My wife and I dined at Folie Douce last night. Gnats pestered us at our table throughout the meal. Needless to say, it was difficult to have a nice, relaxed, romantic meal, while shooing flying insects away from our faces, and our food. That kind of set the mood for the evening... We each had a glass of the house red wine: an easy-to-drink, good merlot. A nice, full glass for $5--good value. We also both had the house green salad as an appetizer. Very good salad, tossed with a light blue cheese dressing, and some finely sliced carrots. I ordered the duck with huckleberry sauce. It was fatty and unevenly cooked. The slices were leaned against a mountain of mashed potatoes. Next to the potatoes were some steamed greens. Nothing special about either of those two things...definitely not worth the $27 they charge for it. My wife had a pizza from their wood-fired oven. It was fresh local tomatoes, some olives, and carmelized onions, and mozarrella, without a sauce. They serve it on a ceramic plate, and give you a large pizza slicer, and have you slice the pizza yourself (which is about 8-10" diameter). Because the pizza is served on a normal-type ceramic plate--not flat--it made for some awkward slicing... The dough was salty, the fresh cherry tomatoes were sliced in half, and kind of rolled off of the slice. The carmelized onions were sweet, cooked with what tasted like cinnamon, and did not balance well with the overly-salty dough, and the over-cooked, salty olives. Not worth the $19 they charge for it. That said, We had been to Folie Douce multiple times prior to this, and enjoyed ourselves. Perhaps we were there on an off night? Im not sure.

So either this place is really good or really bad from the reviews.. i just ate there tonight and my $40 plate and experience was horrible all together... i ordered the mushroom style filet and the filet itself was great but the twice baked potted had a long hair backed into it. On my second bite as the server was at the table still i pulled it out. Gross. She took the plate back, didnt return for about five minutes and returned with the SAME plate, but a different potato. Im not one to throw away food especially a good cut of meat, but when Im paying $40 a plate I would hope a completely fresh plate. As sad as it is to see a cut of meat be thrown out I didnt feel completely satisfied. Also to add insult to injury I ate maybe two bites of the filet, and the server only comped one beer.

So glad I stumbled on this Arcata restaurant!. We went around 8:00 on a Saturday night. Still lots of people. Service was a tad slow (one server?) but the food was divine and worth the wait. We shared 4 oysters with an Asian sauce, fish chowder, house salad, and pizza (smoked mozzarella with Shitake mushrooms) from the wood fired oven. We also shared an order of their house made chocolate- cinnamon ice cream and a serving of house made strawberry - rhubarb sherbet. The presentation was all really classy. Yummy sliced mini-loaves of house made bread and olive oil to nibble on while you wait. Nice interior with local artist artwork, good atmosphere, and comfortable seating. Go for sure you wont be disappointed.

We were very pleased to find such a good, solid dinner in Arcata, two blocks from our B&B. The restaurant is in the middle of a few nice blocks next to the university and theres certainly an atmosphere of a college town in the air - theres a lovely coffee shop with live music next to it. The Artichoke heart cheesecake was a treat, one of the best I had in my life. Entrees were very good as well - my wife had the Vegi special and I had the steak. Both were made with simple, local quality ingredients, served quickly and made us both very happy after a long day of hiking in the redwoods. One star goes down for non optimal service that made the food injustice.

Man oh man this place is the bom bom. Located in the heart of Humboldt county, and California in general as far as Im concerned. Seemingly from the outside you would not expect anything amazing from Folie Douce, however, the Filet Mignon I had here was on a whole different level than anything Ive had in the past. Im no stranger to fine cuisine, my overall experience at this quaint little Arcata restaurant has set a new bar!

Showed up 15 min early to our 830 reservation for our party of 6. Ended up just leaving at 9:05pm. Mostly because there were two other parties of 7 who also had 830 reservations. Too late to go anywhere else. Ended up at Tonys Drive in for my wifes 50th Birthday. We will give them another shot as my wife really wants to go there. Well see if their incompetence continues...

One of our favorite restaurants in Humboldt County. Absolutely wonderful food and good ambiance, with excellent service. Many (most?) of their ingredients are organic, grass fed, free range, and locally sourced. Terrific!

Amazing wood fired pizza with flavorful and interesting toppings. The BBQ oysters are amazing as an appetizer, and the pizza and atmosphere is great for an evening out with family or a date.
