Im amazed to see some of these negative comments. If theres any question about the quality of this restaurant, just drive by any time of the day and its packed! The food is excellent with lots of American favorites (teriyaki chicken, beef teriyaki, tempura, etc.) as well as many authentic Japanese dishes (excellent nato, hamachi kama, chirashi bowl, etc.) Not only is the food excellent, but you dont have to wait long to get it either. Ive been to this restaurant at least 100 times and I can honestly say Ive never had to wait longer than 15 minutes for my food, although its ready even faster most of the time. The service here is the real gem for me though, all of the waitresses are extremely friendly and stay on top of everything like clockwork. I dont think Ive seen such a well-oiled team of servers in another restaurant. As for the pricing, it is incredibly reasonable for the quality of food and portion sizes, and I think many people complaining about high prices arent taking the portion sizes into account. You can get a lunch special with several items for under $10 in the day time, and if you want to keep it simple in the evening, a very large serving of teriyaki chicken, rice, and soup is like $8 or $9 - how is that expensive?! Speaking of the teriyaki chicken, it is not cheap thigh meat like you find in other Japanese restaurants for the same price - in fact, I dont think Ive ever tasted its equal. Just try it once and youll almost certainly be back again, and again and again!

Loved this place. I saw it before but was reluctant to try it considering the many disappointing Japanese restaurants Ive been to in San Diego. We ordered the Philidelphia Roll (which I didnt take a picture of because we were too excited when it got to our table that I forgot) and Sunrise Roll. There were more pieces than pictured but then, again, we got excited. My husband had the peach Chu hi and I got the Plum wine. The Chu hi tasted like the ones you would get in the can back in Japan, which we like. My plum wine though was amazing! Its the best Ive had in San Diego so far and it came in a frosted glass which was nice. Be careful though. I only had a few sips and felt it. Although I also just had a baby and havent drank in a while so that could be it too. My husband said the oyakodon was a little dry and was missing the hint of sweetness but he was also drinking a sweet Chu hi so yeah. I got tonkostsu shoyu ramen and thought it was decent compared to other places. Its not comparable to back in Japan but its a quick fix. Its missing a little bit of the richness and heaviness tonkotsu usually has but it has the umami. Overall, I loved atmosphere and all the staff were great. Definitely coming back.

Ive been coming here for 11 years... the food has always been very good, but I decided to try the beef ramen this time. It was terrible. Tasted old and had an off-putting flavor. No problem. I alerted the server. She apologized and said shed be right back... then an old man came over and said it was no their fault. This is how they make it. He could take my same bowl and put a different meat on it. No refund. No exchange. I refused to eat it and he refused to not charge me. And the entire time I waited 20+ minutes while my friend finished his meal. Very bad service. Not coming back. If you dont like what they bring, its your fault. You must pay. Period. "Thats what Carls Jr. would do..." according to the "manager."

The quality of the food is always fresh and good and the service is usually pretty good unless they get really busy. The portions served are always generous. For lunch, they have a great lunch special menu starting at a reasonable $6.95 with entree, soup and salad. The menu selection is quite extensive featuring sushi, bento boxes, fried noodles, udon and soba soups. There are TVs in each room and piped music which can be quite eclectic. The waiters and waitresses are friendly and when you leave bid you with a hearty Japanese thanks. Like many asian restaurants, they try to be efficient at getting people in and out so what may seem to some as being rude, is simply not their intention.

I dont know how some of the other Japapnese restaurants stay in business when they are slower and charge so much money! This restaurant is so busy, I cant beleive it! Yet everything is fresh, quick, to your order, and they are all very nice! Absolutely no waiting tonight, yet they were packed. Medium to low price range, great full meals and Sushi, casual, and just off the 805. Worth the drive from North County!!! We now have a NEW Japanese place to go to instead of other restaurants that shall remain nameless (but are near PB and The Mesa). Enjoy the casual atmosphere, and great food! After al, half the folks in there tonight were Japanese locals and tourists!!!

Moved to downtown san diego from salt lake city about 7 months ago and have been searching for a good sushi restaurant by going to a new sushi restaurant every week. you would think that san diego would have much better sushi than slc but we had yet to find some better than our favorite place back in slc. we decided to go out to national city because we had never been there and found Hanaoka. the sushi was fresh, big, and inexpensive. all the sushi chefs appeared to be japanese nationals and the service was great. above all, the best sign for good japanese food was the elderly japanese national eating at the counter. worth the drive.

We have been coming here for a couple of years now and it is a solid choice for sushi in the area. There are better sushi restaurants in San Diego but, for the price, you cant beat the quality. I can easily name several sushi restaurants that serve better sushi than this place...so why four stars? Because those places arent 5 minutes from my house and dont have large sushi platters for $40. We have never had problems with the food or service and the staff have always been great. We usually order a sushi platter for our family of 5 and everyone is happy.

I give 0 stars worse then hated it ...it made me sick! dirty table...Nasty sesame chicken I did not eat it except 2 bites to taste it, it was over cooked ..burned and soggy on the bottom from soaking in soy sauce! The manager said that was how it was supposed to be and since I ate some of it I had to pay the full price for it. They would not even remake it. I have never paid full price for anything in restaurant that was not fit to eat. I do not usually do bad reviews but the service and the food were so unacceptable I had to! Rude old man. YUCKY

First time to this place and I quite like it. Spicy tuna roll is very tasty, Im a big fan of the fact that in can taste the sesame oil in the tuna. Salmon skin hand role is bigger and better than most places as well. Udon broth is a touch bland, I gotta say Mitsuwa does it better as far as San Diego udon, but a lil soy sauce improved it so maybe just little more salt or msg? Yeah thats right I suggested MSG. Anyway I look forward to trying their ramen the next time I come.
