Im a hard critic when it comes to Mexican food. My roots are in Texas, home of the best Mexican food on the planet. Ill break down the pros and cons. Pros: The atmosphere is great. Great decorations, up beat but not over the top. I would have loved to see the live Mariachi band, but I went on the wrong night. The fresh guacamole cart is a great concept. They actually make the guacamole at your table. You get to choose the amount of jalepanos you want to add, which is great. The margaritas are the best Ive had in Connecticut. I tried the house margarita, peach margarita and the pomegranite margarita. All three were phenominal. My girlfriend ordered a burrito stuffed with shrimp and pineapple, with a mango sauce on the side, it was deliscious. Chile Relleno is one of my favorite "comfort foods". The Chile Relleno was pretty good. For deserts, we had fried ice cream and a fried cheese cake wrapped in a tortilla. Yum and yum, hard to go wrong there. Cons: While the atmosphere is great, the service wasnt. We waited about 15 minutes for a table, then another 10 minutes for drink orders. After the drink orders were in, the server returned about 10 minutes later to ask if we wanted our Margaritas frozen or rocks. After 35 long minutes, we finally had our Margaritas. I mentioned the concept of the guacamole cart in the pros, but I only enjoyed the concept. The guacamole itself was pretty bland. The guacamole is bare bone, no spices/seasoning. Only avacado, onion, cilantro, tomato, salt and jalepano. I was really excited to see Lobster Enchiladas on the menu. It sounded deliscious, but didnt deliver. The lobster was aweful. Im talking wet catfood aweful. Im 100% sure the lobster came out of a can. Theres no way fresh lobster can look and taste that bad. The amount of lobster was also disappointing. Looked like they applied the lobster with a butter knife. And the enchilada sauce didnt help the plate. I was extreemly disappointed with the Lobster Enchiladas. The dish is served with 3 enchiladas and refried beans, for $17. Were in New England, Lobster heaven! Its beyond me why they arent stuffing fresh lobster in these enchiladas. Moving on -- Chips and salsa are served for every table. The salsa was a watery mess, no substance. They also serve a ranch-style sauce with the chips. This sauce was interesting, but nothing to jump out of my chair over. The price tag for 4 people was a bit high, but thats to be expected in Connecticut. I would go back for drinks, but Im staying away from the food here. Theres much better Mexican food in the area. I should have tried the fajitas instead of the Lobster Enchilada disaster.

We have been going there consistently at least once a month for the last 3 years. 2 nights ago will be our last unfortunately. Over the last few months we did see a drop in the crowds but for the most part our food and service remained consistently good. However the last visit was the absolute worst. My wife unfortunately orders fish regardless of the restaurant type and I try to tell her that you really need to order fish at a place that has lots of fish orders to make sure its always fresh. In any case she ordered the salmon and when it was delivered to our table the stench was shocking. I was too hungry and slightly distracted so I did not say anything. Then my wife said it was bad and asked me to try it, which I politely refused but took a closer smell and WOW did it stink. We called the waitress over and informed her and she commented that she also noticed the bad smell and said that she likened it to a baby diaper. I then completely lost my appetite. She returned later with a new dish which she said the manager personally smelled it before the chef cooked it and assured her it was fresh. I wondered how a chef could cook and a waitress deliver something that smelled that bad and yet delivered it anyway. In any case the manager never bothered to stop by and apologize for the problem. The check came and they charged us for the mail and I asked the waitress about that and she said that she checked with the manager and he told her that since they cooked a new one we should be charged. On the way out another manager asked us how our meal was and I said terrible and continued to walk. He followed me to the door and asked what the problem was and I tole him the story and he tried to give me a coupon of some sort. I had no interest as I told him after 3 years I have no intention to come back so not point in a coupon. Bottom line this place has gone way down hill. I now know why the crowds are going down. Terrible Terrible Terrible! Too many bad decisions on their part and each opportunity they had to help correct they compounded by making more bad decisions

This was my first and last time to visit Plaza Azteca. Im from Texas, the home of TexMex. I have been in CT for 16 years so I know the TexMex here isnt going to hold up to Texas but this was so bad I wouldnt even consider going back. The service was slow to non-existant at best. The food was bland with no seasoning at all. The salsa wasnt salsa at all it was marinara with a little spice. It was very interesting to eat marinara on a tortilla chip . The ranch style sauce that is served as well... that wasnt much better than a cheap brand of ranch dressing with some unknown ingredient added to it. I had the chicken chimichanga... its very hard to mess one of these up but boy did they ever. Very bland and came no where to how it was described on the menu. No lettuce or tomato to be had on the plate anywhere... I ordered the refried beans and got rice... Ok I can do rice no problem but when I can get better rice out of a box of rice a roni now thats saying something. My partner had the fajita and said that he didnt think anyone could mess one of these up because its hard to mess up peppers, onion and chicken but Plaza Azteca sure managed to do it. If you want TexMex keep looking because this is not the place. I dont even know if I would say this was Mexican food... more like some sort of unknown processed food that they tried to disguise and call Mexican. I would feed this food to my dog only if I was totally out of their kibble and couldnt make it to the store to get more.

If you enjoy being sick after you eat and feel like crap then this is the place for you to go. My family & I went here the other night and we all got ill from the food. I called the next morning shortly after they opened to speak to the Manager. I waited all day for him to call us back, I finally called him.I know he would remember who we were because he came over to sing Happy Birthday to my husband. He had total lack of concern for us being sick. First he couldnt hardly hear me because for some reason he couldnt take the call in his office it had to be in the kitchen. When I asked why he hadnt called me back because I left my contact number he said he was busy with other patrons. The lack of concern was upsetting to say the least. We wont be returning to this esablishment. The only reason why its receiving 1 star is because I cant leave a review without a star!
