I had heard a lot of good things about La Tolteca, but when I showed up I was a little underwhelmed. I want to start with the background that I have no Hispanic in me whatsoever, but I have grown up in Southern California all my life. Ive been to my fair share of Mexican food eateries. The service was good, the atmosphere was nice and clean, prices seemed reasonable, I thought it was gonna be great, until the food came. I got a wet asada burrito and it was okay. Not bad, but the sauce tasted like it came from a can. The meat was nothing special. There wasnt much in terms of flavor. And then I ordered Horchata. I figured maybe it was made there, or at least a good fountain type, but nope. It tasted like water with cinnamon. The chips were thin, and the salsa was just watery pico de gallo. I dont want to give this place too much of a hard time. The service was great and the waiter quickly exchanged my Hor-water with a coke. The food was decent and would probably pass somewhere more than 100 miles from Mexico, but from a city that is 60%+ mexican, I was expecting a little more.

We brought a large group to celebrate a Birthday. Each person ordered and I paid at the end. Their enchilada sauce has become very salty, my guess is it is simmered until it is almost a paste. The guacamole was bland (unusual because it used to be good) But the worst thing was the Chilli Verde Burrito. There were only two small pieces of meat in a mound of chillies- totally backwards from their usual. The taco meat - shredded beef was crisp. Carne asada was chewy. No refills or offers of same. Just threw the food at us and disappeared. If it had only been my family I would have taken it back for a refund. Even worse their website has no contact so I must post here.

First off I have to ask who has margaritas in a slushy machine? We went on Cinco de Mayo and they were all out of their so called "margaritas". That should of been the sign to leave. But with all of the good reviews we heard we stayed and attempted to eat. My burrito didnt come out till 45 minutes after the rest of my parties did. My kids ordered carne asada tacos that were dry and crusty, the taquitos looked like they just came from the freezer. This is definately not Mexican food! I should of just ate at taco bell. What a nightmare, next time your looking for Mexican food just go up the block to Maxs mexican cuisine.

I will never step foot in La Tolteca Restaurant again, the salsa was can tomatoes, the chips tasted like chips from a bag and the food was like taco bell, This was not mexican food. My family and I were very disappointed. We ordered the Chile Verde and it had no meat in the burrito just ortega green chile. And the Carne Asada Burrito had no CARNE ASADA in it. It was all beans that tasted like it came from a can. If you DONT want traditional Mexican food, EAT HERE!!

I have been coming here since I was in elementary school. I love the food. Its a little, what some would call, white washed Mexican food. But white washed or not, the food is pretty damn good, and hits all the right spots. The salsa is really addictive, and a quart of it to go is a must. Everything is resonably priced. Some prices have gone up since they moved locations, and opened a little up on the alcohol selection. Over all, really good place to have meal.

Best Mexican food in all of Southern California, and possibly multiple states. We still havent found a great place like this in Portland. Anyway, we used to go to La Tolteca all the time and we were never disappointed. They have now expanded into a larger building, but that has never jeopardize the quality and taste of their food. I really like that you can order ahead and your order will be ready. Their chips and salsa are amazing and food is fantastic.

They have top restaurant prices but You have to go to the counter and ask for refills. The girl at the counter had a bad attitude and no one ever came to our table to see if we needed anything. I had to keep getting up to get napkins etc. .The salsa taste like tomato sauce. It took over 30 minutes to get our food. And the food was very salty .Never again Will I come back.

Great Mexican food with family and friends. Good price and can order to take home. Call ahead before pickup for faster service. Seat in I think is quicker. I like the bean. Our family has been going this place for more than 10 years and still like the place. The menu is still the same and we never bother to the menu. I need to learn some Spanish to order the meat.

This place has been serving some of the tastiest mexican food for as long as I can remember. The food is ALL good, very original sauces especially the taco sauce, and FRESH tortillas and chips. The newest location is so fine. Parking is great. Always expect a wait to order and to receive your food, but it is well worth it.

Wow. 10years ago they were a small hole in the wall ran by mom n dad. Now the kids have improved it to a full fine dining expierence. Great homemade style mexican food. I always get a bag or two of tortillas and pound of salsa to go 5* good job guys. Good to see improvement in the right areas. Keep up the hard work.

The food was okay, the atmosphere wasnt great, the chairs and tables were all uneven and distracting through dinner, and the food came out tepid in temperature. The servers only serve the order, not much more than glorified bussers. Ill only go back if friends or family want to, not of my own volition.

The chilli relleno burrito had a 1 inch piece of chilli relleno, the tamale was dryer than sahara desert, and the corn tortilla was stiff as a board. They charge an extra dollar for another small bow of salsa that taste like it was store bought. I dont think Ill be eating here anymore.
