I have been in town for 4 days and taking the MTA trolley from my Hotel in Mission Valley to the GasLamp district a few nights looking for something to eat. I had a hankering for Sushi, so i used my iPhone to find all the sushi places in the area. The reviews were mixed, so i decided to go back to the place from the night before and ask the bartender where she would go. "Taka" was the response. So at 6pm on a Saturday night, i strolled down 5th Ave and found this little gem of a Sushi Bar/Restaurant half full (it was early!) I sat down at the Sushi Bar and explained to Makato that i was adventurous, but not crazy. I asked him what he recommended and he said the Sea Urchin was local and the Spanish Mackerel was good. I went with the Mackerel Sushi, Soft Shell Crab roll, and Unagi Nigiri. The Mackerel came in perfect slice pieces on top of a curved whole skeleton of the fish it came from skewered by a stick (with only head, thin meat on the spine and tail). He worked his magic with his other customers (there were 5 chefs behind the counter) and as i was finishing one item, he was ready to place the next item in front of me. The fish was fresh and flavorful. He even asked me if i would like tobiko (flying fish eggs) on my crab roll. He joked and laughed with me, and when i finished the Unagi, he told me i couldnt leave yet and he recommended i get a sake. I asked why and he explained that they were deepfrying the whole Mackerel carcass for me (head and all) to eat. So i ordered a Sapparo and out it came. He said "eat the whole thing" and i replied - "of course". It was delicious and reminded me of eating yummy fired smelt as a child. Needless to say, i LOVED this place and i thanked them all with low bows for a lovely evening. Large and small Sapparo beer, Edamame, a huge Softshell Crab roll, Unagi and the Spanish Mackerel - $48. Perfect.

Have to say that the Sushi here was good but not great. We had two cut rolls that had good flavor but werent well packed, sushi rice was a little wet and didnt hold together. Also a little heavy on vegetables and not enough fish in my opinion. The Sashimi here was hit & miss. We had really excellent Salmon but were less than impressed with the Spanish Makerel. Cold sake was served just above room temperature, not truly chilled. Service was good, lovely non intimidating atmosphere. We may give this place a second chance sometime but its one of those sushi places where you kind of need to know what they are good at and what is fresh. Did get crowded by the time we left, a good indication that folks in the area like it. If you try it out I would definitely sit at the sushi bar so you can see someone order a live shrimp!

Great sushi and great service, worth the $$ Food: Great - Service: Great - Value: OK - Very good sushi in a pleasant atmosphere with good service. We went for a late dinner our first night in San Diego. It was a good thing that we called and made reservations a few hours ahead. A casual, trendy atmosphere - when we went it was crowded with casually to trendy patrons. The service was very attentive, knowledgeable and helpful. The sushi was great. Very fresh flavorful and well prepared. The menu had an extensive selection of sushi and sashimi. But this is a sushi restaurant, the selection of non-sushi items on the menu was limited. A moderately expensive sushi restaurant thats worth the price.

Hands down the best Sushi spot I ever had in my 2+ years at West coast. Moreover, it is more than fantastic food. My journey start with their special effort to move the table my wife and I to see our 8 month son in the stroller. I have been to more than dozens of restaurant with my son in stroller and this is the first place sincerely treat my son as a customer too. The food bring you feeling of happiness which is amazing considering that I am under significant tooth pain due to my new crown. I hardly do review but this one won all my recommendation to all my friends. A must go stop in San Diego in the future at least for my family.

I was refused service at the bar for a drink. The old boss lady is so rude and inconsiderate. All I wanted is a drink at the bar while waiting for my friend to finish dinner there with her conference crew. I was in disbelief. The bar wasnt even that full. The young girl at the front counter was almost certain I could until she ran it by her old boss lady who blatantly just said NO! WTF? Are you kidding me? I am going to keep writing negative reviews to show the world this old boss lady is rude and inconsiderate.

Best chefs Ive been served by ever. My ultimate goal is to visit Tokyo for sushi, I doubt any there could top this. I let the chef prepare their recommenditions and no dis appointments. Im from the midwest, but I know the delights of fried shrimp heads and mackerel skeletons, YUM! The Uni and Toro was the best Ive had. I visited 2 nights and got there at opening time, the bar filled both times within 20 minutes. In my travels I have visited some very high line Japenese restraunts, and Taka exceds them all.

Went here early on a Saturday afternoon for dinner and it was nice and empty. We were of course able to be seated right away and we chose to sit at the bar. The service was friendly and the sushi chef was very entertaining! The food was great and we ended up going for the chefs choice (omakase) and I paired it with some of their sake which was a great decision! It was a 2 hour experience for us all of which was totally worth it! I would definitely come back!

They are awesome! We were sited on the bar and had a chance to look how chiefs are making role and other sushi. The food is awesome! Big chunks of fish/shrimp/octopus are there. Very fresh and testy. Servers are professional and ontime deliver food or remove used plates. Prices are not high, so this restaurant is a good balance of food quality, service and price. We celebrated 30 years my wifes bday and they gave us a gift: ice cream.

Growing up on the east coast at a young age spoiled me with amazing seafood. I knew before I walked in that seeing four busy sushi chefs and fresh looking fish lining the sushi bar that this was a great spot. Always ask the chefs what is fresh. Ask them to make you something special from what you already like. Great service and atmosphere. Thank you for the amazing experience to welcome me back to the West coast sushi mecca.

BEST and FRESHEST SUSHI EVER! Also, I had the teriyaki chicken and the sauce was listed as a special blend, and the spicey tuna appetizer was incredible. Absolutely fabulous, not too sweet, not sticky. Wonderful. Not too pricey for the quality. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting southern california, it Is worth the drive to San Diego!
