After being told it was an hour and half wait last week, a four and a half hour wait yesterday, and somehow making it in on a 30-40 minute wait today my big question is this: why? On first entering, youre bombarded with tacky, pseudo-douche, atmosphere so jokingly retro even Guy Fieri would have trouble taking it in. I ordered the french toast and my girlfriend ordered a monte cristo and we shared a side of cheese grits. When you hear that the bread used in the french toast is homemade, there is an idea that this will be a step above the rest, but here this is not the case. While good, the top and bottom of the bread are burnt as if seared on a pan but left the sides soft as if never exposed to heat and only the egg mixture. This leaves the toast with a strange division between mushy soft and crispy burnt. Youre also charged for a hotel-shampoo sized container of real maple syrup, unless corn syrup substitue is your fancy, in which case youre fine. The monte cristo was heavy, but not in a good way; too much dry egg, too large to eat, and the taste was average. The coffee was classic diner coffee which is fine because many great places Ive went to have served coffee of that quality. Overall, Id say this place is too average for such ridiculous wait times. Next time Ill rise to the occasion and make the "best breakfast in Boston".

This place gets five stars for being delicious and food-allergy-conscious. My friend has celiac disease so she cant have food that has even come into contact with wheat/gluten. After we told this to our waiter and ordered, the manager came over to discuss the food and let us know one of the dishes we ordered (the nachos) wasnt gluten-free. We were told that they have a separate grill to handle food allergies (but not a separate fryer, where the nachos would end up briefly). Instead, we shared provolone homefries and my friend ordered a gluten-free burger, and she had no reaction to the delicious food from Friendly Toast. Thanks for that! Besides that, the food is always great in general and they have some pretty creative dishes. They also have a pretty nice tea selection. Fantastic place for brunch, just make sure to put your name down early via an app like NoWait because the wait can be 2+ hours on a weekend during brunch hours.

Fantastic service and very courteous staff cannot overcome the gaping hole in quality that is the food. Potatoes that are undercooked, broccoli that could have used another few minutes to break it down a bit. I love crunch but this was just hard. The potatoes special seemed to be a mistaken attempt at spice by drowning it in pepper. As for the caribbean waffle, it was never cooked enough. Just a soggy mess with decent flavor. The place is one of the most overrated establishments I have ever visited. Coming from a town spoiled with solid breakfast choices this place seems to do well because so few establishments offer the homefries and egg American breakfast so many people love. As for whopping portions they are large but nothing to write home about. In the end I wont go back unless Im invited and they are paying. Its not terrible but it certainly does not blow me away. Omelette was honestly just a mediocre mess.

This is the most overrated breakfast/lunch spot ever. I swear, the placebo effect of have a great name, "The Friendly Toast" is never stronger than in this restaurant chain. If you want an omelette, it will be a hopelessly burned pile of mess that resembles a sock turned inside-out and the middle will be cold. If you want home fries or potatoes, they will be terribly undercooked. Dont bother asking for them well done either...there is no hope. In fact, when a girl/friend/girlfriend suggests The Friendly Toast for a date or simply for brunch, I cringe. It is at that point I know we will never be true homies. Please do your gastronomical self a favor and dont buy into the placebo effect that is the restaurants namesake. Great name for a restaurant, terrible food.

Came in for a late dinner with friends, the orders on 3 out of seven were wrong. Buffalo chicken Mac and cheese had no buffalo chicken in it, asked for the buffalo chicken to be put in and the plate came back with plain grilled chicken. Then another plate was a pancake that was burnt and asked to be taken off the order the waiter said no cuz it was already on the grill. Then nachos was ordered with extra sour cream and salsa of course had to wait ten mins for it. No silverware was available til after we got our good. All in all I gave 2 stars only cuz its the only place with great prices with a great location but....... very poor service.

Management seems great to have manager play hostess. I wanted to sit in a specific section, and they happily complied. Brunch wait gets rather long, but isnt bad with help of Nowait app and in-person with complete party there. Overall feel and cleanliness is great. Servers are great. Food was okay and on the heavy side, so come depending on what youre looking to eat. Didnt enjoy the sausage. Oatmeal French toast is pretty much white bread with no incremental health benefits. Cayenne cheddar bread was overcome by other parts of the dish. Diner decor appropriates a lot of Chinese art.

Wonderful little place! Group of 8 had all orders come out at the same time, all hot and delicious, with the exception of 1 missing order which was promptly fixed, but not charged to our bill. Our server was friendly, and we basically had the entire basement to ourselves. I think we lucked out, since we didnt have a reservation and only had to wait approx. 15 minutes, but we were quoted 2hr wait. Granted, thats for a group of 8, so your mileage may vary, but from how busy it was, Id suggest a reservation! Definitely would come back again, everything was fantastic!

Im going to start by saying that Google needs to reevaluate how they determine the "$" scale for prices, The Friendly Toast is NOT a $ restaurant. Its more of a two and a half $$ restaurant. Now The Friendly Toast Could have been great but like every other place in Boston, the biscuit and gravy are underwhelming. Its seems like everyone in Boston must enjoy dry, flavorless, overpriced food, except when they enjoy dry, peppery, overpriced potatoes. And the coffee was lacking, as well. The only saving Grace was the friendly staf Food 1 star Staff 4 stars

Of all the places weve visited in Boston over the past few days (our first time here), The Friendly Toast in Back Bay was by far the friendliest and most attentive. Christine took excellent care of us and made us feel welcome like no other person here has. We went there for breakfast and found lots of options. I had one of the breakfast quesadillas on special that day - very tasty. We never eat at a place more than once while on vacation, but Ive wanted to break that rule and go back to Toast. If we ever come back to Boston, well definitely be eating here.
