This is a typical "were so busy it doesnt matter if you like it or not" attitude. Pros: Setting is fantastic...eating dinner watching bald eagles soar over the Ct River. The BYOB is always a plus. Cons: Food is sub-par. Hard to screw up a Lobster Roll (Lobster + Roll), but they managed to create the worst lobster roll Ive ever had. The roll was completely soaked through on the bottom to the point where it fell apart while trying to eat it, but they still managed to have desert dry and over cooked lobster on top. The lobster was also shredded so fine that it looked like it went through a food processor. There was one small piece of a claw that was distinquishible as actual lobster meat - the sad part was that I dropped it on the filthy table and decided not to take the chance eating it. This was our second time eating here and both times the food was a 3 out of 10. Dont bother with the mussels -tasteless and didnt seem all that fresh. For a "seafood restaurant" not to have good seafood is unacceptable. The 2nd time eating here was a late afternnoon with threatening skies so it wasnt that busy. We went early and had our pick of tables. On that night it didnt seem that anyone was steering the ship. A half dozen young and immature employees were hanging out at a table trying to "out-cool" each other. One guy dropped the F-bomb so much I almost got up to say something - again totally unacceptable. Where was the manager? If its that slow how about grabbing a rag and some cleaner and start cleaning the place?? Eat here if you want a great view and dont mind mediocre food and so-so service. The only reason its getting two stars instead of one is because of the view.

This place is not what New York Times has it cracked up to be, I think there was a lot of money spent on advertising and a nice review was done in return. We went there and there was no parking and my date and I had to walk down a very steep hill. Then we had ordered and the portions were very small. I had to use the bathroom which surprise is back up the hill and not at the restaurant. I feel bad for someone whos handy cap or elderly. I have had better sea food which took forever to get and my dates rice was so hard and tasted like it was over cooked hours ago it hurt my teeth when I ate it. The place is run by a bunch of kids and the service was less then decent. Our meal was $25.00 a place with nothing else and again the portions were small. We left and went to another restaurant and had better food and spent a lot less.

This is my favorite restaurant in Connecticut. It is on the Ct river, and you sit outside at picknick tables. The tables overlook a small marina. You go into the building to order, and it is BYOB. You can purchase coffee and some other non-alcoholic drinks. Some people bring table cloths, chandeliers, etc. to dress up their table. The service is pretty good. The food is good and reasonably priced. In my opinion, you dont go to the Blue Oar for the food, you go for the atmosphere. Every time I go there I am enchanted by the view and no matter who goes with my wife and me, that person is always seems witty, entertainig and fun to be with; it must be something in the air in Haddam mixing with the Connecticut river. I highly recommend it.

Im giving this wonderful little place four stars for the overall experience, lunch with a view. A view down by the river. The tables are right along the docks of the Connecticut River, and you buy your food at their deli counter. The food is very good, burgers, franks and sandwiches, and wonderful desserts. Nothing better than eating there on a warm summer day down along the water, a great way to unwind and relax. I believe people with boats park there for lunch. Two slight criticisms...they only take cash and the bathrooms are a bit of a walk away. Otherwise a terrific find.

Had a great meal with my family and enjoyed the view once the crowd left. Dont go expecting a quiet spot...music was a bit too loud, all tables were full, and prices were high. Id think about going again because I liked the food so much but I dont like having to fight for a seat or pay that high a dinner plate. The 2 hour time limit per table is posted but people tend to linger in such a pretty spot.

The atmosphere was very pleasant, food was terrible three couples all had lobster rolls and chowder lobster was like mush no taste, chowder was fine. Very pricey. Did talk to the server who could care less wouldnt recommend this location to a friend. I eat out at least 3-4 times a week and give this location a poor rating.

A great place for burgers, and although they do sell seafood, we always go for the burger because it is so close to home. Burgers are always cooked perfectly, and the sunsets there are magnificent. It its cash only, and BYOB, and a great little local place with hardworking staff and wonderful food.

This is a fun place to eat in good weather. Right on the river and BYOB is a good deal. The menu can be a bit pricey, but staff is good and the food usually very good. Things get a bit wobbly when they are super busy, but the setting and festive atmosphere make up for that...

This is our favorite "by the river" place for casual dining. The food is good although youre going to pay handsomely for a can of soda. The dining is all outside and right next to the CT River. Plan on waiting a while on the weekends so its best to go a little early if you can.

Great food and really good desserts. It is byob but the view is awesome with the river and the boats. You sit outside under the trees listening to the breeze sipping your wine and as the evening continues then all of these tiny lights come on. I really like this place.

They need to update their website. We checked it to find out their hours. Website said they were open till 9:30. Drove 50 miles only to find out they were closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

Best local hidden gem, everyone looking for the most incredible lunch or dinner should take the time out and eat here! Biggest burgers, delicious catfish sandwich in Connecticut.

Just left. Food was cold, sent it back. It came back with the fish warmer but rice and vegetables cold. For the amount of money they charge I would suggest you go someplace else.

Dockside seating and peaceful river view are definite highlights. This casual joint is BYOB which is a rare and welcomed perk, though the cash only policy dampens that a bit.

Awesome spot!!! Great view while eating. The food is great! Good selection for everybody not just seafood lovers. The BYOB option makes this spot a great summer destination!

There is no better way to spend a summer afternoon than dining on the Connecticut River at the Blue Oar. The food is fabulous, the view spectacular and the service is great.
