that you add the nitrous cartridges to.) Excellent. Nicely done. (I will say, however, that Im not sure that those burgers were, in fact, 7 oz burgers as their sign says.)

[Service]: There is not much opportunity for a place like this to win on service points unless you have something happen that would warrant correction. A normal transaction is that you place your order at the counter, then go sit down until your pager rings. So, the part that can suck is waiting for your food (too long), or something is wrong with your food. I cannot say Ive had anything wrong with it, just that sometimes it can take too long. Especially for a small order like only fries or tater tots. If the staff were trained properly, they would be able to spot an order like that and prioritize fulfillment. [Food]: I usually order the BD bacon burger (50/50 burger), but I have tried others like the brunch burger and buffalo chicken. The burgers are good, but not great. At the very least, the burgers are made fresh, but they lack the wow factor that you get from Max Burger. They serve alcohol here, and I think thats what really appeals to some people. They mostly go after the same market as Tasty Burger, except Tasty Burger are in better locations and appeals more to the college drunkards. [Decor]: The doors to the patio seating are garage doors. Im not sure if this was some kind of garage before. The seats are hard, the trays are metal, and you have exposed ceiling (a little industrial like). [Atmosphere]: It can get loud in here. Get patio seating if available.

The burger was undercooked and over priced. The size of the burger its comparable to Wendys Burger. Mmm pay a dollar for a burger at Wendys or pay 10.00 for a burger at Burger Dive. The name fits it well a DIVE! Stay clear you will be unhappy with our 1/3 oz. burger. If they increase the servings and reduce the price I will be back otherwise your best bet is right across the river at Four Guys! As one yelper said it best, "Nearly $14 for a burger, fries and a coke is an absolute joke. It doesnt help that the patties are miniscule for the pricepoint and the toppings which could have saved the affair dont do much to add to the burger. Fries are crinkle cut and nicely crunchy, pairing nicely with the house sauce."

For me this is just another burger joint. I would definitely return but I would not run back. One thing that would inspire me to return is their selection of alcoholic milk shakes. They have a good variety of sauces for their burgers and fries but non of them particularly blew me away. Also tried one of their specialty hot dogs and found it a little overwhelming, probably wouldve been better off with a regular one. I thought the tables outside were a little dirty but thats kind of what I expected. This is a decent option if you are looking for a quick bite in Assembly Row.

The burger and fries were pretty good. The place itself is a complete cluster-f of epic proportions. You can either order at the counter with a live person, or you can stand in the way of all of the people waiting to order and order from a tablet mounted on a wall. Where to wait to pick up for food if youre not sitting at a table is clearly not something they thought about when designing the space. THERE IS NOWHERE TO STAND. I also waited an unbelievably long time for one burger and fries. Should have just gone to McDonalds...
