The word is marmalade, and its spelt: m a r, m a l, a d e. The word originates in Portuguese. It comes from portuguese marmelada, um, which in turn comes from the word marmelo which is the word for quince. Um, and, thats a fruit. Marmelada was originally and indeed in Portugals day still is, a kind of thick, very sweet paste or, or gel, made from boiled up quinces and sugar, and sometimes flavored with spices. Its served as a sweet meat, or as a, as a dessert, cut into, into cubes and served with cheese, and usually with um, with coffee and sometimes served with, with wine, particularly dessert wines. Why if, if the word comes from the Portuguese word for quince, do we think of marmalade today as a jam thats always made from citrus fruit, um, oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruits... most often from these. this is a Seville Orange, and, most of the worlds marmalade is produced using these. Marmalade is made from the whole of the fruit, including the, the rind, which is, in its raw state is completely inedible. Its very tough, and its very bitter. And the juice is extremely tart. You wouldnt want to peel this, and separate segments and eat them. Its almost impossible to, to eat it, so sour. BUT, when you boil it slowly in sugar, having cut the rind up into, fine shreds, the rind slowly caramelizes and you end up with, a sort of dense, rich, preserve, which is very intense, very refreshing bitter-sweet flavor, that makes marmalade uh a, particular favorite as a breakfast food, as a good way to wake you up at the start of the day. It was, the word itself in English was first recorded in the late, fifteenth century, as a sort of, Englishization of the Portugueses, ah, marmalado. At that time it referred to the, the quince paste, which was a very prestigious luxury product. It had to be very expensive, because, sugar, was an extremely rare and expensive commodity. It was the Portuguese who first developed a large-scale sugar production. In the early years, the fruit preserve would be made in a decorative mold, that would usually have some kind of design on the surface. Yes in the course of the seventeenth century, the word, marmalade, comes to be used, more exclusively to fruit preserves made from oranges and particularly from the bitter oranges, that are used for most marmalade production today. So how did it come to be, this sort of mass market commodity, something that is so widely associated with a traditional British breakfast, and, is the delight of even people as ordinary as, um, Paddington Bear, the book, and TV character, who was obsessed with marmalade; he used to keep marmalade sandwiches in his briefcase wherever he went. Well it has to do with the changing manner of production both of the sugar and also the oranges and also the manner in which they could be transported. Sugar became, more widely available in Britain at least in the course of the eighteenth century, as British colonialists, particularly in the Caribbean, muscled with Portuguese and Brazilian, sugar, memes

Evolution, man. It happens! ;-0 By which I mean the menu. I almost had their original one memorized, but its definitely changed. Ive been coming to this location for so many years Ive lost count. Introduced Dear Hubby to it when he moved out this way 11 years ago. He joined their fandom club. Sitting outside on the patio is a relaxing experience. Indoors with the high ceilings can get to be a bit loud. Its definitely a cozy feel in the spacing of the tables in the main dining room. It presents like a neighborhood restaurant, instead of being part of a chain (which it is). Food is always reliable. I do miss the wide array of soup choices they used to have, back in the day. They still have multiple options, but not as many as they once did. The tables are tight for four people if you have anything more than one dinner plate per person. If you try to accommodate beverages and a bread plate, too - it gets tricky. Their fresh rolls are sinfully good when hot from the oven.

I was there to celebrate my birthday. My daughters order was brought out wrong, twice. :/ My fish tacos were dry and unseasoned. Everyone else loved their food, and once my daughter got the right food, it was great. The manager, Joel noticed i wasnt eating and came to see what was wrong. I explained and be was super sweet and offered to bring me something else. We had a movie to get to and didnt have time so he bought me a drink. My only suggestion is to tell server Matt, to check on customers once they have their food. We couldnt get his attention to fix my daughters order and had to ask someone else to let him know we needed him. Everyone else was really friendly and helpful. off night.

Have been going to Maralade for many years, the quality has deminished greatly while the price keeps going up. I ordered the Gilsons scramble the other day, its suppose to have Avacado, swiss and cheddar cheese, it had no Avacado or cheese. I tried to tell the hostess in charge but she was to busy on her cell phone to assist me, I finally got her attention, told her the problem and she brought me three tiny bits of Avacado, didnt bother asking for the cheese. Bottom line, I wont be going back, complete over priced crap. Did I mention the fruit wasnt ripe.

My mother, aunt, grandmother and cousin got food poisoning at this restaurant, they all had the spinach omelette. The food was fine at first, but by the end of the day they were very sick, throwing up many times, they had eaten nothing since then. To top it all off, this all occurred at my eldest cousins wedding, it was his mother who started to get the nausea. I highly do not recommend this place.

I really want to like this place, but each time Ive been there, the quality of food is was disappointing. After not going back for about a year, I tried their brunch this past weekend. My husband had eggs benedict.. which we regretted. My sons pancake was dry that he was not appease despite pound of syrup, and my turkey has was just mush and tasteless with nothing to bite into.

The staff at Marmalade Westlake Village were fantastic today , Saturday of Mothers Day Weekend!! They accommodated my 84 yr old mom (Alzheimers), with a walker, so graciously and the manager checked on us. Our ice tea was constantly refilled. Great salads. Thank you so much for making our day special!

1st time here. Great food. Loved the French toast. Could use more of a better welcome as you walk in. It was kind of blah. 1st thing out of girls mouth: How many? ... no matter how busy you are, its always a nice gesture to welcome your guests like Hello, Welcome to Marmalade

Food is okay but cant enjoy it because the place is too noisy, too crowded because they have stuck in as many tables as humanly possible and I found it very uncomfortable. If I go again I would try it during non peak hours. Sort of difficult to get the attention of the server.
