Heard this place was good and even better than Joellas. Food was good and a few things were unique to Royals but I wouldnt say better than Joellas. They have a similar menu when it comes to entrees but a large beer list, if youre a beer drinker (I am not). The Pimento chesse grits were the best thing I had. I also got the Mild tenders, husband got Medium (not much spicier) and we shared the Macncheese and baked sweet potato. They were all good but nothing special. They did have Big Red on tap which was great along with Fanta Grape and Ale8 which I never see. That is a plus. I would go back but it wouldnt be my first choice.

If I were on Death Row, Id pick here as my last meal. Went two days in a row when I was in Louisville last time. The boyfriend and I like to joke about driving two hours just to go to Royals and come home. I ate the spiciest stuff they had and got complementary milk and gloves to help me eat it! Well worth it too! If that isnt your thing, the regular hot chicken is to die for as well--and they have pretty neat souvenir cups that are cheap and good quality. 11/10, would recommend to anyone at any time for any reason <3

This chicken is really fantastic. I ordered hot, and it was flavorful, with a kick. I didnt need the ranch sauce that came with it. Full disclosure, my mouth may be made of asbestos. My dining companions thought medium was spicy. Everybodys sides were good, ranging from cucumber salad to a backed sweet potato with sorghum butter. There werent many sugar-free, nonalcoholic beverage options. The main room is loud and theres a long wait, but the food is good and the outdoor seating is charming.

Finally tried Royals and Hot Chicken and I liked it! My buddy tried the tenders medium with some beer cheese Mac and cheese. I had 2 jumbo (yes, these are huge!) tenders hot with spicy potato wedges - both were fresh and had good spicyness. The kicker for me is the Mississippi Comeback sauce which added more flavor. Prices were reasonable coming to about $10 per person (less without a beverage). Would recommend a visit to Royals if you like spicy and are in NuLu.

Great place to grab chicken, sides, and a drink. The chicken is great, crispy breading and perfect inside. I went X Hot and was sweating by the end, dont want to know what the even hotter one would do! Sides were great (broccoli bacon salad especially) and had lots of variety. Large craft beer selection and some Bourbons as well. We sat outside, service was prompt. Id go back again today if I could, highly recommended.

If I could only eat at one chicken place for the rest of my life, Royals would be it. Hands down. I ate Nashville hot chicken in Nashville, and it didnt hold a candle to Royals. (Sorry, Hattie Bs) Plus, the staff is awesome and the owner Ryan is a great guy from what my friends who have worked for/currently work for him have told me, and I also love his other restaurant, Feast.

Ive been dying to try this place! because their food looks so good on Instagram. It did not disappoint - fabulous chicken that can be tailored to your tastebuds. I live 3 hrs away and we have nothing like this at home. The Chicken Poppers and Pimento Cheese were great starters. The inside was clean and the employees were very nice and attentive.

Theres no signage out front so unless you KNOW where its at, you may pass it. That said, the place is really clean, spacious, and the staff is friendly. The food (chicken tenders & potato wedges) were good but the seasoning was heavy for my taste which made it a little salty. Next time Ill ask for light seasoning.

Incredibly tasty fried chicken and delicious sides. Great place to take out of town guests. The only negative that can be said about Royals is that there isnt more of them. Dont be scared off by "hot" chicken, everything is available to your liking from zero to heat to Im afraid to find out.

The food I got was good but not vegetarian friendly... you got like 4 options, also slightly confused by the concept. There is a a huge beer selection but they close early and are a family restaurant? Im sure there other stuff is good, so if you are a meat eater check it out

Fried chicken here was great. The flavors and different spices were great. We preferred the tenders than the half or quarter chicken. Would have enjoyed trying the hotter spice level, hot was tasty but not hot in comparison to Princes in Nashville. Sides were excellent.

Something here for everyone! Folks that have lived in Louisville for years still dont know theyre there. Located on Market Street, the line is out the door constantly. That says a lot right there. Dont miss out if youre looking for something different. Family friendly.

Hands down my favorite chicken / hot chicken place in Louisville. Ive had the hottest and the opposite and all are great. Their sides complement the chicken and other main items well. Bourbon and beer selection is also great. The bourbon shake however is a must try!

Super long and slow lunch line is the only reason Royals Hot Chicken didnt get a 5-star rating from me. Great food and their fish sandwich (daily special) was awesome! Really tasty sides. Easy for those downtown to take the Main/Market Zero Bus to NULU for lunch.

Delicious chicken (and non-chicken) selections offered with a broad array of sauces ranging from ultra-mild to thermonuclear. Come hungry and try the chicken sandwich with sauce of your choice and slaw. Extra-crispy breading stands up to the sauciest flavors.

Stumbled upon this place while I was in downtown Louisville for the day. So glad I went, as the hot chicken sandwich was absolutely delicious. I wish this place could be a regular in my lunch routine. However, Ill be sure to go back the next time Im in town.

Great atmosphere with outdoor seating. I tried the chicken tenders at medium, just the right amount of spice without breaking into a sweat. The honey mustard is a great dipping sauce. Local beer selection, wine, and more. Everything you need for a good meal.

they have good chicken tenders. you can custom the hotness and sides are also good to go with chickens. service quality is satisfactory, location is good, need some improvement on interior i guess unless its a perfect place for youth and office time lunch

Not for the faint of heart. I loved it. My wife and son were done in by the medium Nashville hot. For me the Hot Nashville hot was great and I could go higher. Recommend the cucumber salad to offset the heat. Pimento cheese grits were good. Nice place.

The only thing better than the food is the staff. Service is top-notch. The chicken can compete with anything in Nashville and is without a doubt the best in Louisville. Ryan and his team know how cook and they know how to treat the customer.

They got my order completely wrong. But just because they gave me the wrong order. When I called they put my money back on my card and I thought that was cool. The food I got was good. But its expensive for the portions of food we got.
