My husband and I rarely get a day off together and love BBQ. So, after reading about "Thee Pitts Again" in Peace, Love & BBQ and finding out that the joint appear on "Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives," we figured it would be amazing. At first glace, the exterior was pretty neat with the silver - as it was a 5 & Diner in its prior life. Once we walked it, it transpired to a pink and green nightmare dressed up with tons of creep pig decor that reminds you of an old farmer ladys kitchen & mis-matched table cloths. The service was friendly, but very slow as there were only a young girl and a new guy working. My husband order the full rack of ribs, beans and salad, I order the 3 meat combo (hubby wanted to try some of my brisket) with pulled pork, pulled turkey and brisket. Sides were mashed potatoes and salad. An appetizer of fried mushrooms was also ordered. The presentation was nice. The ribs were black (which is ok due to the dry rub) but tasted "old and well over-cooked." Beans were mediocre. My pulled pork had a good taste and I was please with it. The turkey was kind of bland and maybe needed some of the mesquite smoke that was used for the ribs. The brisket was again ok and had the old taste and was also over-cooked like the ribs. The potatoes I suspect were last nights left over baked potatoes that were mashed down and seasoned, top with little gravy. I think this b/c it smelled of a baked potato, we ate about 1pm and baked potatoes are not available until after 5pm. The salads were as too be expected. Cornbread was very dry and crumbled to pieces. The fried mushrooms were great. The batter was excellent. Im glad we ordered them since everything else was disappointing...it kind remedied the experience a little. We walked out spending $55. An amount I would have much rather spent at Lucilles BBQ in Tempe, AZ or bought the meat ourselves and BBQd it like we normally do. No hard feelings, well chalk this up to an experience. The owner has trophies from numerous competitions that he has placed in. I highly doubt he was back at the pit preparing anything today. If he won trophies for competitions, appeared in a book and on DDDs with Guy Fieri, this gives hope to the little people. This place may have been good once, but after the fame, its definitely lacking. Maybe it was the "Dive" segment for "Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives." DISCLAIMER: I write reviews for all place I deem worthy - Great experiences or bad. We are not food critics, but this experience showed us what not to do when we open our BBQ.

It’s a really sad thing when the final meal of an outstanding vacation is a lousy one. We had spent a week in San Francisco, foodie nirvana, dining on Indonesian, Basque and Moroccan cuisines. On the last leg of our journey we reached Phoenix at about 1PM. We were tired, hungry, and hadn’t been able to find the restaurant we were planning on going to, so as a default we ended up at Thee Pitts Again, a BBQ joint on Bell Road at about 57th Ave. When Thee Pitts Again had first opened it had been pretty good, with a few out-of-the-ordinary entrees, like smoked turkey, available. Over the years, I felt it had gone down hill. This visit more than confirmed my opinion. The place was almost empty. We sat on the side usually reserved for groups (tables and chairs as opposed to booths). It felt like a nursing home dining room, trying to be kindergarten cheerful. I became more depressed by the minute. We decided to share a slab of ribs - ordering potato salad and fresh fruit as our sides. Our dishes arrived almost instantly, really not a good sign. Especially since it looked like nursing home food. The ribs were on one plate, with pools of orange fat and a lone piece of decorative kale. They had a slightly off smell, but the taste was even worse. Either they had been reheated on a dirty grill, or they had spent a lot of time absorbing odors in the refrigerator (or both). YUCK. The potato salad had turned grey with age and was inedible. It matched my mood. The corn bread was served with margarine... What more can I say? A few years ago Thee Pitts Again had made it onto the Food Network show Diners, Drive Ins & Dives. The chef/owner had won many prizes at BBQ cook-offs. Too bad there was no competitive spirit in the restaurant. It sure was a loser.

On 12/01/2013 five of my family members chose to eat at thee Pitts Again. At the time of service there was one other table being served. Three of us had the pulled pork and one had a chicken breast order. The pork sandwiches were tasty but somewhat fatty and short of amount of meat. The French fries were tasty. My order was referred to as a Sunday special which was pulled pork, some notice of slaw and beans served together in a stemmed bowl with side of corn bread. The corn bread was good. I did detected some pulled pork within the mixture. The chicken breast was about 1/8th thick and dry with no taste. I can not understand why anyone would go to Thee Pitts Again for a barbeque specialty. The dining room including the rest rooms appeared to be very clean. If you are in the area I recommend stopping by to use their clean rest rooms. Other then using the clean rest rooms, save your money and go to a fast food chain restaurant to receive this quality of pulled pork and chicken breast. Lastly, the server, without complaining about the food, provided us with a 15 percent discount card to be applied to our next visit. The card was left on the table.

My husband and I love BBQ. We usually frequent Daves on 83rd ave. which is excellent BBQ. This place is closer to home so on a date night he took me here. Upon walking in I was a little taken back by the decor. The building used to be a 5 & Diner which is bright and open but this place is dim and gloomy and over decorated with junk. I get the mom & pop feel they were going for but, they missed the mark. Okay for the important part of this review...The food was ehhh not so great. my corn on the cob was mushy like it had been sitting in a pot of water all day. My Pulled Pork was a little hard in places like it was over cooked, same assumption, it was sitting on a heater all day. Lets just say I really enjoyed my roll! When we were leaving I noticed that there was a stamp of approval from Guy on the Food Network and thought, It must have been a while since he has been here because I cant imagine him giving the plate I had 1 star!

Ive been here many times and have enjoyed it each time. If I want something simple like a sandwich and have time to burn then I choose this over better tasting bbq restaurants. The service depends on when you go. Afternoons have been great and evenings so-so. Ive been fine with it but it could be better. The food is delicious! Its always enough to fill me up and they have a lot of variety. My gripes are that the food is inconsistent sometimes. Tough pieces of meat one time, soft and tender other times. I like it mixed, especially when it comes to pulled pork. Its great tasting to me, but I could understand other peoples gripes. This place is special, for the decor alone, but I wouldnt recommend it as the best in town. I do like the environment and when I want to have some bbq for cheaper than the nicer places, I go here.
