First visit to Niban, very skeptical of the sushi. Second visit, I enjoyed myself. The third and each subsequent visit thereafter, I was in heaven. Its a feast for your taste buds. Every mouthful is culinary bliss... I like the friendly hostesses at the front, the servers are quick with the drink orders, and prompt with the sushi. Sure at times Ive had to wait when they are really busy. But other than that, service is great. The portion size is perfect, and for those of you that know me, you know I love to eat. Also, you cant beat the price for the value you get. When I crave sushi....Niban is the place to be. :o)

So the place is not the most elegant, a fast-food appearance to it and an outdoor patio, but we sat at the sushi bar and the main chef was a young man whose parents are from Japan. Our food came out rather swiftly because the plates were handed to us directly over the prep area. The sushi was really delicious and fresh. The grilled yellowtail roll was FABulous. The one thing I did not like was the lack of attentiveness by the spanish-speaking employees who were busy having their own conversations in the kitchen. Kinda loud. Dinner for two with drinks came to $23. For good food on the cheap, this is a good choice.

The food is great, the price is excellent, and the service is really good. As a sushi enthusiast, its a great place to eat sushi if youre trying to save a few bucks nowadays. It has a casual setting, but not a hole in the wall type deal. It can get real busy during lunch and dinner so come early. I didnt give the restaurant a full 5 stars because the quality of the tuna is sub-par if eaten as a nigiri or sashimi; however, it still provides excellent raw sushi dishes for the price.

Ordered some take-out and was really looking forward to it. Two of the entries had wilted salads and one entry was missing the rice noodles. I requested a spicy tuna roll, light on the rice and was told no problem. The roll had lots of rice and was missing the avocado. It only had a little bit of tuna and some cucumber. Had Ginger Seafood and the flavor was so-so. Over all, a disappointing meal. I have had sit down meals here and they have been really good. Dont trust the take-out!

By far one of the best Japanese restaurants in San Diego from my experience! Especially for the price you cant beat the fast, hot and fresh quality Niban provides for the customers. With their new expansion they can provide for the larger eating environment indoors too! Unlimited refills on fountain drinks are a major plus to wash down a hot meal to a full and happy stomach! Definitely check out Niban!

I could eat here every day. You can never go wrong with the specials. Their signature rolls are beyond excellent. Just be careful going there at lunch, sometimes there is a line. Also you must order your food before you sit down. Sometimes you have to wait for a table but the waiters are very good about getting you seated. This has to be one of the top sushi places in SD!!!

First off, you order at the front then go sit down so if you want time to relax and choose your food, this is not the place. Second, the place feels old and a bit rundown. Third, the sushi is not fresh. The albacore was especially bad... like it had been sitting in the freezer for days then thawed and put on our plate. We will definitely never come back here.

My spot. This is a Japanese "special of the day"restaurant. Except for American customers they keep their specials on a monthly rotation. Always good quality and high value prices. Eat here regularly, order the specials, but never spend more than eight bucks a meal. This is the kind of place that you go to over and over.

Ordered a miso soup and CA roll to go, to try it out. Miso is POWDER based. Instant soup! I cancelled it. Got home with the CA roll. Tiny, seaweed on the outside, sloppy roll, not fresh. I tossed it. This place is Japanese schlock. Skip it.

Ive been coming here for 20+ years. Inexpensive Japanese food at great prices. Lines can be long at times as you order at the register before being seated, but they do offer outdoor seating as well which is nice.

Phenomenal Japanese food. The best part about the restaurant is the price for the portions you receive as part of your meal. Nothing beats their daily specials, much less their home-made "spicy California rolls."

Service can be hit-or-miss, but the food is great. Also, you pay up front, so it is difficult to tip accurately on your card. Bring cash to tip with.
