Ive been to Sakura Chaya multiple times. The first few times the service was great and the food was good. However, the last 3 times Ive gone the service wasnt so great and on my mothers birthday lunch the management was disrespectful and I wont be going back. On 11/24/13 we went for teppan yaki and the wait was 45 minutes, which is fine because it was busy. My family and I went to the bar and had some drinks, my brother went up to the front the restaurant and told the hostess who took down our name that we were going to be in the back and to make sure and go get us. The hostess called for other customer names at the bar 3 times while we were waiting so we assumed all would be fine. After an hour we hadnt been called and we inquired about why. The hostess stared wide eyed and stated that the manager crossed our names off the list. Obviously we were upset, and were told they would get us seated in 5 minutes. 20 minutes later we still hadnt been sat. Not only does the manager not take any responsibility for the mishap he blamed us for not hearing him call our names and was incredibly condescending and insincere, stating how busy it was. Ive worked in the dining industry for years(not anymore but I have 6 years experience) and this was simply someone with no customer service ability, which I guess he(the manager) thinks he could get away with because this is a fairly popular restaurant. When we got sat to eat(with people who showed up at least 45 minutes after us) we were pretty upset about the whole situation and when the plates they brought us were not fully cleaned and had rice sticking all over multiple plates we simply got up and left. By all means go if you want, but this place has some horrendous customer service and the managers are so clueless about human interaction. I wont be going back. The only nice thing I can say is at least the bar tender was very nice and courteous, he could teach that manager how to do customer service.

We went there on 6/24/11, they seated us at a table with a birthday party that was overbooked, then they sat 1 to many at the table. This caused discomfort to me and another gentleman that sat next to me. I am 63" and he was 63" or taller, and for me and him to share the same corner space was difficult. Our knees kept hitting each others, our dinner ware touched on multiple occasions. The staff asked us to squeeze in more to accomodate the baby that was sitting in a high chair. In return it made me have to pull my chair out into the walk way behind me, this made guests, waiters, chefs with their cart hit my chair 36 times (yes I counted.) My bill was $76, and when I pay that much for my bill I expect better service than what I would get if I went to Red Robin. Dont worry I tipped 20% I am not cheap person, but I do expect a lot better service, I will not EVER return to this place. Also we got a new chef which he was quite, not very entertaining and put mushrooms in my dinner when I asked not to. I know he was new but you dont put a new chef on the the grill during a Friday night rush. I will just go back to Tokyo Steakhouse like I always have. I go at least twice a month, it is good to know that someone knows how to run a themed resturant around there. Bad, Bad, Bad, Bad and more Bad service. Maybe go there, but dont expect the staff to see you are uncomfortable and do something about it. You will have to do it yourself, the only reason I did not do or say anything, is because I did not want to damper the birthday girls dinner with her friends, I am considerate towards others.

Unfortunately, we will NEVER go back. The server was extremely rude and impersonal. But the most aggravating part of the evening is that they push their spicy sauce on you and do NOT bother to mention that there is an extra charge for the sauce. The chef convinced everyone at our table to try the sauce and when we got the bill, discovered the charge. The manager refused to take the charge off and proceeded to produce the menu showing the small print about extra charges for sauces. This is an EXTREMELY deceptive practice. What I find interesting is that the sauce (as per the chef) is a mayonnaise based sauce with some type of spicy (sriracha or pepper sauce) topped with a squeeze of teriyaki. Now why on earth would that be so special that they have to charge extra money??? That escapes me. You would think that it has some rare, special ingredient like truffles or something. This is in poor taste for a restaurant of this caliber (supposed). I think everyone should rethink Sakura Chaya!!! There are plenty of good Teppan-yaki restaurants in Fresno that DO NOT charge for their sauces!

Pretty disappointing that the service and staff here have such poor attitudes toward customers. We had a reservation for 11, and were immediatly told if every person in the group was not here by 10 passed the hour our spot would be given away. Not sure why that even mattered as when we arrived our group was split up to two different tables anyway defeating the point of a group reservation. When we tried to ask why we couldnt be accomdated at a larger table we were told with attitude that, " You have to be specific when you call." As if that wasnt bad enough, half the group ended up getting their meals before the other making for an awkward group experience. Then when trying to order we were told that the ice cream we normally get with our "dinner" meals, which includes ice cream, is now extra..... Overall a seriously dissappointing experience and easy to see the service here is declining. Its hard to want to ever come back or recommend the place to others. Would give zero stars if it was a possibility

My wife and I have gone to Sakura-Chaya weekly for years. I have been to every teppanyaki restaurant in Fresno and Clovis and I think S-C is the best by far. Let me tell you! The thing about teppanyaki cooking is that each individual cook has his individual experience, style, and flavor. We have a cook that we request every time we go. Hes the best cooks in there, and I have had them all. I wont divulge his name because I dont want him booked up every time I go there after this. Anytime you do teppanyaki youre taking a gamble on how experienced of a cook youre going to get. I have never had a problem with the quality of the food or service in all my years going there. They are usually very busy, so you have to be patient with your server, but they are very nice and do there best to serve a packed house. The place isnt packed every night because it sucks!

I love the food, I live very close and have been going here for years. However, my last experience here wasnt at all pleasant. It was my birthday and we had booked the party room in the back a month and a half in advance.. We even called a couple days before the big day to confirm everything. Then the day of came and somehow someone else had been booked for that back room for that same day and same time.. The manager who said she was in charge there was rude and unhelpful. She didnt apologize or anything she kind of brushed it off and didnt really care to see if she could help us with anything else since they clearly messed up big time. If i decide to go back i can guarantee if shes there i will leave because she makes the atmosphere horrible.
