Service was good, but but the portions were small for the price and in general, the food was ok. My boyfriend started out with the caldo stew, he said the broth wasnt very good and almost had a grainy texture. It also had way too much Kale in the soup and almost no meat. I had the arugula salad with goat cheese..lets just say you get one small quarter sized round of fried goat cheese with a mound of arugula. Although the salad was dressed nice, for the price, I expected a bit more goat cheese. We also ordered a side of fries, which was the only thing that we really liked, crispy and lots of them. For dinner my boyfriend got the rigatoni with heat..lets just say you get a small plate of pasta, and thats about it. There were a few pieces of chorizo and the shrimp (those that were there) were so small, it was ridiculous..this dish was so not worth $19! It was basically a plate of rigatoni! I ordered the vegetable ragu..again not at all what I expected. It was a plate of beans with broth with a huge mound of Kale. There were maybe two mushrooms, a few strips of carrots and a pepper strip mixed into the kale and that was it..Im sorry this is not a meal and again, not worth $16 (I still cant believe I payed $16 for a plate of beans and kale)! This was our first and LAST time coming here! If your coming to Gloucester and you want a nice place to eat, I recommend going to Passports! I should have went there last night, but I thought I would try something new..boy was I wrong. This place is totally not worth the money they charge you!

My wife and I have been enjoying the Franklin Cape Ann almost as long as its been in business (13 years) and its always been our favorite restaurant on the North Shore. The others that have come close, but are more expensive are Tryst in Beverly (now closed) and Duckworths in Gloucester. We love the cozy ambiance and the booths in the lower level of the Franklin, and the service has always been friendly and attentive. They take reservations, they have the most interesting and subtle cocktails Ive ever had, and weve NEVER experienced a disappointing meal there. Yes, the menu is smaller than some other restaurants, but there are enough choices to make everybody happy, and the ingredients are always fresh and well-prepared. Oh, and the portion size is just right. None of this Boston-nouvelle-cuisine that leaves one feeling ripped off. We ate there recently, and I had the special - braised short rib with a reduction sauce on a bed of risotto that absolutely melted in my mouth. It was the best meal Ive had there in a string of superb meals. If you try the Franklin, for dessert, get the Chocolate Lava cake on vanilla bean ice cream. So good!

My husband and I stumbled onto this hidden gem. As soon as we walked in we knew we were in the right place. The hostess greeted us and we were seated in an intimate corner. We each ordered the tomato bisque and filet mignon (which melted in my mouth like butter) with a fabulous Cabernet... Delicious! Our server Joe was an absolute delight and was quite entertaining although not over the top but just right. We loved the food, the ambiance and the service. Highly recommended!

We have been dining at The Franklin since shortly after they opened in Gloucester and it is by far, the best of the North Shore. We have never had anything less than a magnificent meal here. It is consistently, perfect. The staff are exceptional, and the manager, Maria, is a delight, always helpful, and knowledgeable of the menu and wine list. This restaurant is five star in every category, many great memories at this spot. You will never be disappointed dining here.

Each meal has been a delight...service, atmosphere, food, cocktails left us looking forward to the next visit! No detail is overlooked. Food is creative, delicious and beautifully presented. We love the lighting and the way it compliments the Paintings on the walls. If that isnt enough, the best-ever martinis

Great atmosphere... Dark enough to hold the ambiance, bright enough to appreciate the aesthetic appeal of thier great food ... Seasonal menu will keep you on coming back. Save room for dessert. Well behaved children are treated well.

Its not family friendly which is a good thing as it is one of the few places in town that you can have a romantic dinner for 2. The kitchen is usually spot on and periodically theres live music. Nice drink selection. A gem.

Cold food, slow service, it took an hour between first course and entree being served. My wifes steak and frites were cold. Service was weak. Well never return.

Great energizing atmosphere. The only snag if that you sometimes need a flashlight to see what you are eating. Good music on Franklin Fridays.
