Down home cooking originates from the south. I am giving them 3 stars and 1 more chance to renew my faith in their cooking. My wife ordered a well done 8oz. steak it came out charred completely on the outside and bloody on the inside the edges were all that was done so I ate the core for her. I ordered the southern style catfish and I assure you it was far from any catfish I have ever ate in the south it was absolutely flavorless, tartar sauce did nothing, hot sauce nothing, salt and pepper nada, finally had to resort to drowning in ketchup for some flavor. I wish that was only as bad as it got but for my 2 sides I got steamed broccoli and mashed potatoes with gravy. The broccoli I got 4 heads come on guys broccoli is cheap and should never be skimped on especially when it isnt known how to steam they were extremely limp. The mashed potatoes also came in a very small portion and did not come with the gravy even though the server is the 1 who asked if I wanted it to which I responded absolutely. So why charge so much if you are shorting portions I have never ate anywhere in the springs that has such small portions everywhere has always gave major portions even the more cost effective places to eat. This is the first place that when my food arrived I was not asking myself am I going to be able to eat all this.

Im not sure why this place gets all the 5 stars. My wife & I tried lunch here, & were very disappointed. We are seniors, so it wasnt a surprise to find the place full of older folks. From the moment we walked in the door, the hairs stood up on the back of my neck, I just knew we should leave, but we ventured on. Our waitress was bored & wasnt very attentive, until she wanted to sell us pie. I thought there was a stickiness on all the surfaces. A patron at the next table, was telling friends how the chicken fried steak was the best. So I thought if several people were ordering it, how bad could it be. A big mistake for me as it was tough & the gravy was like wallpaper paste. No I think the wallpaper paste would taste much better. Needless to say we didnt finish half our food, but did the waitress mention it (no), but she tried one more time on the dessert. In conclusion I think prices are higher in Manitou Springs, but for what we ordered it was over-priced, & would recommend going somewhere else.

My husband and I are in town from California to visit his family; I randomly found Mason Jar Restaurant while searching for Places to eat in Old Colorado City. We sat down and immediately see 2 beautiful hanging quilts, and heard some awesome Christian Music in the background. Love that!! :) The whole restaurant is decorated in old Country decor so its very comfy and homey. Our waiter was constantly checking on us, making sure our drinks were filled and that our food was perfect. The waiters/waitresses that werent assigned to our table were also helpful in keeping our 1 year old daughter Harley happy. It was an amazing experience and the food was fantastic! Dont let other reviews fool you- the portion sizes are huge and they are decently priced. If I could, Id travel from California to Colorado every month just to eat here! Thank You Mason Jar Restaurant for your amazing hospitality and food! We will be back every time were in town!

I was in search of a restaurant that served Rainbow Trout. My husband found this place online and we opted to try it out. Quaint and comfortable interior (style and menu reminded me of Cracker Barrel), with a fireplace and lots of antlers. My husband asked our server for recommendations and opted to get the fried chicken, and I got the trout--I will say, I was surprised when the server told me that having it blackened would cost an extra 75 cents "because of the spices"--Ive ordered seafood blackened from a thousand restaurants and never been upcharged, so that seemed unnecessary. I got it grilled instead and it was great. We enjoyed the cornbread and biscuits, our food was all very tasty, and our server was very nice. . All in all it hit the spot for what we were looking for (and is just down the street from the Colorado Creamery where we stopped for dessert!). We enjoyed our experience.

Overheard manager whisper to hostess that the wait for a booth would be forever, after we sat in waiting area for 20 minutes ... But we werent informed of that. We saw a few tables of 2 and a table of 6 being sat that came in after us, without any waiting. If I wouldnt have overheard the manager whispering to the hostess about our wait we would have probably just left then... it I politely asked what the deal was and they said no booths were available so I said a table would be fine and we were finally seated. The restaurant was only half full. We went mid afternoon. We sat for another 10 minutes with no server greeting us for drinks. A new table of 2 was seated next to us a little later and they were asked about drinks immediately. We got up and left. This is the only place in Colorado, after 4 recent trips, that I would not recommend.

Waited 20 minutes to be seated, my wife ordered a ribeye and I ordered chicken fried chicken about 20 minutes later the food arrived . Heres where things got bad I was served chicken fried steak.....I let our waitress know and she said she would get it fixed, keep in mind the potatoes are preped the white gray is preped the sides are preped a chicken breast is deep fried in about 5 to 7 minutes, the wife is a chef I waited 40 minutes to get the corrected meal. My wife was done eating by then keep in mind our waitress had disappeared to avoid having to do anything for us no drink refills, no cornbread. I want to like this place but I will not return and neither will my friends or family, not a smart move when you disappoint your local customers.

I would just like to clarify some of the completely false comments regarding the food at the Mason Jar. First off, u can consider me an expert on the subject, for i have been a cook at the MJ for 20+ years. Due to conflict of interest i offer no opinions, only facts. The "quick meal frozen entrees", as suggested in a review, are basically non-existant. I assure u that 99% of the food on our menu is made from scratch. Our prep cooks come in several hours before we open every day. That includes our chicken strips, which were mentioned specifically. They are hand-cut and hand-breaded and have always been done that same way. In regard to other comments, our chicken fried steak goes nowhere near a "microwave". And our veggies never come from "a can".

I am a bit confused by the low reviews. My sister and I were on vacation and decided to try this place based on some ads in our hotel. We started with some tasty Kahlua hot chocolates. A little on the expensive side but most drinks usually are. Then I had chicken-fried chicken and she had the chicken strips. The complimentary corn bread was warm and yummy, and our food was out promptly. She thought the chicken was some of the best shed had, and I loved the real mashed potatoes. It was a ton of food and all hot and delicious. Our waitress was attentive, though not overly bubbly or smiley I suppose. We got giant chocolate brownies to go, but couldnt wait more than a few hours :)
