Anyone whos ever gone out on Christmas Day for Chinese food, especially in the Westlake Village/Thousand Oaks area, knows not to expect the norm. With most, if not all restaurants closed, and even Chinese eateries taking the day off, it can become very challenging...but what we experienced yesterday, December 25th, along with all the other people who ventured out to Hunan Chinese Restaurant to have a relaxing Christmas Day dinner, well, couldnt be scripted by the most talented Hollywood screen writer! No reservations (not that it mattered) for parties under 8. We were 5. We arrived at 5:30 to find 14 groups ahead of us and were told the wait would be over an hour. Not wanting to break our Christmas Day tradition, we made the grave mistake of sticking it out. This is not a review to criticize having to wait to be seated. That is a most common occurrence that accompanies most any dining experience. It is all the events that took place during that hour and fifteen minutes that are note worthy which I feel compelled to report. A seasoned restaurant goer should have picked up on the signs that these people (the restaurant owner(s) and their front and back room staff) had absolutely no clue how to handle or manage the holiday crowd. BTW...it wasnt as if they were caught off guard. I went to the restaurant three days before to inquire about reservations and was "forewarned" what to expect if I arrived at 5:30. So none of this came as a surprise! People have a tendency to get chummy with one another when confined in a small space, all with the same purpose, that being to get seated and satisfy their increasing hunger pains. Well, those waiting to be seated (my party included) starting talking to those patrons that were already (supposedly) being served. Come to find out (and this is no exaggeration), at 6:35, folks who were seated at 5:30 still were waiting for their food. Over one hour and they hadnt seen one morsel of fried rice. Nothing. It gets worse)...I happen to notice (and questioned why) there were several tables that remained dirty after guests had departed. Then, folks just started giving up. After waiting up to an hour to be seated, and then over an hour to be served, they just up and left. Walked out!!! It was then truly apparent that we were all being witness to the ultimate in restaurant mismanagement. The crème de la crème was, right after we walked out, the chef stormed out of the restaurant and threw his white hat on the pavement. Was I really seeing this. In all my years I have never seen anything to compare to the horror show that took place last night. I will NEVER go back to Hunan Chinese Restaurant, not solely because of the aforementioned experience, but the attitude of the management. With the situation being as plain as day, denying responsibility and lying to our faces, well, it was inexcusable. The owners of this establishment should be ashamed of themselves, but whats worse, it didnt appear they cared, and I believe they still dont.

I know this restaurent for 20 years. they used to be at moorpark rd., then moved to thousand oaks blvd. the reason I feel so comfortabe is the owner is very picky on the freshness of the food they serve and picky on the way how they process the food. They would custom made it for me if I request for less sodim. less oil. I just feel like they are my personal chef. its all sparkingly clean in the entire restaurent, friendly customer service, great delicous food. my favorite soup is 3 flavor soup. my favorite dish is orange chicken. whenever we want to dine out, hunan restaurent is always my #1 choice !!

I have been coming to Hunan for many years and it is one of my favorite chinese restaurants. All their dishes are fresh, the service is very friendly and they make amazing tasting food. The chicken sizzling rice soup is my favorite and is my favorite soup Ive ever had. The chicken and broccoli, orange chicken, fried rice and lo mein are all amazing as well. I highly recommend Hunan.

I carried out a spicy shrimp dish (had NO flavor) and the next night went there with friends and family to give it another try. The service took FOREVER and again the food was without flavor. Even the Won-ton soup was bad. There was barely anything in the Won-tons. My husband didnt even finish his food because it was so bad and he usually eats ANYTHING. Never again.

We were very excited to order Chinese and disappointed quickly they took 2 hours to deliver and when we called to check on the food they said "if we wanted it sooner we could go pick up" this is ridiculous and will never order from this place EVER again!!

Ive been going to this restaurant once per week for a couple of years now. The service is great. They are friendly, and they have many entree options. They are also reasonably priced. One of the better, consistent places Ive ever known.

Best Chinese food in Southern California. Always fresh and incredibly flavorful. They dont bat an eye if you ask for no sugar. Try their authentic Chinese country dishes, ask for the non Americanized Chinese menu- it is outstanding!!

Best Chinese food in the area. We have been ordering since they were in their old location near the Sports Chalet. We have tried some of the others but keep coming back here.

Authentic in style, but not in taste. The hot and sour soup was just sour. Most of the food was severely under-spiced.
