Bartavelle is right next door to the Acme bakery on San Pablo and Cedar – it’s a small space with a few counter seats inside and enough tables and high chairs outside for maybe 20 people. There’s no WiFi and it’s definitely more of a place for meeting and talking or grabbing a quick coffee/lunch than a spot for working or reading. It’s not exactly ideal set up – the cars in the car park dominate the view – but I think it’s well worth a visit for their food and coffee. The coffee is from Heart Coffee in Portland (hipster alert!) and I found my drip coffee (Ethiopian, $3) to be okay – a little thin. However, my friend had an Americano and it was sooo much better (and the same price) that I’d strongly recommend Americano over their drip coffee (which was served from a flask, they don’t do pour-overs). I had an egg-arugula-Dijon sandwich ($7) and have to say that it was the best sandwich I’ve had in months. The bread was a very fresh crunchy baguette (from Acme), the egg was soft and delicious and the mustard worked really well with it, and it was well seasoned too. The Americano was also one of the best coffees I’ve tried in weeks (don’t get the drip!). I’m also giving Bartavelle 5/5 “green stars” for social and environmental impact. It’s one of the most responsible places I’ve come across in the area (along with the likes of Flour and Co. and Grazzy Burgers). Their eggs are pasture-raised, organic, and local. The coffee drinks are made with Clover organic milk and the bread is from Acme (made with Giusto’s organic flour). Heart coffee say on their website (with a measure of attitude) that they pay well above Fair Trade prices for their green coffee – instead of relying on certification they share videos and stories about the farms they work with. Other ingredients come from local farms such as Bellweather. They make a very good effort to minimize waste. For those that require to-go coffee cups, they provide compostable lids and even compostable straws (made by World Centric).

This place is awesome! Tucked in a corner near the Acme bread shop, it has anything a good coffeeshop should have — friendly staff, delicious coffee drinks and a great selection of toast options. They were out of avocado toast the time we visited (not in season), though we really enjoyed a trout plate! It feels like a gem spot among both locals and visitors. Want to come back there for a glass of wine ;)

The food is really great; nice and simple but expertly crafted with high-quality ingredients. You might not think simply ordering an egg or some toast is great, but it is. Its pretty pricey, but recommended: egg with anchovies, avocado toast, or my favorite the Persian breakfast. Plus side: while youre there you can get great cheap and super fresh bread at Acme right next door.

This place is fantastic! Seriously. Limited seating but very cute place, conveniently adjacent to Acme Bread next door. Not super cheap but worth it for quality. Favorite breakfast items: the 5-grain porridge dish with the savory spices and the avocado toast. Their coffee is great too-cant go wrong! :) One of my all time favorite go-to spots.

Excellent food, specially the breads (ACME is right next door). I got the Persian breakfast. And even though it was too green for me at the first look, it was actually very delicious. Everyone else was getting Avocado toast and that look very yummy as well, so that is what I will get the next time.

Really delicious espresso drinks, porridge & eggs. Really cute tiny space in-between Acme and whatever that wine store is. Baristas are a little rude at times. There are just about 4 tables and some bar-ish seating. Very small space so you cant always expect to find a seat.

Everything from a basic coffee to a nice breakfast or lunch sandwhich, Bartavelle is a tiny little gem in Berkeley great for a quick stop at the bar inside or the tables outside. The staff is friendly (and talented) and the vibe is bright and comforting.

They used Heart coffee from Portland. As good as Ritual, 4 Barrel, or Blue Bottle. And tasty small bites for accompanying. Their fresh baked scones are really tasty and often sell out. The porridge also worth trying.

Kouign-amann is my middle name now.... a puff pastry of bread containing layers of butter and caramelized sugar. So, so delicious with a beautifully poured mocha. Dont go there if you are in a hurry.

$4.75 for a small latte is too much and if you pay with a card your options for tipping are $1,$2 or $3 dollars. I appreciate good food and good service but this place is way too expensive.

Best brunch weve found in Berkeley. The avo toast, platter with feta+herbs+jam, and eggs are super delicious. There is a bathroom! You just have to ask for it as its not in the cafe.

A delightful bit of France in Berkely. We loved the avocado toast and especially the Kouign Amann, much better than the same named dish in Brittany, and ginger oatmeal cookie.

Excellent, a wonderful culinary experience worth remembering for about the same price as a breakfast burrito at the airport. Hopefully soon to be repeated!

Avocado toast was pricey but delicious. People come here to take Instagram pictures of it because it looks cute on the wooden serving board.

I never made it into the wine. The coffee was mediocre. There is, however, an amazing bakery next door.
