Atmosphere- I felt like I had stepped right into a page of Southern Living magazine. The Cafe at Cakes & Ale is bright and cheerful. I loved the southern simplicity introduced by way of the chalkboard menu, fresh flowers on the tables, and even the clean scented candle in the bathroom. The air smells of fresh baked bread and the sounds are of a bustling little cafe. The Cafe is attached to the restaurant Cakes & Ale and is on the smaller side with only about 8 or so tables. The space is ideal to bring company to for coffee or even brunch. I dont recommend pulling out a laptop or a book here as it doesnt fit with the community aura of the cafe. Coffee- They were brewing the Sumatra blend of Counter Culture on the day we went and it came out steaming and delicious. Coffee is served with milk and sugar on the side and is presented with a cup and saucer. Cute. Classic. Service-You order at the counter and then a waitress will bring out your order. The place was very well staffed with at least 6 people working. We noticed how the staff was involved in a helpful and friendly way, offering refills and anything else you might need. For as much traffic as we saw come through The Cafe in the hour and half we stayed we were amazed at how well maintained the place stayed. Location-Ideally located in the Decatur town square. If you visit during the morning or day the street parking will more than likely not be too difficult to find. Walk around the town square and go shopping in the many boutiques around the area afterwards. Legitimacy-Super legit! Its part an nice restaurant and has a full-functioning bakery. I chose to sample something from the array of baked goods by ordering a cherry-pistachio biscotti which was delectable.

Disappointing! I meet with a group of friends monthly to try a new restaurant and was excited to dine here this evening. However, I should have been aware from the ridiculousness of making a reservation that this place would disappoint. After pulling teeth with the woman on the phone, I was able to get a reservation for 6 people; however, when we had one more unexpectedly join our group, we were told that they do not set tables for 7 people...WTF?!! So, you have 7 paying individuals at your restaurant, but you won’t set the table for 7? Thus they gave us a hard time about adding a chair to the end of our table; we should have left then. Meals were super small, super expensive, and not all that they were hyped up to be; my friend ordered a salad for $13.50 which basically was two pieces of hard toast with melted cheese topped with mushrooms. This was supposed to be a meal? My "short ribs" ($14) reminded me of Campbells Hearty Soups served over polenta, definitely not enough to fill me. Never will return or recommend this place to others!

Recent trip here was disappointing. Not because of the food--which is prepared by the chefs at Cakes & Ale and is exceptional--but because of the false advertising. We had eaten at the Cakes & Ale restaurant on December 30, and received a card inviting us to eat at the cafe from 5-8 p.m. and have half-price wines, along with specially priced menu items. When we did so, we were told the half-price wine special was no longer running, which was odd. Odder still: when we received our bill it came attached to the same card, telling us we could enjoy half-priced wines at the cafe from 5-8 p.m. (we ate from 5:45-6:30). When we pointed this out to our waiter, he admitted this was misleading, and asked for our names so he could communicate our dismay to the manager. We never heard back from him about this conversation, and we paid full price for our wine and food. Quite disappointing.

Had a delightful snack while in the area. Not every item id a home run. Cheese plate is a little boring. Duck egg salad is a bit over seasoned, but the crunchy sweet pork cracklings in its side salad are delightful. Desserts are very good except for the moon pie. Those was too dry and hard for my taste. Service was excellent and friendly. When I mentioned my disappointment with the moon pie, it was quickly taken off the bill. Will return in the future.

Every time I go, I get this air of "Who are you and why are you bothering us with trivial things like taking and serving your order". I find the atmosphere to be as if they are so good and hip that serving customers is just beneath them. Good but overpriced pastries, and high priced mediocre coffee round out this establishment. Do yourself a favor and walk a block in any direction to one of the many other fine eateries in Decatur.

Horrible service and food. It took over an hour to get our food. The food was over priced and came in very small portions. The service was overall bad. I would never go here again or recommend it to anyone....I was so hungry after I left that we had to go to Raging Burrito next door (which is very good food!)

Great coffee and tea that I had while there. Cake was good but a very pricy for the portion of cake you got ($9 for a small slice of cake). Coffee was a much more reasonable price which is the only reason it didnt get 3 stars.

Beautiful modern cafe. I was there as part as a food tour. We were presented with a chocolate tart with a malted topping. It was delicious! And it was organic! Ill be back!
