The name sums the place up, down home country cooking. The food itself was pretty simple & tasty, nothing over seasoned. My husband & I decided to give this place a try since its only minutes away from home. Reasonable prices, health inspection sign rated a 91, and it had a nostalgic/vintage atmosphere... old signs on the walls, art deco mirrors, the front waiting area has a mantle with antique oil lamps, wood bench seating looks like they were old church pews. It was pretty packed when we got there. Warning: The noise level gets pretty loud too when packed... you cant even hear yourself think at times. (Plus add a screaming toddler that reached ear piercing volumes. What fun! At least she sang familiar tunes once in a while and I would join in... "E, I, E, I, Ohhh!")One true disappointment was when we walked in and were never greeted nor explained to that a name was to be taken down for the wait. And although very busy, the servers that came up to the front, numerous times, had every opportunity to make eye contact and explain that there is a wait. Doesnt matter what type of service establishment you run, customers should always be greeted and acknowledged . The saving grace, aside from the food, was our server, Lexi. She was very nice and easy to talk to, a very accommodating server. She always checked on us and was on top of refilling our drinks or if we needed anything. The place is worth giving a try if you enjoy country cooking.

We went to Gritz today. New to the area we were excited to have a true small town Southern breakfast experience. When we entered, we asked to be seated at the table by the window because it was a little larger .We were told that because we were only a party of 4 we could not sit there. We were told it was for parties of 5 or 6 people. So we were crammed into one of many over stuffed overcrowded boothes and tables along the wall. This left us smack up against other families with crying babies and the sound of the clatter of the kitchen. As we were leaving we noticed a group of 4 local young men sitting at the larger table that we had requested. I mentioned to the waitress that there were only 4 of them, and yet there were 4 of us and we had been told no. This was the same waitress that told us we could not sit there. She kind of stammered a bit and said "oh well they always order a lot of food so we let them sit there." How did she know we would not order a lot of food? In fact, we did order a lot of food. But apparently we were not the preferred customer as the locals are. As to the food, the biscuits were dry, the country ham was thin dry and tough, tough, tough. The pecan pie is a warmed piece of pie out of a box, not homemade. Sadly, I could not recommend this place. Even the silverware was dirty and had to be replaced when we sat down. The grits that accompanied my breakfast however, were very good.

We had lunch for the first time yesterday at Gritz. My wife and I each got the 4 item veggie plate. The cream corn was nothing more than Kernel corn, nothing cream about it. Chicken and dumpling was not even close, just a hunk of dumpling like in the cup. The fried okra had been sitting under a heat lamp until it was stale and chewy. Corn bread tasted as if it had been under the same heat lamp, dried and crunchy and at least the margarine spread made it ok. The butter beans and sweet potato casserole was the only decent items on our plates. Waitress never offered to refill my wifes coffee, but she said it was good. I went up to pay the male cashier and he didnt even acknowledge me AT All. He was talking to other people behind the counter and at the bar. If he would have ask or even acknowledged me except from taking my card while doing something else, I would have let him know that we were dissatisfied with our experience. The reason I do give them 2 stars is we have been there twice before for breakfast. The first time was excellent and the second was OK.

Went to Gritz one day while killing time for an appointment and asked the owner Greg for water in my styrofoam cup and he asked had I eaten when I told him No he said it was rude of me to come in there for water while people were waiting to pay their check. I told him I waited in line. I wouldve thought hed say well you should come have lunch one day. I sure hope someone behind me told him that it took him longer to say that to me than to pour some water in my cup. I sure wish I had said to him that I pray everyday that Ill be treated the way I treated others yesterday. That really HURT my feeling. I was actually thinking about getting some chicken and dumplins after my appointment but not after that. How would you feel?

The food is okay the servers were amazing!! I have been a frequent guest since I move to McDonough in June. Eveytime damily and friends vist, I have akways recommend this place.Today was no exception, I simply asked the elder woman who was at the register if they offered military discounts to personnel with valid I.D. Well, a simple no would have sufficed. Instead she said, "Are prices are already good!" Thats good to know! Already GOOD!!! WOW!!! I really liked this place but I will not recommend it for any civil servants or any of my fellow paratroopers (82nd AIRBORNE ). Because their prices are already GOOD.

The food is good, I have gone a few times but they are SO BUSY on the weekends and peak times and since it is first come first serve with the tables it can be confusing as to who got there first and who is still waiting and the "order" of the line. There is no system of "buzzers" for being seated at a table. The one time I tried to come with my husband on a weekend we ended up leaving to go elsewhere because we were waiting with no idea how long we would end up waiting in line and it felt very unorganized. The times I have gone in off peak times I have enjoyed the food!

Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic. Im here in McDonough (one of the most polite towns Ive been to, BTW) for work. Its refreshing to see a true family diner, as they are becoming unicorns. Now, certainly you tend to go to a restaurant based on the quality of food (which was great) but this place offers something else - the people. I think I had conversations with 8 people while I was here. Mind you, Im a complete stranger, and these folks chatted with me like I was a regular. The owner even gave me a souvenir, but Im not supposed to tell anyone.

Im not even sure how they have a 4.1 star review. I have been eating southern cooking since I was born and that wasnt it. The cole slaw was way to sweet and the cream corn wasnt sweet at all. I ordered 4 veggys and only got 3. Then it took another 15 mins to get my 4th veggy with my meal. When I mentioned it to the manager he didnt seem to care and didnt offer any kind credit off the bill. It was over priced to start with as well. If you are a true southern I would not to to this place looking for southern cooking. It SUCKED!!
