Orange County has exploded with Umami burgers. Once an LA exclusive I trekked there for a long time and in a matter of a year there is a half a dozen in the OC it seems like. This to me is the premier location in size, set up, glory, but your navigation skills better be on point because most sites, apps will take you close, but not right to it and the building doesnt yet have a "Umami Burger" sign. If youve read my other Umami reviews I wont go into the meaning of Umami and what it really is. If youve read my reviews youll know my doubt/skepticism of most things "truffle". My usual burger meal consists of burger, cheese, bun, sauce, maybe lettuce and tomato, fries, ketchup or sauce and a milkshake. The umami version of that is Cali burger. I do like a lot of the options on the hatch and greenbird, but when you want as close to traditional you go with the cali. Fries, I usually get the smush potatoes, double fried fingerlings. The garlic aioli youd think would be strong, but its not, the house ketchup seems runny. I go with BBQ because its strong enough to hold up to the heavy flavors of the meal. Plenty of people love the Umami sauces, but I find them boring. Not very exciting or complimentary except the BBQ, but thats me. My own sauces tend to be runny too, so Im not taking anything away for that. For the milkshake option I go with the salted caramel ice cream sandwich. Most locations use MILK products which is amazing, but I think the OC locations are going to move to more local collabos. I cant imagine shipping iceream sandwiches from LA every day. I wish they had a la cart options because as we know umamis antithesis is Dashi or more than just shitake mushrooms (lobster, king trumpet, oyster, etc would be nice. What about a stinky cheese or melted gruyere/muenster? Ok that might be overwhelming. A nice additional to the OC stable of Umamis and burger joints, but I still suggest going to LA first to get a feeling for what its all about. Same menu and probably the same designers, but not the same vibe to me.

My wife and I first tried Umami Burger when we visited L.A about 3 weeks ago.We had lunch at Umami Urban near Amoeba Music in downtown Hollywood. We thought the burgers were great and I really enjoyed their great craft beer selection.I had a Victory Brewing Golden Monkey Tripel ale.Fast forward to this location last Saturday at 4pm and the burgers were pretty average and the only choice I had in a decent craft beer with some zing was a Racer IPA.When I ordered my Truffle Especiale burger the server asked me how I wanted the beef cooked....well done, medium rare, whatever and thats fine.My burger also came with an egg which sounded good like back in Oz but the egg came out sunny side up and barely cooked so it ran all over the burger when I tried to eat it.No good! The whole vibe was inferior, boring layout, the bar maid had all the charm of a python.I will say that Nick and Kenny did their best to look after our table of 8 but the whole experience was a big let down for me after having such a great time at the L.A one.I read on the Umami blog that their food will be different from location to location but I would challenge anybody to call the bar here A FULL BAR.I think there might have been 6 different beers available and pretty average ones at that. And parking was an absolute nightmare.I was looking for the deluxe experience to share with our family that we had at Hollywood Umami but here it was very average.Umami Burger has to be a deluxe experience at every location for the money they charge otherwise whats the point?Shove it!

I was incredibly disappointed with my meal & overall experience. Upon going into the location I was welcomed with a fun/hip atmosphere and what seemed like a decent bar. I felt like having a dark beer and unfortunately there was only one kind. I can understand not having much of a beer selection, but to only have 1 dark beer (stout) was a bit disheartening. Upon ordering it, I was treated to a $9 glass of watered down, flat beer. Since this was my first time here, I figured I might as go with something unique to this location and went with the Carnitas burger. When it arrived I was surprised to the size of the burger. The menu said that the patty would be 3.5oz but would have a few other things that should have made it a bit bigger. Instead, I am greeted with something that is slightly larger than a slider. I try to take my first bite, but grabbing this mush of a bun made it incredibly difficult and the combination of too much juices and sauces made things even more mushier. It was a struggle to eat it, so I resorted to using my fork and knife to try to eat it without making a fool of myself. I was considering ordering something else but then realised that my beer and burger had already set me back about $22 and the portions of everything else here was too small to justify the cost. My dates meal was not much better and she didnt even finish more than ⅓ of her burger. I dont see what the hype is all about. The only reason I rated this 2 stars is because the decor was nice. The meal was abysmal.

f this place is a prequel to whats opening in a couple weeks Im going to become a casual regular. Average pricing is about 13 dollars for each burger but man-o-man is it worth it. Today we got the Royale and the Manly burgers and the looks were definitely deceiving; these burgers are packing rich flavors and adding any one of their house sauces just finish off each bite perfectly. Try the truffle fries if you think you have room for it. Layers of cheese drenched in truffle oil with perfectly made fries is almost a meal in itself. The location is very open so when you come in for an afternoon lunch you get a lot of natural lighting and soaking with the tables are good enough not to feel claustrophobic. Service is very memorable and friendly. Theyre attentive even when they have to continously bounce in and out of the main dining area to the patio. Im glad this part of Anaheim is slowly developing and I dont have to travel as far too enjoy many of LAs up and coming restaurants.

Umami Burger is popping up everywhere so here are the highlights: -There are a few parking spots on the street, so finding a spot could be tough and you might have to walk a bit. -The inside is modern and starts with low tables to the bar to high tables. -The onion rings were tempura style which made them nice and light. The smushed potatoes were a delight with the garlic aioli. The accompanied sauces had a great flavor. The middle 2 in my picture were on the liquidy side. I prefer dipping sauces to be thick. -My original burger was excellent. Its a well though out burger and the flavors work nicely. I thought it small for the price, so I got extra sides to fill me up. -Service was good. No mess ups and my cup was always full. Umami serves up great flavor with a perfect portion size. I always keep Umami on my food to-do list.
