Ive been here about 6 times, and I have to say that this place is mismanaged, and they dont seem to care. I say that because Ive brought things to their attention, and those things never get fixed, and both the food and service are hit or miss. First the food: They cant make crispy bacon to save their lives. It almost always comes out soggy with the consistency of a wet noodle, even when I specifically asked for "crispy bacon." One fo my favorites is the apple smoked sausage, but it has come out cold on two occasions. My overall opinion of the staff is that they are completely doing there own thing, which makes it seem like they know nothing at all, and that is a sign of mismanagement to me. There are obviously some good staff here, and then some not so good staff; Ive sat waiting for 15 minutes for a refill on my coffee, while watching my watier twiddle his thumbs, or on another occasion, my waitress carrying on conversations with other staff while I waited for the remainder of my order that was sitting under the warming lamps. I dont come here anymore, and I dont recommend it. Try Blackbird instead. Youll be glad you did and its not far from here!

My family and I took some family members who were from out of town there for a good time the restaurant with spaces clean diverse and pleasant so we ordered a variety of their chicken and turkey dishes both were severely undercooked after sending the dishes back the cook for some reason was upset and questioned why the dishes were being sent back as if it was a side of beef cooked to order medium rare I informed him that poultry should not be half cooked bloody inside or leaking its fluids after talking with the manager who was A1 Tip-Top as well as the waiter he resolved the issue black comping those particular meals however we still did not have a good feeling overall after that ordeal and didnt want to chance any more dishes even with the kindness of the waiter and the manager efforts so my family and I left and went elsewhere

I invited a friend to dinner because of the awesome turkey dinner I had 3 weeks ago. But tonights turkey dinner was just a big huge TV dinner with a sliced turkey roll. The service was great, our server was sweet and very apologetic, however she stated that the cook told her it was a real roasted turkey and I told her to tell the cook that I said that was bullshit. They were kind enough 2 comp 1 turkey dinner, as usual the green beans were fantastic, the potatoes were not nearly as good and the turkey gravy was definitely from a powdered mix. I used to say that Black Bear Diner was my favorite restaurant, now Im going to have to rethink my options.

The good rating is for the friendly service and the restaurant concept. I loved what they are trying to do. I do not recommend the Chicken Fried Steak, sadly... I am from the south and the gravy was too thick and cold, the steak was thin and too greasy. The sides: corn bread, green beans and bacon were very authentic. I didnt order the BBQ because the restaurant didnt have that mouth watering barbeque smell... I will be back and try another dish.

Cant say enough about this place. I first learned of them through my son, up in Northern California, and have enjoyed my meals at each location that I have visited.. I love the atmosphere, selection, and prices.. Bring your appetite, portions are generous. Food is great, Breakfast , through Lunch, I have not eaten Dinner there , yet.....Take clients there for business meetings, Busy but service is fast, and waits are not unreasonable......pdm

Randomly picked this place and so glad we did. We are Jersey natives coming from Hawaii and were very satisfied with Black Bear! The portions were huge -- you definitely get a big bang for your buck. My husband had the breakfast bowl and I, the Californian version of Eggs Benedict [forgot the name, but so delicious!] Despite it being Mothers Day and a packed house, the service was excellent. We will definitely return before our visit ends.

Everybody has to have a gimmick, its fairly obvious what this place is going for. They make decent food, and the service is just fine. This clearly isnt fine dining, not fast food, its good old comfort food with large portions, but not a large price. They have a simple menu printed on newspapers, everything is very good. Its not a place to bring a hot date youre trying to impress, you bring your good friends and family for a casual meal.

Amazing place to eat, with big portions. The Huge Pancakes they have are delicious, and their papa bear burger 10oz is huge 2/3 lb. If you like spicy try it with no mayo, no thousand island dressing, no cheddar cheese, but replace it with jalapenos and pepperjack cheese and it is amazing with fries or homemade baked parmesan crisps/chips. It is pricy though, but totally worth it. The price is what makes it 4 stars.

I went on a Friday for lunch, there was zero wait time and very quick service. Our server, Irma, was amazing 5+ stars for her! She constantly checked up on us, gave us her recommendation, and had a positive attitude all around. The food was great, large serving sizes too and at a deccent price. Usually I go to the Buena Park one but after this experience I will be returning to the Signal Hill location.

I had a wonderful first visit to Black Bear Diner this past Wednesday the14th. It was my friends birthday so our visit was even more memorable. We were seated properly after a short wait. Our waitress was friendly, our drinks were refilled, the food was hot and fresh, and the prices were fair to moderate. We especially loved the friendly ambiance and rustic atmosphere. We cant wait to go again.

Wow, everything here was great! I will definitely be coming back here again with my family. My chicken fried steak was a little on the chewy side but when I heated it up for leftovers the next day it was perfect. The pepper gravy soaked it up and make it softer I guess. Their tomato bisque soup is amazing and the cornbread went perfectly with it. I cant wait to try their waffles next time.

We had the volcano, grizz, and the big foot chicken fried steak (i think thats the name). The portions were large. The biscuits are huge. I would prefer them sweet with butter than with gravy. The service was not the best. But i have had worst. The food was decent. I didnt have to add sauces or seasoning. I have enough for breakfast in the morning. On a scale of 1- 10 we give it a 6.5

The atmosphere is warm, friendly and inviting. The food is delicious and plentiful. aside from all that, the food servers are friendly, happy and efficient; they really care about their customers. This is what makes eating out a pleasure. I recommended this place to several people and no one was disappointed. PS. The turkey dinner smells and tastes just like you were home.

Very VERY busy restaurant. I would recommend getting here early with the anticipation that you WILL have to wait for a table. Especially during breakfast. Food is awesome. Their chicken fried steak is one of the best Ive had. That being sad its no shocker that their buscuits and gravy are pretty awesome too. I would definitly recommend this place to everyone.... and I do.
