Gaku Yakitori is by far my new favorite restaurant in South Bay! They have an extensive selection of Japanese fare beyond Yakitori from fresh soba to creative izakaya plates. My two favorite dishes are the softshell shrimp skewers and the ontama tororo rice with a raw quail egg on top (tororo is grated nagaimo or japanese yam). Ive drooled over neighboring patrons sashimi orders but we usually stick to the small plates and yakitori when we come here. You cant go wrong with the selection of yakitori (skewers) but our favorite were the butabara (pork belly), Mi (chicken thigh meat), and Kalbi (beef short ribs). We enjoyed the shishito (green chiles) and Eringi (oyster mushrooms) veggie skewers too. I think Gaku really shines with its specialty small dishes. Their caesar salad with poached egg was amazing. We also enjoyed the spicy oxtail hot pot, spicy chicken wings, ika geso fries, soba with tororo, and chicken zousui. There is a long wait so Id definitely recommend a reservation in advance. Plenty of parking is available in the plaza lot outside.

We saw the episode of Bizarre Foods where Andrew Zimmern does the Bay Area. One of the places was this izakaya place in San Jose where he tries raw octopus (TAKOWASA). Izakaya is the Japanese version of bar food and beer. When you get off work and go to happy hour for a beer, you want fried salty finger foods to go with – fries, tots, wings, chicken tenders, you get the idea. Except Izakayas usually serve more exotic meats on a stick, and there are more seafood options. Japan is an island after all. We had chicken hearts, livers, and gizzards, oh my. No worries though, this stuff was cooked – skewered and basted in sauces and grilled to perfection. The liver was probably my favorite, all savory and melts-in-your-mouth. We did have tamer stuff like pork belly, wings, and fried squid. I was so looking forward to beef tongue though, which I haven’t had since my trip to Japan, but they were out. Oh well, the search continues.

They serve oxtail in a boiling hot broth of perfectly seasoned vegetables and silky, heavenly tofu. They serve pork belly *wrapped around* quail eggs. House-smoked bacon. *House-smoked* BACON! The irresistible taste of charcoal permeates deep into every succulent bite. Dont even get me started on the chicken. If you arent on board with their inventive menu, awesome service, and mouthwatering _________, go away. More Gaku for me. Was this review …?

Tends to be busy so make sure to make reservations. Very high quality Japanese skewers place. Not quite an Izakaya, but they do have some small dishes. Ive been here countless times, and food have been consistent. Well seasoned, well cooked, high quality ingredients. Most of the time I get some skewers, along with a few dishes. The spicy Gaku wings, potato cooked in garlic butter, are musts. Duck soba is also very good

Sumiyas sister restaurant. Equally delicious dishes, but with a different spin. We had the steamed clams, chicken zousui, and I few other dishes I forget. We tried to order things that Sumiya did not have and were very pleased our choices. The black sesame dessert was delicious as well. Not too sweet, and very creamy.

Among the skewers I really enjoyed the hatsu, the gyutan negi, the mino, the kalbi with garlic, the seared hotate, and the shiitake. I also really liked the duck prosciutto salad. For dessert the green tea creme brulee.

they refuse to split a $60 check on two credit cards. service people ignored us as we looked at them multiple times. food was pretty good, sake and beer overpriced.

Been here many times. Skewers are great, everything else is good. Gets expensive as its easy to keep ordering and ordering skewers, but I guess thats a good thing!

Best Japanese BBQ in town. The fatty tuna dish and chicken skin BBQ is the best. It sounds weird but really taste good if you are brave enough to try.

Overpriced and under-portioned. Dont go there if you are looking to fill up, you will end up spending $100 or more.
