Ive been going to Stone Mill Bakery since it opened, but in the last year my experiences have been steadily deteriorating, to the point of swearing off going there any longer. I think the volume of business is hurting quality, as what used to be reliably good food is now assembled perfunctorily and quality has been unacceptable at least half the times. The breaking point for me was an inedible taco salad, with greasy chips, dry rice and beans, cold cheese and stale lettuce. Some sandwiches look incredibly appealing, like a salmon sandwich, but it then tastes fishy and greasy. Ive gotten bread and cookies and they were stale. They recently came out with a new salad with beats and tangerine slices and roasted pistachios, and the first time it was exceptional (fresh), but the second time it was a huge letdown--everything was just a little off (maybe a day or two past its prime), sort of mushy and damp and limp. Ive been let down so many times in the last year with this hit or miss, back and forth fresh and not so fresh preparation, that Ive decided its not woth the hassle to go back. Stone Mill Bakery: get back to basics; your customers (like I used to be) dont mind paying a premium, but expect absolute freshness and the best ingredients every time; now you guys are slinging plates and food together so fast its really affected the quality of the food.

Eat there a lot, can be inconsistent at times, but generally good. ***EDIT*** First of all, did you know you could get wine from the Wine Merchant next door and bring it over to Stone Mill? I just figured this out (after 3 years) and I think that is the best thing ever. Ive also come back to change my rating from 4 stars to 5, and add some comments... Ive been eating there a lot lately (since what I consider to be the demise of Tarks in the same shopping center) and I have been SO happy with the food. Ive changed my mind about inconsistency... it has been good. Real good. New cooks in the kitchen? Not sure. The Brioche... dear lord its good. The cupcakes are gone now (please bring them back, and sell them individually PLEASE?!?!) but the outdoor seating gets lovelier and lovelier. The service has been surprisingly good lately -- I really hope they can keep this up. Their prices are HIGH but I feel as though their food and service have managed to come up to the price point and make it truly worthwhile. And again... cupcakes... please??

Food is excellent, have never had a bad dish. The lemon bars are incredible. Staff are extremely friendly. Owner is usually behind the register taking orders and treats everyone as if they are a long time regular, even if youve never been there before. They will take the time to explain items, answer questions and ask how you want your order customized. That, plus the crowd makes for a long line at times. The layout is a bit awkward and crowded, but they have added in some chairs to wait. There is also outside seating, if the weather is nice, but the chairs are a bit uncomfortable. The only negative is the price, quality is much higher than chain restaurants and you will pay for it (plus add in the upscale location). Lunch here will cost 2 or 3 times what youd pay elsewhere.

Recently had an 11am breakfast at SMB. The coffee was a bit strong but smooth tasting, and served with milk on the side (4 out of 5 stars). The breakfast burrito was tasty but cool to the touch, as was the skimpy side of potatoes that came with it. I think most people expect this dish to be served warm. The croissant was like bread and a big disappointment. A good croissant ought to be flaky, airy and buttery. Food was delivered to my table promptly. But I had to wait 10 minutes for a coffee refill, which came only after I walked over to one of the staff and asked for it again. The atmosphere is nice. But the food is mediocre and the service spotty. I wish there were a local cafe like Paul in Bethesda MD which simply blows this place away both in quality and service.

Was there recently on a beautiful morning, birds were out, lovely sun, everyone was just darn happy. Until....you got into Stone Mill Bakery. Busy, busy. Waited for 20 minutes (after the order was placed) to get a egg sandwich, which was 7.99? What? Wow, I should of just eaten the napkin, it would of cost less. When the owner was just standing around, tried to talk to him, casually for a bit. He pretty much ignored me, and went on about standing there. Please. You are not the "King of the World" and we are not beneath you. We pay huge dollars to get food (20 minutes later) in a hurry. (what?...you wanted it in 10 minutes - we cant cook eggs in 10 minutes! - it takes a full 20 minutes.) Needless to say, not impressed. Not at all. Even if you WERE a neighbor. Eh.

Ive been to the Stone Mill for several times since Ive moved to Maryland and it has been a great dining experience each time. They have a sample of each entrée so you can see how it looks before you order it. Although it is a bit pricey, I think it is worth it for the quality and freshness of the food. Yum! If you dont want to spend a lot of money on dinner, their soups are outstanding! They have a great deal of two soups and one loaf of bread of your choice - my husband and I take advantage of this awesome deal at least once or twice a month. Their coffee and baked sweets and also delicious. Finally, the staff is wonderful. All very helpful and very, very, very nice! All the staff Ive seen has seemed to really enjoy their jobs and helping the costumers.

The food is fine. However the service is absolutely terrible. After a nice discussion about what to order, the young man behind the counter suggested the Brisket panini, his favorite. I agreed and said Id have that. Then a salad and a turkey sandwich and 2 loaves of bread, and 2 quarts of soup. Not only did it take 25 minutes to get a damn turkey sandwich, they forgot not only to MAKE the brisket panini but they didnt even put the order in or charge me for it. I suppose I should have checked the receipt more closely. But come on... They had 2 registers taking orders on a busy saturday at lunch, 2 guys serving the orders out of the kitchen and the place was swamped. Skip it. Bad service and overpriced food is no way to go through life.

Went to have a nice breakfast with my husband and a friend. Have been here several times before. What a totally disappointing experience this time. Will not be going back. The food didnt come out at the same time. We had to get up and keep asking the server for out food! When it did come out, only two of us got our meal, the third had to wait for another 10 minutes. Our breakfast seemed like it had been sitting in the warmer for some time, and we both had 3 little pieces of potato. How do mess breakfast up. They werent even busy! I dont care what kind of reputation they have, we wont be going there again.
