Saw the positive reviews and wanted to try out a German restaurant. The food on their website looked good. Their hours were very late, so I had a hard time finding a night where I wasnt busy to come out for dinner as I prefer to eat around 4:30-5 pm. After making a relatively long trip to come here, I walked inside this very small restaurant and as I came up to the counter they didnt say much. I had myself and one other person with me. I just said "Two please" and they just dismissively said they had no room. I was confused so I thought they meant I needed to wait, but no - there is no waiting. They dismissively told me I should have called ahead to see if I needed reservations, because they apparently require them. I have never been to a restaurant that required reservations, and certainly not one as small as this one. Id expect to need to do that for a high end establishment, but this place was in a strip mall. No one apologized to me after I explained that I checked their website and saw no indication that it was by appointment/reservation only, I was just told "You shouldve called and checked." Walked out, and Ill never be back. Terrible service, places like this deserve to go out of business. I have never been to such an unprofessional and uncaring restaurant, and Ive been to places of all sizes. Dont care how good the food is with service that bad.

I was saddened by this Restaurant after seeing great reviews… the good people of Louisville must have never had great German food, and I pity them. This restaurant is in a strip mall, but seemed to have a decent small interior atmosphere. The service was slow and not very friendly or personable… they didn’t have any draft beers, but I was pleased to see some good German bottle beers, though the selection is slim. The menu is also very slim, with no appetizers, and only a few choices for entrees… I like schnitzel, but if you don’t, you should know that half the entrees are schnitzel. The prices seemed high (about $20/entre), but I figured large portions would justify the price… I was wrong. This was the smallest German meal portions I’ve ever had, maybe 4 oz, and not particularly great tasting. After we ate, we were not at all full due to the small portions, so we decided to try the deserts… they took up 1/3rd of the menu and on display looked very good. Let me re-emphasize “looked,” because these were very bland… how a desert can disappoint is beyond me, but not surprising is that the desert was also over priced. If the meals were less then $10 and the deserts were reasonably priced, I wouldn’t be so critical, since it’s not “awful,” but since they choose to charge so much, they should be expected to serve higher quality/quantity food.

I started with the potato soup and it was more a puree that included what tasted like a cheap hotdog, no potato flavor it wasnt awful but not memorable. The main course was rouladen with potato dumplings once again it wasnt awful but not seasoned and as favorable as it should have been and the dumplings were very gooey also tried the red cabbage which was entirely to sweet and had no other flavor. The make the mistake that most Louisville restaurants do they cook bland to cater to the uninspired diner instead of adding that flair which would have you ready to immediately go back.....Cook as if you were feeding your friends or family not just putting food on a plate for a stranger !

I heard so many great things about this restaurant so I was looking forward to our visit. We had our 1yr old with us and got a lot of cold stares as we walked to our table. The restaurants in a strip mall do I didnt think it would be this kid unfriendly. Our server was nice enough. But the feeling of being "unwanted" never passed. The food was ok nothing to write home about. Very bland. The dessert was also very bland. Im not really sure how chocolate can taste bland but it did. Definitely not worth the money in my opinion. And definitely not kid friendly.

Exceptional dinner. I had the special salad- a pear and arugula salad, which was one of the best salads Ive ever tasted. The dinner itself was delicious and beautifully presented. The sauerkraut was the best Ive ever tasted and the goulash was fork tender. Strawberry napoleon was as big as my face and not overly sweet. My server was very personable and knowledgeable. She suggested ordering off of the secret menu on my next visit. I would definitely recommend this restaurant!

This place is the best. I have eaten at several places in Germany and this food is better than the food in Germany. The people are fantastic and always provide the best service. This is our go to place for special events and whenever we want great food prepared with care. Save room for dessert, they are great! Dont miss the live accordion music, it makes me feel like I am sitting in Germany....

A hidden gem! The reviews looked great so we decided to give Gasthaus a try. We were pleasantly surprised. You dont find places like this much anymore, and its easy to see why this restaurant has been in business for so long. The staff was terrific and the food was great. This was our first trip, but well definitely be back again!

Having lived in Germany for 9 years, I guess my expectations were high. The food was good, but just good. Not great or anything to write home about. The food was very blend. Nothing had its distinct taste separating each item from each other. Service was ok, as no one checked if I needed anything else during my meal. Good try....

Waited for years to eat here! Had been told by business associates who had been here the I had to try it on my next business trip. Never got the chance. Then when I visited with my husband, we made a point to have dinner at Jack Frys. Better than I could have expected. DELISH! Awesome service.

Food was blah but dessert was very good. Im sure this is authentic German food food.. but I think my version is better. German potato salad had little flavor, potatoes very undercooked and uninteresting. Sauerbraten was way overcooked. Nah. Not feeling it.

Was not expecting the service and the way we were treated. I was blown away. The waiter was new but very well trained. Food was very nice and the wait was very little. I will be back and I will recommend this place. thank you.

Gasthaus makes authentic German cuisine from scratch, including some of the best desserts in town. They have both a standard menu as well as seasonal specials that often change every week.

The best German restaurant in town. Period. Annmarie and her family are as wonderful as the food they feed you. This author could quite literally eat his weight in their red cabbage!

The price made it less than ideal for me. I did think my food was good, but not worth how much i paid. But the other 6 in my group could not speak more highly of it.
