I gave two stars because the stuffed mushrooms were good, but that is where the good stops. The first time we ate there last Fall, the food and service were very good, even though the place was pretty busy with only two waitresses and one bartender. Tonight the story was very different. There were five waitresses, one bartender, and a lady who identified herself as the manager. With only about a dozen and a half tables, there should have been no problem with service, but there was. When we entered the restaurant a few minutes before 5:00PM, there was nobody there to seat us. The bartender seemed to be busy cleaning behind the bar with only one customer seated at the bar and already drinking. He didnt even greet us. So after several minutes with no visible staff other than the disinterested barkeep, we decided to seat ourselves. Several more minutes later, our waitress arrived and busied herself getting ready for service. A few minutes after that--about ten minutes after we sat down--she brought us some menus and took our drink orders. Nobody seemed to know what the specials were, so when we asked, that was checked on the sandwich board outside. When we had questions about the specials (price, size of steak, soup flavors), each had to be checked out individually. Each time we asked a question, our waitress (the manager) had to go and ask someone else. All in all, it took over thirty minutes to place our order from the time we walked through the door. A little bit later, as more wait staff arrived, several of them gathered outside around the specials sidewalk sandwich board to write down the specials. Having previously been in the business, that is always written down in the kitchen on a board or piece of paper for the wait staff to see along with specifics for each dish including meat weights where appropriate and prices. Our spinach and artichoke dip was okay, but for a place wishing to be classy, serving that dish with plain corn chips is far from hitting the mark. A nice sliced, crunchy crusted French baguette would have hit the classy mark. There were four of us in our party. One person ordered chili. I tasted it and it was very bland and very hot, like someone added far too many hot peppers. I like spicy food, but that was just too spicy for the average person! Two people ordered Reuben "poorboy" sandwiches. First of all, they were not poorboys, they were grilled in the manner of Paninis. There was only four very thin slices of corned beef on a hunk of stale "French" bread (which resembled about 1/3 of a loaf from Sams Club), a very small amount of sauerkraut, a thin smear of some kind of sauce, and a paper thin slice of cheese. Served on the side was a handful of kettle chips. The cost? $11.95!!! I have had FAR better Reuben sandwiches for less money than that. The fourth person ordered the meatloaf which was served with some roasted seasoned potatoes and a very small side salad, all on the same plate. The meatloaf was bland and had been heated in the microwave, so it had dried bits around the edges and overall was rather dry. The roasted potatoes were very, very salty. And one of the first things you learn in culinary school is to never serve hot and cold food on the same plate, especially when that cold food is lettuce which wilts easily. The manager did remove the chili from our ticket because the elderly lady in our party just could not eat it. She was not asked if she would like anything else, though. Another thing that was undesireable about the place was the seating. Many of the tables in the center of the floor had large dining chairs that could not be pushed under the tables, so they stuck out in what little room there was betwen tables. Overall, if they were to remove three or four tables, seating would be far more comfortable. As it stands now, the place is far too crowded with furniture that is too large for the space. I would hate to see the kitchen..... UPDATE: I just heard they got a new chef. We will have to return there soon to give it a try.

Really enjoyed the ambiance and music. My cocktail, the "Bramble On", was amazing. Highly recommended. Spinach artichoke dip was fantastic. I truly enjoyed the hint of cilantro. Honestly, best Ive had! I could see it being a little too salty for some peoples palates. My wife enjoyed her shrimp and grits despite it being spicier than what she typically likes. I tried the grits and they were very good. The greens were also good, which is something I rarely enjoyed. I ordered the Steak Chimichurri. The meat was very well prepared. The Chimichurri sauce was fabulous. The garlic potato hash was a bit overcooked and chewy. The seasoning was rather salty as well. Service was passable. Good timing but not very attentive. Not good when there are only two tables in the entire restaurant. Overall, we enjoyed South Market and would gladly return to try other menu items.

I have been here once before, on a Thursday during lunch. At that time it was great, our waitress was super attentive and friendly and the food came out quick. I brought my husband back with me expecting the same, but it was terrible. We went in at 630 and left at 735 without our entrees. It took 30 minutes just to get our appetizer! Im not, by any means, picky about certain things when it comes to a restaurant or the experience because its life and things happen. But when there are 2 waitresses and 1 cook it bears a problem with me, especially when a table that came in 30 minutes after we did gets their entrees before us. The waitresses werent accommodating and I left highly unsatisfied. Maybe Ill be back for lunch, but Ill never come again during dinner.

Terrible experience! Dined in this past Friday. The fish tacos fell apart. The sashimi tuna salad was so salty/drenched in soy, it was uneatable. No compensation! ! Tonight we thought we would give it another go. Ordered to go, sashimi tuna (soy reduction on side!!!) and a french dip. Was told it would be ready in 15 min....1 hour later...we are still waiting for the waiter to bring out the food. I already paid in full and am still waiting at this point. To say Im disappointed is an understatement ! I really enjoy eating /shopping local and seeing local businesses thrive! Unfortunately, I dont see this place staying around....not with this kind of service.

First visit. Not family friendly. Very cramped seating. They are trying to be an upscale restaurant and are falling very short of that. Food & service below one star. No kids menu. We had to ask the server-They offer only Turkey & cheese roll ups and grilled cheese for kids. Act as if its a nuisance to have kids with you. More for older adults looking to drink a lot and sit for hours listening to live music. Food was terrible, and came out cold. They even ran out of lettuce while we there so they couldnt make a Caesar salad. Servers were in their own world, and had to ask several times for assistance. We wont be back.

My wife and I are dinner regulars here now. Though the menu, at first glance, may not appear extraordinary; every dish weve had has been fresh and thoughtfully prepared with an uncommon touch- each bite is met with savory delight! From the Specials to the meatloaf (not the mundane usual), Id bet every menu item is worth trying. And Michael behind the bar always has an interesting wine or cocktail recommendation. Prices are reasonable, Service has been efficient and friendly, and the Owner most gracious when we met. A welcome change in Pace (sic), Thank You South Market for a real reason to leave home at dinnertime!
