I love the fierce loyalty the fans and locals have for their burrito/taco shops, but sadly most if not all have never had burritos/tacos and Mexican food all across the country to really know regional differences in marinade, tortilla, rice, beans, condiments, even style of guacamole. I consider my Mexican food palate refined as Ive been to over 200 shops in 8 states on both sides of the border and even though I went here late and after heavy drinking it was overall a sad state of affairs for Northern California Mexican food let alone the San Francisco Mission Style burrito. Taqueria La Cumbria, home of the mission style burrito. What is a mission style burrito you ask? Well I looked it up online and its a large flour tortilla wrapped in foil and filled with rice, beans, meat, and other condiments like guacamole, sour cream and eaten by unwrapping the foil slowly as you go down and pouring salsa with each subsequent bite. If youve never been and are a bit more mainstream this Chipotle. The flour tortilla is a west coast thing. With that being said I didnt enjoy the carne asada, I loved how it was fresh cut to order, but not fresh cooked, it didnt have that sizzle off the grill freshness and the flavor was forgettable. The salsas were ok, but the flavors didnt differentiate and or pop and the fresca was bland. The burrito overall was lacking in that each of the flavors were ok, but the melding and the flavor in each bite left me regretting not getting adobada or using a hotter salsa. The guacamole was the thicker kind with no noticeable lemon and no visible cilantro/onions Like most shops in the area they were open late night, so I did go here after hitting up some nightlife and yes it was packed, a good sign. I should have gone the extra mile, literally and gone to La Taqueria, which apparently I hear make a larger rice less mission style burrito.

My ex told me about this place. He used to frequent it when he was stationed in Oakland in the 90s. He asked me if it still existed, and it does. So when I saw it on a recent outing to the Mission, I knew I had to try it. I ordered a chicken tamale plate. For $13, it was a bit expensive, but it was a pretty big tamale, which came with a salad, beans, and rice. The tamale didnt skimp on the chicken, and it was good. Not "Im so coming back here" good. Though if I were to come back, I would get something less expensive. The people working in the back are friendly and patient. Theres also lots of seating inside. They do need to fix the bathroom door though.. It kept swinging open (when unused) and I was facing it. I dont like seeing a toilet when Im eating.

Plan 100% recomendable!

I had heard about this place because of its features on foodie shows, like No Reservations and Man vs. Food, so when we had some free time in SF, my boyfriend and I just had to go check it out. The atmosphere was similar to that of Chipotle restaurants (wait in line to order from behind a piece of glass where all the ingredients are laid). I got a vegetarian burrito with veggies and guac instead of meat. It was prepared quickly and definitely satisfied my craving for a big ol burrito. My boyfriend LOVED his chicken burrito. We also got margaritas (which were a little too sweet) and chips, in addition to our 2 burritos, for only 15-20 bucks... definitely worth it.

La Cumbre Taqueria is one of the few places still there after all the years of Mission population upheaval and yuppie invasion/neighborhood facelifting. And theyre STILL GREAT! I like to think that this is because they have maintained a high quality of food service and excellent fresh ingredients that keeps people coming back. Thats been true for me for over 15 years now. Their barbecued chicken is still my favorite (compared to ANY other Mexican spot in San Francisco) and Ive never been served a dish with hard, under-ripe avocado on it or in it--something I cannot say about any of the other taquerias Ive been to anywhere!

Love the staff here! There was one in particularly friendly cash register man who had all your needs and about-to-be needs in mind. Paper menu so you dont have to look up at the screen? More chips because it looks like you enjoyed them? Water to go if you dont want soda? Salsa? more salsa? haha. super friendly, lots to choose from and pretty inexpensive. Super nice people, and yummy food. Lots of veggie options to choose from. Also, nice location. Right on Valencia and lots of room for larger groups. Super helpful and nice. Definitely recommended

Usually places you see reviewed on Tv arent always the best, they have one or two good dishes and thats it. Not La Cumbre, I was skeptical to come in, and it is a bit confusing on where the line starts, ( it starts from right to left) But the food is nothing less than Yummy, and pretty customizable at that, a family owned restaurant, the mother goes down the line of food asking what kind of beans do you want, do you want this or that, and so one, to the point where there are so many combinations, fantastic to the point im almost a regular

Among the elite powerhouse burritos of the Mission. The burrito is big and hefty and filled with good solid tasty ingredients. The chicken was pulled off the grill and chopped right before my eyes. As a whole, the burrito is a bit messy to eat as it drips right through the foil, but its definitely finger lickin good. Inside: the place probably has more character than any other taqueria in the Mission. Sort of a mix between the Mexican version of a Hard Rock and a TGI Fridays. Everyone working there is friendly too.

Lo encontramos de casualidad. El local y la atención dejan un poco que desear pero los burritos son fantásticos y enormes, y hay que reconocer que es un sitio auténtico donde los haya. Totalmente recomendable si estas por la zona

Saw this place on Man Vs Food. I figured I would try them while on vacation. The owner of the place with the spandex shirt was there...what a rude emotionless man. No customer service from him at all. I figured the food would be the turning point, making my trip down there worth while...no way. The food was cold and it tasted very bland. I get way better food from my home city of San Fernando. Overpriced, overhyped, underperforming.
