I stumbled upon this gem when my friends and I were trying to go to Tofu House for a weekend lunch but found it closed. I was very happy to find Han Il Kwan though! My first time was with a group of 4 and we came at an odd lunch hour, so it wasnt crowded at all. We ordered the seafood pancake, spicy hot beef soup, kimchee tofu soup, and clay pot bibimbop. Im not sure if its because we were super hungry, but we were really satisfied and happy with most of the food! I ordered the tofu soup, which was subpar, to myself but had buyers remorse when I saw my friends spicy hot beef soup. Everything was a huge portion though so we were plenty full and had lots of leftovers at the end. Second time was recently when I went with a bigger group for dinner, so reservations had to be made. This time I made sure to order the spicy beef soup and shared the bibimbop with a friend. It mightve been the fact that it get super packed for dinner, but the soup wasnt as good as I remembered. Bibimbop, in general, never really stands out to me but I couldnt complain about Han Il Kwans version. The reason my review is mostly neutral but Im giving it 4 stars though is because of its banchan. You could get full off of just that if you wanted because they give you SO MUCH! I love the variety and its because of Han Il Kwan that I can eat kimchee by itself now (always had to have it with something else before). I start drooling just thinking of their banchan. They dont have yogurt soju though, but plain soju is readily available. Also, servers and everyone were very helpful and attentive!

Came here for my second time last Saturday. I remember the first time I came I thought the food was really good, but it was only two of us so we couldnt explore as much as I wanted. This time there were 3, SKYS THE LIMIT! After considering the Dinner A for six people, we thought it wise just to order a few things. We settled on an order of Kalbi, Seafood and Kimchee Pancake, Kimchee and Pork Spicy Soup, and Clay Pot Bi Bim Bop! Everything was delicious. The Kalbi was cooked perfectly and was a good portioned size. The Bi Bim Bop really stood out as everything blended in perfectly, with a perfect over easy egg top. The crunchy rice at the bottom can only be had with the clay pot and adds extra depth to the dish, The pancake and soup were both solid. All portions were a good size. The other thing that stands out about this place over most of the other places in SF is the Banchan assortment. It pretty much has all the essentials, and they threw in an a scrambled egg dish that was really good. I had made a reservation for 8 oclock for 4, be we were late and showed up with 3. I had called to let them know that, and they were really accommodating! We got seated right away! I started this review at 4 stars, but when I think about. I couldnt really knock them down for anything. 5 stars it is! Best KBBQ in SF that Ive had.

With such a wealth of restaurants in San Francisco I tend to seek a new place more often than repeat an experience. Humble Han Il Kwan qualifies as a place I return to and recommend. It is a neighborhood gem that is destination worthy. Its not hard to find, just follow the scent of grilling meat that perfumes the air outside. The decor is like a slightly shabby (but clean) wing of an Emperors estate. The tables in the booths that line the room and look onto Balboa St. are equipped with a bar-b-queing unit if you are looking for a fun DIY interactive dining experience. The server will show you how its done. The menu is very comprehensive and has appeal for both the adventurous and more conservative diner. Lunch specials offer a limited menu at a terrific value. Every order comes with a generous selection of colorful and highly seasoned ban-chan dishes that fill the table, a bubbling, flavorful tofu soup and savory pancakes with dipping sauce. As one would expect there is complimentary tea to wash it all down but if, like me, you enjoying putting something fermented in a tiny cup the BekSeJu with its clean herbal taste pairs just right with the cuisine. Next time you are craving something different, delicious and reasonably priced head to Han Il Kwan.

Great Korean restaurant for your wallet! Weve come here so often that the entire staff and owner knows us and even adopted us into their "family". LOL! They get alot of tour buses so theyre the most busiest on weekends with crowds hoovering inside and outside smoking and yabbering like all tourists do. We come here for their kalbi, kalbi gim, bulgogi and my love, the bimbibap! The portions are always generous and the owner and wife often stops by to make sure youre good, happy etc. From time to time, hell even join in on the fun and drink with you (on the house too!). They have the option where you can do the cooking yourself at your table or they can cook it for you. For us specifically, because we have a young daughter whos at the super curious stage, we always opt for them to do the cooking. The only complaint I have with this place is that their kimchi and spicy sauce is not spicy enough although some might disagree with me....Personal preference.. =p

Best "grill your own meat" Korean BBQ place Ive tried in San Francisco. I knew this place was going to be good as soon as I saw the quantity and variety of side dishes they loaded onto the table as soon as I sat down (these are free and come with the meal). The way these kind of places work is that you order a selection of meats, and they bring them to your table raw. The tables have small grills set into the middle, which the waiters fire up, and you cook the meat in small batches over the course of the meal. The tempo of the meal is largely up to you; the waiters will come around to make sure your meat is cooking correctly, but ultimately its on you to take it off the grill and put more on. The whole process is a lot of fun. You can also order cooked food off the menu if youre not into the whole production. Lots of Korean families eat here, giving it a busy/lively atmosphere.
