Nothing can make up for poor service. This place has decent vegetarian curries, but dry and burnt naan, and charges a hefty service fee for any group 5 and over. Unlike Indian Garden, this restaurant does not give you menus that clarify these additional costs or tell you of the fees beforehand. One of the ladies in our group has a gluten allergy. She had to wait almost 10 minutes for someone to tell her what food did not contain wheat when the restaurant was barely filled at 11:45 AM. At the end of the meal, we asked for a Northwestern discount, which they declined, when their website stated otherwise and we had called to confirm days earlier. This wasnt a big deal. The most disappointing aspect was when we asked to pay individually, the waiter patronized our group of ladies by saying "you dont seem to understand what Im saying, we cant split the check for your group in our system." When asked why they couldnt treat us as individual customers, the waiter continued to rudely speak to us as if we were dimwitted. The waiter finally went to find the manager after turning around with an exasperated expression on his face. In the end, the manager came over and agreed to let us pay individually, but charged us a hefty service fee. None in our group will be coming back. We also will not be recommending this restaurant to any of our Northwestern colleagues for personal or university business. There are so many great places that offer better food, and more importantly, better service. Overall, a somewhat traumatizing dinning experience on what should have been a great lunch gathering of work colleagues on the Friday before a beautiful weekend.

Staying at a hotel one block away and decided to try for some variety. The Gaylord name carries some weight and the online listing seem to indicate it was associated with the old classic in California. Well, the name is the same but the food aint. Decent looking place. Service was fine. Wine list pretty bad, although they do carry an Indian line of wines which is novel. I wouldnt recommend them but it was nice to see it on the menu. They had an extended list of martinis and cocktails, which maybe is what I would do next time (cocktail and snack food). Menu is pretty broad, with a good variety of snacks (bhel puri, etc) plus north Indian stand-bys like samosas and pakoras. They also have some samplers for $10. Samosas were decent; crispy if a tad oily, with some spice. Chutneys were watered down but decent, and they did provide what looked the the standard Bedekars mango pickle which was very helpful. Good selection of normal north Indian fare plus dosas and other south Indian. Also good selection of thalis. Prices for thalis are good for the amount of food you get... like $20 for the vegetarian that included soup, two subjis, dal, rice, raita, naan, which was enough food for two truth be told. Of course, where it counts is the food and I wasnt impressed. The food was pretty bland and non-exceptional. Add salt and spice and it was tolerable, but it really isnt worth a trip given there is very good quality Indian in Chicago. My advice is to find some place else.

I have been a customer for several years and I have never felt like not going back until this last visit... 2 coworkers and I went to the buffet for lunch so there were 3 of us women together. When we first got there, we got the usual visit from one of the waiters asking if we wanted anything to drink and we ordered drinks. Five minutes later, another one of the staff members came and offered us drinks WHILE OUR DRINKS WERE ALREADY SITTING ON THE TABLE IN CLEAR VIEW!! After that, each member of the staff took turns visiting our table and continuously interrupting our meal to the point where I just did NOT enjoy my lunch at all. We had at least 6 or 7 different visits to our table asking "do you want drinks?" or, "how is everything?" and "how do you like the food?" I even had one staff member ask me if my hair was "natural"? while another asked me if I "owned a hair salon" because I changed my hair... Total overkill and WAY too many visits to the table. Every 5 min, we had to put our forks down to answer questions. I am almost certain that I will never go back there. SO STOP STALKING YOUR CUSTOMERS WHILE THEY ARE EATING!!!

In August of 2010 I planned a birthday celebration for my brother and 4 other family members. I called and made a 2:30pm reservation. I called back and asked if it was alright to bring dessert (his daughters made cupcakes). I was told dessert would be fine. We arrived at 2:45pm with a party of 6. We were immediately told the kitchen closed at 3:00pm and we would have to leave. I said not only did I make a reservation, but I called back and was told it was fine if we brought dessert. At no time did anyone mention the kitchen closing. He repeated that the kitchen closed at 3:00pm and we would have to leave. I persisted by saying this was a birthday celebration and all 6 of us were standing there and I made reservations. The owner of Gaylord refused to accommodate us, refused to compromise and refused to discuss the matter. I have gone to restaurants for personal and professional reasons for 30 years and never been treated in this manner. I will never go back and caution you by sharing my experience.

I had most devastating and frustrating experience among any Indian restaurant i have visited during my 5 years stay in US. I visited with my wife and 18 months toddler on 4/12/2017 at its chicago location to have lunch buffet. Unfortunately within a minute of us taking our table, my kid started crying so my wife started taking care of him and took him outside the restaurant while i went ahead and started having the buffet. As my kid was crying continuously we decided to move-on and went to pay my bill. To my surprise i was asked to pay for both of us while my wife have not even picked the plate or even drank a glass of water there. This shows the insensitive and money thirsty nature of people running this restaurant and i personally do not feel i by any logic was liable to pay for both when only one of us ate there. I would seriously suggest avoid going to the same.

Fantastic food and service! During a recent stay in Chicago at The Drake, we walked the short distance to Gaylord Fine Indian Cuisine. On the evening we were there, the back of the restaurant was isolated with curtains for a private party... an Indian family was celebrating some family event. We were warmly welcomed and promptly seated. The wait staff was very attentive and we were impressed that all members of the staff were attentive and ready to assist us, not just one assigned waiter. The menu is comprehensive and it was hard to choose. For our starter we selected Samosas and they were the best weve ever had. The pastry was perfect and the stuffing was balanced and savory. For our entrees we chose Chicken Tikka Masala and Chicken Vindaloo. They were both excellent. We will definitely be returning to this restaurant on our next visit to Chicago.
