The San Francisco Bay Area is loaded with low-priced neighborhood restaurants for the various far eastern cuisines. They vary in details and quality, but one can usually order any of the regular classic dishes and anticipate pretty well the dish that will be served. But Huong Tra is special! It isnt fancy, has no particular signature dishes -- just the regular Vietnamese fare -- and as other reviewers have noted, quality of service can be unreliable. (Theyre always busy.) And every dish Ive tried has been true to what I ordered and what I expected. But every dish at Huong Tra has been the _best_ example of that dish. Everything one orders is just a little bit better example of that dish than one would expect, and sometime a lot better example. Every dish is _exciting_ and more flavorful than one expects. And it isnt just added pepper -- every dish tastes like it should, just a little bit better than it should. One can always get a fine culinary experience at a high-end area restaurants like Chez Panisse or Oliveto -- and these establishments have their place -- but a low price restaurant with reliably exciting food is a treasure. An affordable treasure!

Vietnamese is my favorite food, so Im a pretty cold critic. I moved to the El Cerrito/Richmond area about two years ago and immediately scoped all the Vietnamese places nearby. By divine intervention I moved near Huong Tra. Its usually packed but they will have space for you. The food is on time and it is sooooo good. I suggest "summer" rolls, any vermicelli bowls, pho, or stir fried prawn with jalapenos (#72 I think). Its a little more expensive than most Vietnamese places, but its well worth the extra dollar or two. Pay no mind to the people who fear the restrooms or need romantic lighting. If you are in it for the food, go here.

Very good Vietnamese Restaurant. In addition to the standard beef and chicken noodle soup and rice plates, they do have stir fried noodles and Beef chow fun, but my suggestion is to stick with the noodle soups and rice. Their Vietnamese style rice plates are authentic, but they do use a hint of MSG in their food. Their beef soup are very comforting especially on a cold day and they do give ample meat. The portions are decent size. Their salt and pepper fried shrimp are flavorful; they use very decent medium+ size shrimp. Their price are very reasonable, but usually theyre pretty packed during the lunch hour.

Food was so good, I couldnt help myself and take pictures before we ate it. Pho was very fragrant, slightly lacking in meat. #30 was appetizing. Beef cubes and grilled pork was money. They are a little heavy handed in the fish sauce but it is so umami. Rice served wasnt the best (appeared to be from bottom of the pot). Even with all these criticisms, I still would give them 4 stars. Its a no frill eating joint. Price is on point. If you are craving Vietnamese and youre in El Cerrito, its worth a try.

Been going here for the past 10 years. Best Vietnamese food in Northern California. And theyre finally expanding the original area. Since they are so well known nowadays, they are much busier so service can be a bit spotty at times. My favorites are the papaya salad, #62 cube beef, and that crispy prawns with onion ginger and jalapeño - also comes calamari style too.

A friend introduced me to this wonderful restaurant a few years ago and I just love meeting her for lunches here. The people are very friendly and professional, food is excellent, and the view is so serene and beautiful. It is located in the Marina Bay of Richmond, CA. I call it nautically rustic. As soon as I walk through...

Great food. Definitely a must have if you wanna try some great flavors. Everything Ive tried here as been good. I recommend this to all my friends and family.... and when I do they come back thanking me because they have the same experience. ... Food is a 5 star (Gotta have the ginger prawns every time I order something )

Big portions, low prices. Tasty food, however it is quite greasy/oily, was both times Ive beeb there. Also, paradoxically, the only vegetarian/vegan options they had were mostly noodles with very few vegetables. If youre looking for veggie options order one of the meat dishes and have them hold the meat.

First time here and first noodle joint I tried and by far I really like their rice noodle seafood soup! The cashiers was patient with me with answering my questions within their short time span of closing. Im really enjoyin my dinner so thats a big plus when it comes to my noodles. Ill def come back again

I come all the way from fairfield just to eat here there is no place that compares. Some dishes as another reviewer mentioned are a little greasy but nothing nearly close to grease like you see on burgers or pizza. Every dish is so tasty its impossible to pick a favorite

Order #37, its delicious! Filled me up and just under $8 for a huge portion! My favorite Vietnamese spot in the neighborhood for sure. Theyre always friendly and helpful. Even during dinner rush I only waited 10 minutes for my 2 take-out orders.

The food is seriously tasty but....Im going to avoid going back because the male at the register gave me attitude when I asked for extra chili. He said "your food is already spicy" I had to demand the chili. Thumbs down for service.

Very reasonable rolls. I had the vegetarian spring roll which was good but I admit a little bland. Pho was very good with good quality steak. This aint Little Vietnam in San Francisco but bonus for non-greasy food in Richmond.

Came in ,was seated ,waited five minutes with no attention from the waitstaff then saw the waitstaff sit down and begin to eat their meal without having taken my order .walked out ,would give it zero stars if I could.

I always get pho so I cant speak to anything else on the menu; it is consistently delicious and a good price. The ambience is nothing to write home about and its always cold but thats why you get pho to warm up.

Ive been coming here for over 10 years. Now that theyve expanded the dining are, its much better. Food is always very good, but the soup broth was a little too salty on my last visit. Its usually excellent.

Good service wait wasnt long at all for food, good smoothie drinks. Curry chicken was amazing, beef pho was great, shrimp pho was very tasty, and the pork chop plate was very flavorful. Very friendly staff.

I have been a regular customer for about 3 years. Servers are friendly and always remember me. Food is well priced, comes out fast and fresh. Not a fine dining establishment, but a hometown gem.
