My husband and I got takeout from Cafe Bombay last night on Valentines Day. Although I very rarely write reviews since I have small children and do not have much free time I do appreciate reading reviews in order to make a decision. A place/thing has to really amaze or disappoint me to warrant a review. I am writing this review to help others not have an extremely disappointing experience like I had. This review is strictly about the food and not about service or decor of the restaurant. I think I can honestly say it was the worst restaurant food I have ever had. (Maybe Ive been lucky so far?) In this day and age because of social media, restaurants cant get away with putting out bad food. We ordered 3 entrees ...Chicken Vindaloo, Palak Paneer, and Navrattan Korma. As soon as I opened them, I thought they looked extremely glossy and greasy and as soon as I tasted them my suspicions were correct. They had an unpalatable greasiness to them. (And I am non a believer in low fat foods. Healthy fats are extremely important but I digress.) The Vindaloo was probably the best out of the three dishes but the chicken tasted overcooked. The vegetables in the Navrattan Korma were also overcooked and mushy and the cream sauce had an unpleasing texture and overpowering. The worst of the three dishes was by far the palak paneer. I honestly wondered if perhaps the seasoning and spices might have accidentally been left out. It had no flavor of any sort and no salt. The only thing you could taste was the oily texture. I dont know how this dish could have been so ruined. My frozen supermarket palak paneer would have been better. I have made this dish myself a couple of times so it is not that complicated. I will not be ordering from Cafe Bombay again.

This is likely my favorite buffet in Atlanta. Before I found this place, I was fairly lukewarm towards Indian cuisine. Coming here and really giving everything a chance totally changed my feelings. Indian cuisine rocks, and this place does it justice. The main dishes tend to rotate from time to time, but theres generally a few mainstays such as chicken tikka masala, biryani, tandoori chicken, paneer, garbanzo beans, and of course, naan. The tandoori chicken is especially a favorite, it has kind of a smoky spicy flavor to it that makes it hard to put down. The tikka masala is divine, but I will say, the sauce is very rich. It will fill you up quickly if you let it (and at a buffet, I assume you dont want to be full too quickly). Also, if youre vegetarian, have no fear. They have one entire line for vegetarian options, and one entire line solely for meat-based options. The service is generally decent. A few times we waited on water refills (which youll need due to some of the food being a little spicy), but the staff is very nice and accommodating. Overall, the lunch buffet here is top notch. Highly recommend even if youre not a huge fan of Indian cuisine, as I think this can convert you. If you do like Indian, all the better. I believe that the buffet is 12-13 dollars, which is a steal for the quality and quantity.

Wow, the food here was spectacular. Aloo Tikki Chole appetizer was an amazing concoction of potato fritters smothered in spicy chickpea goodness with yogurt. The Afghani chicken, in a delightful mango sauce, was oh so yummy. Mango Lassis were delicious. Rice was awesome, garlic naan top notch. A+ on the food. They were pretty busy, but the food came out in excellent time, it was a mellow atmosphere with no air of panic or stress from the staff. I read some reviews beforehand and many people complain about the service. Service is curt, to be sure, but I would hesitate to call it rude. Cultural expectations play a large part in peoples perception of good service. If you are one of those people who insist on being lavished with attention and fawned over when you dine out, then you will probably be disappointed. I happen to prefer a more hands-off approach, and being forewarned helped a lot. Knowing what to expect I actually found it quite efficient, and the gruffness became kind of charming, strangely.

By far one of the well decorated Indian Restaurants in Atlanta, Cafe Bombay also surprised us with some good service. The people were friendly and almost prompt. The restaurant was clean with some good ambiance, just about right lighting. The food was quite good, but soon we realized we may have to stay away from the place for a while. Think the chef was trying to offload a ton of cooking oil on us. While the Biryani and Bombay Aloo we ordered tasted great, they were dripping with oil. The soup was good but could have been better. The Nan was great but again, could have lived without the extra butter on top. If you are conscious about the fat content, you may want to order some other dishes but would certainly recommend checking if they could do away with some oil. Other wise, the menu choice was great and the food was good. Would probably go back here again, but not right away.

First let me say this - Some of the items were really good like the Korma the Pakodis and the Naan BUT me and my family went for a weekday buffet lunch and there were only 7 items available for Vegetarians. As a non vegetarian who doesnt eat meat with my parents, I am sure their tandoori chicken is fantastic - but ONLY SEVEN items is freaking ridiculous. They couldnt even make a vegetable biriyani to go with the chicken biriyani. It was freaking sad To make matters worse the manager sicked this fresh Indian kid to talk to my parents and I (full fledged Indian-Americans) and give us crap. Ridiculous service. There are better Indian restaurants in this city both in terms of authenticity, buffet (HOW A INDIAN RESTERAUNT is judged), or if you want classy... decor and ambiance. NEVER coming here again.

We had a big reservation for a baby shower and the manager a.) Lost our reservation and then had a bad attitude about us calling the family member who made the reservation so that we could present him with the correct info: "Why did you start calling her before we were even done talking?" "To make sure we gave you the right information." b.) Wouldnt extend the buffet for an hour after the event started late, which was their fault for screwing up the reservation in the first place (throw us a bone guy) and c.) Charged us more than we agreed to pay per person for our group of 40-ish people. Also the samosas were not very good and the salaans and masalas were mediocre. Their naan, which is basically just bread, was the best thing in the buffet.

We have been here twice in the last six weeks and loved it. The dishes are well seasoned, the naan is light, buttery, fluffy and large, and the service is attentive and fast. Some reviewers have complained about the service, but it has been great for us. I know about the experience (that someone else posted) about Indian customers getting worse service (it has happened to me at other restaurants), but not here. In fact, the first time we were there, our three year old was having a melt down and we had to switch from dining in to take out. The staff was very understanding (understandably, they were probably eager for us to leave!) and did a great job. The chicken 65 is good, but not as good as Zykas. Everything else is top-notch.
