While the food is always good, the experience today with the staff left a lot to be desired. Normally a bit of rude behavior is part of the price you pay to eat here, but today went way over the top. The place was packed so we split our party, one group to order and one group to find a table. We spotted a four top that was just clearing. I had mentioned to my mom that we needed five seats but the lady tasked with clearing things off was having none of that. Before I could even think, she jumped at me with "you cant sit there". I was taken aback by how gruff and rude she was. A nice couple was just finishing up on the next two top table and had witnessed this interaction. They rolled their eyes at what they saw and politely offered that table as well so we could split our party. The "queen of the tables" jumped on me again and told me I couldnt split my party and sit at separate tables. WOW, I must have missed that rule. She then said that there is a table in the back that is about to clear and that we should move there. So off we went to find that table. We stood there looking dumb as we waited for them to wrap up but they eventually did and we moved in to take the table. I made the mistake of moving some of the plates and trays over to make bussing the table a bit easier for her. Again, the "queen" jumped on me as she approached us, seeing what I was doing and told me not to move anything on the table. Again, I was shocked at how rude she was. I proceeded to tell her with jest, that I have never met a more gracious and polite hostess. No reaction from her to this. So I stepped back and let her clear things. But wait, it gets better. She proceeded to ask me to carry one of the two trays off of the table and help her buss things to the back! I couldnt believe what she had asked me to do this but Im a polite soul, so I helped her carry what previously I could not touch. Ill give you one guess if she thanked me!!!! Not. When the other half of our party showed up with the food they were likewise very put off by how the front staff treated them. Again, normally youre greeted with some rude treatment and that is just part of the experience. But one of the staff snapped at my wife that "this must be your first time here" because she asked if fries came with her sandwich. In addition to the smart remark, the lady taking the order didnt wait for my wife to place her full order, even though my wife told her she had multiple orders to place. The lady cut my wife off mid order and started taking the order from the folks in line behind her. She paid little to no attention to my wife and as a result, our order got jacked up because the order taker was well less than concerned with helping my wife. I cant believe that a place that serves such great food, especially the baked beans has to be soured by the staff that treat you as if you are a huge inconvenience. The food gets a five star, but the well less than polite service wipes out four of the five stars. Gates, do you realize there are many great BBQ joints in this town? My business goes elsewhere from here on out.

Decent experience on a first visit. Had the beef on a bun with fries and drink. The sandwich was great and the fries were fresh. Everything came fairly quick. The spicy BBQ sauce wasnt too hot — just about right. Service was good as expected. We were in and out. Nice meal for the price. The only complaint was our table was a little wobbly. Not worthy of removing a star. Lunchtime wasnt too busy, but a small crowd came in behind us around 1:00 PM on Wednesday. Id imagine they get busier in the evenings. I recommend Gates as a decent place for BBQ in Kansas City, and its nice they dont hold back the BBQ sauce like other places Ive come across. UPDATE: Went here on a Monday. It was much busier this time around. I got the turkey on a bun and cannot recommend it at all. It wasnt nearly the value as the beef (which by the way, this time, my friend said was wonderful). What I received for the same price as the beef were two thin very dry slices of turkey on a bun. I must say it was horrible. Another issue was how the entire place was filled with billowing smoke to the point of being somewhat uncomfortable. The server also forgot my drink and began to serve someone else. I couldve easily given it three stars after this visit, but Im hoping for a better experience next time.

My wife doesnt like the sauce and she kept refusing to eat there for 10 years from our marriage when we visit from Omaha, after we moved to Kansas City and I made her go she had only one comment "why have you been keeping this away from me all these years? " she loved it and will only eat at Gates, nothing else in town even close. She likes the mild sauce and I like the hot. For 30 years I cant find any thing better. Yah the front line can be intimidating to new people especially during busy lunch time but after the first visit you should get a clue. Do ask for lean for burnt ends and dont let them chopp it if you are ordering by the lb or it will be a mess. Chicken and beef are great. Dont eat pork so cant say about ribs. I dont like eating in the restaurant I would take it home or to the office,

The Staff could have been polite instead of just rudely shouting "How can I help you?" If she had looked happy it may not have seemed mean. We did a carry out. I wont suggest this location to anyone. A very uncomfortable experience. The cashier did not smile. The staff did not smile. No one seemed even slightly happy to even be there. When we paid and went to leave all the cashier said (again no smile and no joy in her voice to compensate) was "Thanks Bye.." We left quickly since I couldnt wait to get out of there. We ordered 2 sandwiches. One actually had a decent portion of meat, I let my husband keep that one since mine ended up having 2 and a half little slices........ My husbands was 3 times as much. Good thing Im a light eater. I used to love Gates... No so much now...

To pricey, long line, poor customer service. Been here several times, and each time the lines are long with the staff moving slow. They are eager to take your order with the "Can I Help you" as you walk through the door, but the wait is to long before you actually get your food. On our last visit, they were in such a rush to "help us" but as we began giving our order, her attention quickly turned to another task and we were totally ignored in the middle of placing our order. The BBQ is good, but pricey, unless your ordering a sandwich, or beef on bun as they call it which is $10. For a plate with multiple sliced meats expect to pay over $20 which does not include sides. It seems that Gates has become so well established in KC that customer service is not a priority anymore.
