This is insane and involves a cockroach. Im not from DC, but about every 6 months when I go, I always go to eat at Meiwah. It is some of the best Chinese out there with a great bar with a lot of fun cocktails. So I took a group of 8 there on Friday night prior to the Preakness. We ordered a lot of drinks, appetizers and entrees. Shortly after the entrees came my friend screamed and jumped up on the booth as a cockroach, YES, a large, about 2 inch cockroach crawled across his hand. We watched it in horror scurry across the table until my other friend smashed it. Obviously we were all disgusted and outraged. BUT the managers didnt care. In fact, their explanation was that the cockroach came from outside so it wasnt there fault. They even admitted it has happened before. I couldnt believe what I was hearing. They admitted they have cockroaches. They wouldnt even give us one meal free. We started walking around to each table in the restaurant to tell them about what just happened and we said we were leaving and not paying. They then called the cops. We tried to explain that a COCKROACH was on our dinner table and we were not paying for our food, since none of us could finish our meals after seeing that. But they tried to block us from leaving until the police came. Finally, we just gave them $100 (our total bill was about $225) and left without ever having to deal with the police. A cockroach on a dinner table is inexcusable, but to not even care or offer to comp a meal or apologize is just absurd. DO NOT eat at this restaurant, ever. I have already submitted a report to the health inspector.

I heard it was good from the Hotel... IT WAS NOT... It was a BAD experience... Unacceptable Food & Service! We ordered Kung Pao Chicken, Mixed Vegetable, BBQ Spare Rib, Chow Mein and Steamed Rice. The Spare Ribs were dry and they were cooked unevenly. (microwaved) I should have stopped at the spare ribs and left... but we were soooo hungry! Kung Pao Chicken was very dry, Steamed Rice was not fresh and was barley warm. The Chicken was cubed smaller than the peanuts, and the dish was full of peanut and no sauce or spice... and we ordered it spicy!!! It was horrible. I asked the manager to please taste the Chicken, I was desperately asking them to make it right... the manager replied .. No, I had it for lunch! I said well lunch was about 8 hours ago... thats why it is all dry and shriveled up. The vegetables were a head of Broccoli and a few large pieces of carrots that were not sauteed, they were RAW! Fresh is nice, but RAW and bland? This was beyond bad food, it was bad service. Two laddies across from us were looking at our table and observing the poor service, they said they had eaten here often and they could not believe their eyes... When they stood up to leave I stopped them and asked them what they really thought... they shook their heads and said your meal better be comped... (We didt even eat our meal) The server offered free Ice Cream... I wanted them to "Fix" the items we ordered. Please see the other reviews... they are all over the place. At best Meiwah is inconsistent, at worst it is just really, horrible Chinese food! Panda Express is soooo much better.

My mother and I went to Meiwah restaurant on the advice of a local woman. We hadnt seen one another in a month and a half and wanted a relaxing, enjoyable meal where we could talk and catch up. Meiwah turned out to be the A+ choice. We were seated immediately in a little two-seater and given water, drink order taken as soon as we decided. The waitress never showed anything but patience with our ignorance on the menu and always smiled. We started with the fried meat dumplings - delicious. Yes, the wrapping was a bit thick but thats how we like it, with just enough crisp and a delicious sauce. My mother had the blackened shrimp and scallops with asparagus, something Im usually adverse to. Mmm, it was, again, delicious. Ive never tasted asparagus so well prepared and the scallops a bit spicy, soft and sweet. I ordered the orange chicken (because I am lame and boring, yes yes). So. Good. SO GOOD. Moist meat inside of crunchy deep frying, a sweet orange glaze. Not to mention the DRINKS. Mom enjoyed her wine (I didnt taste it) and my cosmo was made to perfection. They follow the carding rule, earning my respect as the only place in DC to card me thus far. Im 23 with a babyface, most people assuming Im under 21, so it was a good thing. All in all, a wonderful experience. I will be going back again, and soon. Attentive staff, prompt service without rushing, scrumptious food, generous portions, amazing drinks. Go!

We were suckered by the reviews in the window as we passed by this restaurant and I guess the hunger got the better of our judgment. We ate at an off-hour, around 4pm to avoid the dinner crowd. Here are a few of our observations: The entire crew of the restaurant was apparently preparing for the dinner crowd and 8-9 people were pealing snow peas on the dining room tables, occassionally snacking on their work. One person was vacuuming the dining room, callously knocking into our chairs as if we didnt exist. One of the wait staff was observed in the restroom and exited without washing her hands! Now to the food: Lets start with the good- the Jasmine tea and the sesame noodles were decent. The egg rolls were simply disgusting and seemed to be a week old. Then, the main dish of Tofu and "special sauce" was so horrendous, from presentation to taste, that in my worst dreams, I wouldnt be able to concoct a worse dish. The staff simply does not care what they serve or who they serve. Do yourself a favor and stay away.

I understand Chinese restaurants arent typically the best but they do have a standard which Ive seen and had at multiple locations. The wait was long and the venue is big so we expected something reasonable. We got placed in a booth which turned out to have what seemed like a fraternity outing right next to us. They came in about 15 minutes after we were seated and they were obnoxious. Understandably there isnt much they can do about that but the food was bad and the service was lousy. Again bad is a relative term because these Chinese food places can get away with a little bit more seeing as theyre typically cheaper. The meat in the soup was undercooked and had a lot of foreign particles in it, the spinach was good and the noodles were typical Chinese noodles. They didnt even offer chopsticks until I asked for the third time and they still didnt remember to bring me one until I flagged down a waiter.

I have been going to Meiwah since college and its still my favorite Chinese restaurant. The owner, Larry La is a great host. He takes the time to visit and greet each table but does not overstay his welcome. Unlike other Chinese restaurants, the food at MeiWah is not greasy. My favorite part is that they dont overload you with vegetables and skimp on the beef, chicken or shrimp elements of the dish. My usual (which the staff knows for better or worst) is the chicken corn soup, followed by the Mongolian Beef. Sometimes I switch it to the crispy beef though this is a bit sweeter. Fun Fact: Larry supports the work of Refugees International and has hosted benefits at the restaurant. He is a refugee as well and I love that he has built a succesful business in America. Two if you count the City Lights of China which he opened prior to leaving and opening Mei Wah
