We visited Not Your Typical Deli this past Thursday after reading its awesome reviews on Yelp. It’s the kind of place that you try for the concept, but you’ll definitely come back for the food! Chef W and Chef Vanessa Luna have approached a perplexing issue with compassion and brilliance. Through the creation of a local restaurant they are providing an educational work environment for folks who might normally find career opportunities limited. At least 50% of the employees at Not Your Typical Deli have Autism. Find a link to their About page here. nytd interiorBut this is not merely a showcase for the owner’s kindheartedness, it’s a real business with a real future. The service, the atmosphere and the food are all superb! There’s a greeter, Sam, at the door to welcome you with menus and an awesome smile. Orders are taken at the register by Cordell, with friendly efficiency (and we love the bow tie by the way). Drinks are in your hand almost before you ask. And the Country/Industrial (is that a thing?) atmosphere is at the same time soothing and unconventional. The tag line at Not Your Typical Deli is: Creating DELICIOUS sandwiches that blend rare ingredients to nourish the soul. And in time-honored Yoda vernacular we say “creative they are, delicious it is, and nourish the soul they do!” We left a Yelp review of our own but this place deserves more because it is more. Maybe we’re being selfish but Not Your Typical Deli just made us feel good… and that’s truly the kind of place that you want to go back to over and over again. A sincere Thank You Thursday Saturday to Chefs W and Luna for your feel-good concept and your just-plain-good hometown eatery.

Ive never been more pleased to write a review! On the never ending quest to find the perfect sandwich, I tearfully can proclaim that I not only found that at this restaurant, but a hearty serving of love and compassion. Its no secret that this restaurant is staffed by those who are autistic/special needs. As the stepmother of a wonderful autistic man, I was personally touched. But I cant even put into words the feeling my husband and I had while dining here--we felt like family. Sam warmly greeted us at the door and Cordell enthusiastically explained the menu. Cordell seriously had a future in food. He described the ingredients like a judge from Chopped! The food (OH THE FRIGGIN FOOD!!)--I was floored by the flavors. From the best pasta fagioli soup Ive ever had, to the best damn BBQ pork sandwich Ive had (white BBQ sauce was terrific!!), I can honestly say I would twirl a sign in the street to get this place on the map. The chef/manager "W" is so passionate about the quality of ingredients, and it truly shows. He brought us a sample of his homemade meatballs--a firm texture with the right about of spice and substance. They roast all their meats in house as well. I cannot wait to try everything on the menu. We appreciated meeting everyone today and you are all heroes in my eyes for letting these bright and wonderful kids shine here. This restaurant deserves a spotlight and success. Thank you for making us part of the NYT Deli family.

My family and I decided to try a new stop for lunch, we love to support local businesses. Not Your Typical Deli is a must try, they roast their own beef and import the cured meats from Italy, and their staff are the most friendly, talkative people Ive ever been served by. Like old friends, despite just meeting. We decided on trying a trio of hot sandwiches, of which the turkey pesto press was utter perfection. There was also a meatball sub and an Italian press, both of which were delightful. Its hard to mess up an Italian panini, but this one has just the right kinds of seasoning to the cured meats. The meatball sub was massive, so come hungry or pace yourself. Both the meatball and turkey press have a pesto aoli that makes the sandwiches out of the ordinary. There is a selection of deserts, with these massive cookies but unfortunately we were full. Definitely worth a visit, its good food.

First off, when you walk in youll notice the welcoming, but tasteful, "mom and pop" decor. Next, youll be greeted by the front desk. This customer service expert clearly displayed knowledge and passion for his job, so I took his suggestions when ordering. Before I get to the food, I need to note that the chef came out of the kitchen to let me know my to-go order was 2 minutes out. The personal touch is so great in this joint the chef even came out to deliver the food and shake my hand. About 10 minutes in and out for a to-go. Lastly, the food. No sandwich place in the area can come close to the quality and value of Not Your Typical Deli. I would undoubtedly consider it the number one sandwich shop in the East Valley. Thank you for everything.

As we passed many other restaurants to get here, I was wondering why my husband chose this particular deli. Once we got there, it became obvious. The cashier who took our order was so friendly and enthusiastic. I immediately got excited about what we were going to experience. The decor was cute, chic, yet comfortable, so I really felt at home. Then our sandwiches arrived, and they were soooo good. My husband and I shared turkey pesto and Italian press sandwiches. Every bite was delectable, but the whole time we were enviously looking at our daughters delicious-looking meatball sandwich. I was hoping for a taste, but our usually picky eater devoured every crumb. Im sure well be back another time to sample some more delicious food.

I tried this place for the first time today and it was the best experience Ive had at any type of restaurant. The service was phenomenal. I got the Italian cold sandwich and it was the best Italian I ever had! They also sell little pies, I tried the coconut and the triple berry. Both pies were delicious but the triple berry was my favorite! And they have beautiful artwork that you can purchase. This will definitely be my new lunch spot.

Seriously Delicious. Was super impressed with the the service. I truely enjoyed the NYTD, just the right amount of meat, pickles, and mustard. The bread was amazing. Was a good sized sandwich but wasnt overly stuffed with ingredients (I hate it when you cant fit your mouth around the damned sandwich!!) Definietly plan on going back, this place has earned its 5/5 stars for sure!

This place makes some excellent sandwiches. Their meatball sub is one of the best Ive ever had. They also make the best cuban sandwich Ive had outside of South Florida. Their sandwiches cost about ten bucks at the moment, but theyre still worth every penny. The portions are generous (huge meatballs especially), so its definitely worth the price.

BEST rueben I have ever had, and I grew up eating deli food in Los Angeles. I never would have thought I would find a quality deli in Phoenix! They make all of their meat in house (brine it, roast it, etc). Service, food, experience, coziness all beyond 5 stars. Im ridiculously excited to have this place near me! Their cause is also amazing!

Nice atmosphere - clean & cozy. And check this out - vase of FRESH flowers at every table. Friendly staff. Prompt Service. I had The Italian Sub. Tasted very fresh with a nice strong note from the provolone cheese. Theres some type of Italian dressing that compliments nicely the LTO & tasty meats & cheese.
