I would give a 3 out of 5 rating in general because my experience tonight was Bad/Good half and half. Decoration: No difference from any other asian restaurnts ---Dark, gimmering light with a main color of red and oppressive use of wooden funitures. Very similar to "Appare" in Des Moines but no Japanese feel at all. Wait: Worst part of my experience tonight. We were told to expect a "10~15 mins" wait. It turned out to be almost 30 minutes. We asked if we could be seated at the sushi bar because theres nobody there, but was told theyre short of staff tonight and they cant gurantee good service if we sit there. Ironically, after over 25 minutes of waiting she asked, "do you want to sit at the table or the sushi bar". I looked around as I seated mysef at the booth I saw there were several empty tables at the table area but they still let a large crowd of people wait in the lounge. Food: My friend order three different tyes of sushi(Maki): Spicy Tuna, Spicy Salmon, and Philly Roll. Theyre $5.25 each and come in 6 pieces. Honestly the look wasnt too pleasant: the rolls are small and the rice doesnt look very firm in the roll. The taste was also mediocre, nothing special. However the Katsu Don I ordered was very good. With $7.95 you get a box of seasoned rice with egg cooked with veggies and mushrooms in it on top, and a piece of fried pork tendeloin. The pork was okay since Im not a fan of deep fried food, but the egg was good because its special favor with many fresh veggies in it. It also comes with soup and salad. Probably the highest value dish out of the entire manual. Service: The waitresses were unprofessional in many ways. Apart from the hostess mentioned above, the waitress brought out my Katsu Don with no saunce for my pork tenderloin. When asked she offerred seafood saunce or Ginger sauce and said:"They dont usually come with sauce." The manager saw this and brought me the "Katsu Sauce" and said I should dip my pork in it. The conflict between the waitress and the manager makes me feel uneasy. My friend asked which one is salmon and which is tuna but the manager failed to tell. I think its understandable because Fujis been open for only 2 weeks and it takes time for staff training. Price: Compared to Taki and other japanese restaurants in the area Fuji is expensive. The average dinner entrees from the sushi bar are $16. They should either improve their service and food or lower their price because its not worth the money at this moment.

Since I found out how much I like sushi, Ive made it a point to try to visit at least one sushi restaurant in every city I visit. I havent yet made it to one on the coast, but Ive tried many inland sushi restaurants, including all those currently open in Des Moines. Fuji is the only one that has never disappointed me, and Ive now been having lunch there approximately once a week for a year, and several dinners besides. Naturally, peoples taste in sushi will vary some, but I continually have troubles with other restaurants sushi not being as fresh as Id like-- and to add insult to injury, its often masked by wasabi, even if I ask for my sushi without any. I appreciate that Fuji allows you to add your own wasabi should you choose to do so, and in all my frequent visits, Ive only ever found two pieces of fish that tasted at all "off." Neither of those was bad compared to what Ive encountered at plenty of other restaurants. Ive always experienced good service there, and Ive never had to wait for a table. If youre concerned about the service, Id recommend ordering for take-out (which they will gladly do) or going at off-peak hours.

The restaurant is pretty new. Decoration is quite decent. It has four parts: sports bar, dinning tables, sushi bar and grills. I went there a couples times. Overall feeling is the food is quite good, service is nice. Don’t blame me that I am a raw fish lover! The grill can seat 12 guests and chef is in the center to cook food in front of you. Chef plays his utilities with all kinds of trick, also let guests to pick small pieces of food from air. It is full of fun, kids just love it. My favorite is the sashimi. One of the sushi bar chefs is quite creative; he will place your dish with different decoration and style. One example is he places the spider roll with a chocolate web. Also recommend to go there on Tuesday. Martini is about $4 and all the sushi/sashimi/roll has special price. I have been a couple of bit city to taste the Japanese food. This restaurant is in Ames , such a small town. It surprises me that I can find a decent Japanese food here. But compare with other kind of food in Iowa. Its little pricy. So the Tuesday special price looks reasonable.

We were seated under a broken vent in the ceiling, it is approximately 45 degrees outside tonight and cold air was blowing onto my wife, children and I. We all left our coats on asked the server if there was anything that could be done, nothing evidently. Kids were shivering and complaining so ultimately we took our food to go as it cooled faster than it was served at the grill as they serve your meal in sections and we waited until it was finished. We boxed it up and left unhappy and hungry. Brought the kids to burger king and headed home. So now on the drive home Im wondering how med rare filet mignon and shrimp will reheat in the microwave. The manager told me she is aware of the broken vent and out needed to be fixed, but she gave me a 15% discount off the $135 bill, so I guess its alright then? Maybe dont seat people at that table? We have been to fuji many times, think its time to check out Ohanas.

I wish I could review their food, but we couldnt even get to that point. I called in an effort to place a to-go order. I called at 3:52pm before a meeting (they open at 4pm). The phone was answered by a young woman who told me she "couldnt" take an order because they didnt open until 4pm. I attempted to explain that I was going to a meeting and was hoping to place the order before that. I could barely get the words out of my mouth without her repeating that she couldnt because they didnt open until 4pm (8 minutes). So, at 4:30pm, I tried to call back to place the same order, however, this time no one answered. I was given the option to leave a voicemail, but not speak to anyone. I was truly shocked that the person answering the phone didnt have the courtesy and customer service training to take the order early. I have worked in the food service industry and this is just bad business.

Terrible service! We were seated in between two hibachi grills so there was no view, had we known we would have asked for a table instead. We were sat next to a group who was already done with their soup and salad. As the waiter handed us our drinks, he asked for our order. When we told him we werent quite ready, he rushed us and said the grill was already on, so we had to order right then. Not a decent moment to look at our menus without the waiter staring at us for our order. As though it was our fault they sat us with a more advanced party. Before anyone had even finished their meal, the waiter brought everyone their check. Excellent food, but the experience was ruined with terrible service.
